Walden is the name of a pond in Massachusetts where writer Henry David Thoreau spent two years living in a cabin and wrote a famous book about it. While "My Walden" is a tribute to this particular book, it could also symbolize in general a place where one would retreat from society and return to the simplicity of nature. The uilleann pipes are the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland. Earlier known in English as "union pipes", their current name is a partial translation of the Irish language terms píobaí uilleann (literally, "pipes of the elbow"), from their method of inflation. There is no historical record of the name or use of the term uilleann pipes before the 20th century. It was an invention of Grattan Flood and the name stuck. The advantage with this instrument is that you can sing while playing it. You can (unlike the Scottish bagpipes) accompany your own singing. What a terrific reaction to my favorite Nightwish song (and that is saying a lot). This is such a catchy Celtic-style tune and has such wonderful lyrics. Troy is playing the Uillean pipes (Irish elbow pipes). His right elbow pumps the bellows which inflates the bag under his left arm. He also plays the low whistle in this song (along with, in other songs, the tin whistle, the bouzouki (Irish Mandolin), electric guitar (with and without an ebow), and anything else he can blow into or pick some strings on.
