My new teachable course on realistic portraits
painting-the-l...
In this video I am trying to decode the painting technique of the great Renaissance Master Raphael.
I am painting one of the two little Cherubs or Putti of Raphael that are so iconic for the Italian renaissance art.

Great study! I've read that tempera grassa can be used with great results on top of oil paint, when the oil layers are almost dry but not completely (they should be sticky). Very sharp and linear higlights can be painted like this, look especially to how Dürer painted very fine highlights in the hair, line by line (almost impossible in just oil). Maybe you should give it a try in your next oil paintings.

@@PaintingtheLight Watch from minute 14:44 on this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g6qdnLKevtTbe58.html it's a restaurator showing how to paint very thin lines in tempera over an oily varnish. This is more or less the principle of how tempera works over an oily surface. And here you have a more elaborate technique of alternating egg tempera with oil glazes www.davidpendery.org/painting/mischeexample.htm I think the easiest way to try this is to use fat tempera over some rather thin (not impasto) oil paint. And it's important that the oil layer is not perfectly dry, just tacky/sticky. And keep it for the highlights and fine details only- like the pure whites you put at the very end or some very fine hair detail. Good luck!

another great study! I agree with you regarding the light in the eyes, the image comes to life and that is why sometimes in the icons I paint the eyes not least, they guide my hand towards the conclusion. Thanks for all the study ideas you offer

Good video but a small nitpick. Sfumato was Leonardo's technique. Raphael combined Leonardo and Michaelangelo's style to create unione.

The nose does not have a line, it is only the difference in intensity of light between the bridge of the nose and the cheek behind. Bon travail!
