Why do we still pretend that a female fencer is on the same level as a male. A woman simply lacks the physical ability to make quick attacks. If it's a comparison of weapons, leave the women out or make the women compete with each other.

I feel that the Rapier and dagger is the superior system, but Antoni is something else entirely. Both of those rapierist are exceptional, but Antoni is an absolute animal. His speed and precision is just something else entirely. And then the man's work rate! He was doing jumping jacks out there to find his shots. He took a cavalry sword and made it look good against a sword minmaxed for the duel.
@neutronalchemist3241

The first rapierist's stance really perplexed me. She constantly had the right foot and the left hand forward, so waiting to parry with the dagger and response with the rapier, that way completely negating the reach advantage of the rapier, since it did strike only when the shorter blades were already in contact. She could have had the same results fighting with two daggers. The second rapierist's stance seemed much more natural and effective.

@prestonsingersoll
@prestonsingersoll 9 күн бұрын
It is actually a very popular and effective stance for rapier and dagger, though it is definitely more effective against other rapiers. Holding the rapier in a refused guard (as she is doing) hides the true measure of your blade from your opponent. If the opponent's sword makes contact with your dagger, you push it off-line and strike with the sword and vice-versa if they make contact with your sword. The Black Tigers in the Pacific Northwest use this style with great results.

This video features very impressive fencing from all involved. Antoni Olbrychski deserves accolades for doing so well with what most would consider a disadvantaged weapon. I can't imagine many fencers would choose sabre over rapier & dagger, but perhaps the popular opinion isn't correct in this regard. It's interesting both fencers mentioned the sabre as more massive, even though it weighs less than the rapier. I guess that's because the blade weighs more closer to the tip. Are the lengths given overall lengths or blade lengths? I assume blade lengths, as 105cm overall would be a rather short rapier. On the other hand, 95cm is quite long for a sabre blade.

Would really love to see longsword vs sword and buckler as they're sidearms of the same period and would've exchanged blows in a variety of historical situations. Pollaxe vs longsword or sword and buckler would also be interesting, as we could see just how much of a chance those sidearms have against a main battlefield weapon of the time. The master fencers we have on the show would definitely teach us a lot as they share their nuanced opinions on these topics!

@@piotrmarczak3733 "Main battlefield weapon" is another way of saying "a primary weapon used in a military context," which the pollaxe absolutely is. Yes, it was used by upper-class, heavily armored infantry, and thus was always heavily outnumbered by cheaper, longer polearms, but I believe the pike basically post-dates the pollaxe, and thus isn't really relevant to the conversation. Also, you forgot to mention bows. 😉

@@irrelevantfish1978 You, you arę right.☺ How could I forget a bow? 😩 Legendary English bowmen, often decisive in battle, Agincourt and many others. Robin Hood. To justify myself I will say that Polish social division was different than in other European countries. The gentry was about 10% of society and they were obliged to take part in a war. They almost always fight mounted. Infantry was usually from foreign mercenaries. That is way their successes were rather omitted from glory stories of Polish history. Polish heavy cavalry charge was devastating for hundreds of years like in battle of Vienna 1683 and mounted knights were half or more of the army. That is why my view is skewed. Thank you for response. 😄
@irrelevantfish1978
@irrelevantfish1978 4 ай бұрын
@@piotrmarczak3733 Bows/crossbows were critical in almost _every_ battle up until the age of pike and shot, even if they weren't as overwhelmingly important as at Agincourt. There was even something of an "age of pike-and-arrow," as early pike blocks were accompanied primarily by archers. However, there were usually some arquebusiers as well, even at the very start, and the transition away from bows/crossbows was gradual, so "pike-and-arrow" isn't a particularly useful term.

Sounds cool but it would be pretty boring to watch. Spear gives way too big advantage and watch far east spear masters to see how you duel with a spear, rapier just doesn't stand a chance. In Europe spears weren't used as dueling due to the "dishonourable" weapon but the truth is, a lot more knights would die in such duels as it's more dangerous weapons versus unarmored opponent in 1v1. Swords are better for armored warrior fighting in formation though so it's obvious why swords where the main focus for the knights.

