1. Nice Korra reference, 2. This game was made by the same dev who made the game Absolver, which is a martial arts fighting game where you build out your moveset by stringing different moves together that start and end in different stances. It was good, but not enough people played it and there wasn't enough content so it is dead. Nevertheless I think you'd have a rly fun time looking at some older vids of people playing the game and showing off their move decks.

Anyways, my point being at the end of all this, you've got yourself a subscriber, just because you're unique. I remember really early on in my aikido instruction, like the 2nd day or 2nd week maybe, my teach just suddenly stopped all forms and stared us with a simple randori. It became really apparent that he wasn't going to be teaching us a bunch of forms but that the forms were simply steps to get familiar with principals. Later on, more complex techniques were employed to get you to start making mistakes and responding to mistakes in the technique is another form of training that helps you increase your reliance on principal and decrease your dependence on preplanned technique. I quit around then, because life hand caught up with me but I realized by then that the teachers were training off of the students. That they were so practiced that they needed our chaotic lack of technique to train against and to help them more deeply refine their fundamentals. I remember hearing that the founder of aikido used to assign homework to his students that amounted to them randomly surprising him on the street and at his home with attacks. This was because he needed the surprise attacks to be able to further train his ability. Supposedly they were supposed to try to kill him but I don't think that was likely, even if it was somehow legal. When I speak of principal there were only a few. 1st was, do not get hit. The 2nd was, do not get hit. The main method of avoiding being hit was to keep off of the centerline of attacks and to be mindful of effective range. You also can't do anything without direct contact. So, after practicing avoiding strikes and learning how to engage you then have to lean when to engage vs disengage. For that, we often applied a simple strategy that was encapsulated in a quote by the founder, “When an opponent comes forward, move in and greet him; if he wants to pull back, send him on his way.” A similar quote I have also heard in some taichi circles, "A small motion is better than a large motion and no motion is best of all." Outside of these principals, nearly everything else is just context and embellishment.
@PeterKoperdan
@PeterKoperdan 5 ай бұрын
Nice observations. I'm sure Aikido is a great movement exploration "hobby" and can be effective for a relatively small group of people in the long run. However, you NEVER see it used in real challenging combat and dominate (e.g. a skinny guy against a big bad and experienced criminal brawler). The same goes for many other styles. It seems to me that strikes are the main tools of real hand to hand combat. What Aikido does seems to me like master level moves a great warrior learns after many years of practice and uses as embellishments on top of the main bread and butter strikes. To extract such "embellishments" and build a whole martial art around them certainly seems like an interesting approach 😅

The critique you had for this game was spot on. There's nothing to do once you're done, except play it again, and I got that feeling for a while. There was no other way to approach the systems etc. But very early on I got this urge to perfect levels. Like, initially I was unhappy with beating the first level at about 30 years old. I felt it was making later stages far more difficult, so I decided to try and beat the Squats at 20. Since the game released, I've beaten every level without dying, just because it was so much damn fun to replay over and over and to get better every single run. One of my favourite games of all time, easily. DLC should be added, and personally I hope it's a spin on the mechanics, like playing as Yang without the talismans.

9:41, about this point, Sloclap's previous game Absolver had a lot of different martial arts styles the player could unlock while playing and mix and match moves making it a fun MMA type game (minus the grappling), but renamed to fit with the game's story. Them being Kick Boxing (renamed to Forsaken), Muay Thai (renamed to Khalt), Ba Gua Zhang (renamed to Windfall), Drunken Boxing (renamed to Stagger), and Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do (renamed to Faejin). When I saw Sifu's announcement, I really wanted the game to have a similar type of depth and mechanic, either with the different bosses/entire zone's enemies specialising in a different martial art styles that the player can pick up/unlock while fighting them. Too bad Absolver died due to the lack of content and updates. (more info on what I'm talking about here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNOhmayTt521ZI0.html )

@@SuperKratosgamer The other problem with Absolver was they were super slow at responding, partially because they were spending a lot of time on the content as opposed to balancing. By the time the PvE stuff came out people had dropped the game because of the fast move spamming and stuff.
@Zevox144
@Zevox144 Жыл бұрын
There was also the consistent overcorrection with their balance updates that totally shifted the meta each time, making pvp investment harder than it already was. That being said, I still fucking love the game and I partially hold onto the hope of them coming back to it with enough proceeds from Sifu like they'd said iirc
@a-blivvy-yus
@a-blivvy-yus Жыл бұрын
@@Zevox144 they said early in Sifu development that they "would love to" go back to Absolver if Sifu is successful enough that they can afford to do so, but made no promises and more recent dev comments make it sound unlikely that they will. Which is unfortunate, but also understandable. Absolver was left in a bad state and really deserved better. Part of the problem is, like you said, very swingy balance "fixes" (many of which broke more than they fixed, and a few of which got rolled back because they didn't work as intended). But more important than that was the devs being utterly tone-deaf with a lot of feedback. They got clear "please make this change because of this reason" explanations from players who understood the game better than they did, and they listened, but then somehow missed the point so hard it hurt. This wasn't just a problem late in the game's life, it happened right from the start. Best example is actually how they handled feedback from the game's beta testing. The single most common piece of feedback was "let us remap the style ability inputs" followed immediately by "let us remap the movement keys to be AZERTY-friendly or to use ESDF instead of WASD" with other requests for control remapping as a general thing being a distant third place, but still more prevalent as feedback than any of the balance concerns. The response was, of course, to assure players that control remapping would be available in the game on launch. And on launch, you could remap the controls... *EXCEPT* for several specific inputs which were mapped to keys that prevented you from making AZERTY-friendly layouts or using ESDF, and the style ability inputs that were the single most critical piece of feedback people gave the devs as being neecessary to remap. Similarly, when coming into Downfall, the game balance was in a really good place before it came out. There was recurring feedback about the frame data not being accurate, and asking the devs to change the numbers to actually line up with how the game works - specifically saying the balance was good as it was, but the numbers being displayed were confusing people because there were moves for which they were inaccurate (but those moves were balanced in how they behaved). Their response was instead to change the timing of the attacks to more closely match the numbers, completely ruining game balance, and the subsequent updates were never able to clean that mess up fully. Adding onto this, the way they calculated frame data didn't line up with how they actually handled attacks in the game, so even after "fixing" it, some moves have inaccurate frame data.

Phenomenal video! From the very start of it, the insane amount of editing, the intensity of the beginning, that all serves to grab the viewer and have them wondering - what's coming next? - only to then transition into a hyper-autistic presentation provided by Ranton, which ends up being filled with some incredibly good and well substantiated points. Even those that you struggled to articulate made complete sense to me. Incredible work on this, and considering the amount of praise you've heaped onto this game, I can't say I'm not excited to give it a try in the near future. That's a review, and, I've got to say that if more reviews were done like this, well... We'd be having a far better time. Bravo!

On the bit about martial arts diversity, I'm not sure how or if it'd be possible, but it'd be awesome to see even more different styles not just kung fu. Like it'd be awesome to see like a boxer, grappler, etc. It'd probably take away from the primary focus, and perhaps it's too complicated, but it'd be really really awesome to see.

Great review, especially how you mentioned the primary appeal of rouge likes being the ability to play over and over again, and I agree that the biggest fault thatll either make the game last in the zeitgeist or die in a year is what the devs do to incentivize and create replay potential

I also hope they add more content to this game. Literally the only game I have joined a community for, simply to be with other people that were stunned at how amazing the game is. Squeezed every little bit out that I could, playing daily but now I havent even touched it in weeks or even months. Simply cause I just cant think of anything else to do. Hopefully the arena mode you mentioned will pull me back into the Sifu grindset

Replayability comes through on how much more there is to learn about tech - Stunning and punishing enemies, animation cancels, etc. Though I think a better difficulty system and boss rush would be great.

Commenting on the mention of how "everyone fights the same but of course, indie studio has limitations": Sloclap's last game Absolver had TONS of moves inspired by multiple different martial art forms, more than Wing Chun - namely "drunken master" shit, more northern Kung Fu shit, even some Katate and a style specifically made to emulate Bruce Lee's. There's a MASSIVE amount of potential for them to add fresh new types of fighting in future content.