I actually wonder if Marta, coming from a sport fencing background and presumably having done epee, might have been better off using the rapier alone. She's not as tall as Antoni already, and by holding the dagger out in front of her she had to keep her right shoulder back, limiting her reach even further. Aleksander kept a much more neutral stance, which I think worked a little better. Though, he is also substantially taller than Marta and seemed better able to hold the high line due to his strength. I was also surprised not to see more hand snipes from Marta and Aleksander, though I guess someone as experienced as Antoni would be fairly accustomed to protecting his hands. But really, this was a great illustration of why even fencers with nominally superior weapon sets shouldn't underestimate the sabre; especially when it's wielded by Antoni Olbrychski!

Marta has excellent foot work but she is not getting her left had up high enough to block the sabre. She is blocking for flat thrusts for a rapier. I guess part of the challenge is how difficult is it to adapt a fighting style?

fights were not staged, we were figuring what to do on the fly, and Marta was fighting first so i had some time to watch and adapt.

Fantastic film/editing, an excellent example of 'action coverage'. English subtitles would be appreciated but still great content and {obviously} superb fencing.

Would have been interesting to see a comparison against Spanish style of rapier and dagger. It's so different from the one they used as to completly change the dinamics of the fight.

As for what I understand about destreza, it relies heavily on binding, which is not a good idea against a curved blade (mechanics are thrown over the window there) and it has a greater mass.

@@CDKohmy yep, he does. Speciically with a heavy Ottoman saber - even curver and heavier than a Polish one. The specific chapter is called, if memory serves well, "El turco, cómo se afianza, y cómo se le ha de herir" (the Turk, how he stands, and how he's to be wounded). But I could be mistaken - it was some 30 years ago that I studied Pacheco. Also, the very fact that Fabricio mentions is what would make it interesting.

Wonderful to see a new video from Szermierzy. Going into the first bout the difference in skill between the competitors is very obvious. Now Marta I have seen a bit of now and she is no doubt a wonderful fencer. The issue I see in this fight is hesitation to engage with the blade of the saber. Obviously in most saber combat constant movement is key, and the riposte is all but ensured when you receive a bind, but rapier does not follow those rules, and the dagger is there to catch strikes. The experience needed to learn and adopt the mentality that the HIGHLY defensive Rapier/Dagger combo is, in fact the MORE aggressive weapon in this match up is key to victory. Now, I am no amazing rapier player by any means, but my plan of attack against such a mobile weapon would be to bait out flourishing cuts with long thrusts and (even with only a thrusting rapier) cuts of your own. This can allow you to measure your opponents tempo and striking habits to better defend with the dagger for follow up thrusts with the rapier. Marta was generally very passive in this spar, while Antoni started in the first round or two measuring and creating the blueprints for the later points. Having now finished the second spar, noone will believe that I wrote that before watching the second fight and the recap from the fighters lol. Aleks did exactly what I said one should do and it resulted in a win. Wonderful bouts.

After rewatching the video I think I get why Marta was hesitant to get into blade contact with Antoni. Notice how in the second fight Antoni managed to beat the rapier all the way down to the ground despite hit right on the strong of the rapier (7:42)! Afters seeing this and considering that there definitely is a big strength difference between Antoni and Marta I think she made a good choice to try to avoid biding and clashing with sabre.

@@kamilszadkowski8864 its how weapons are optimised i would say, when you have your rapier thrust deep extended and beat parried by sabre which is optimised for swinging you are pretty much dead

Marta's stance really perplexed me. She constantly had the right foot and the left hand forward, so waiting to parry with the dagger and response with the rapier, that way completely negating the reach advantage of the rapier, since it did strike only when the shorter blades were already in contact. She could have had the same results fighting with two daggers.

The second saber fight, he tested the waters too much. By testing the other dude, the rapier dude caught onto the rhythm and countered.

My fightstyle would be like the secondone with the Rapier. More pointing on the Body or Face with Rapier and for sure cover with secondery Weapon. Maybe some fake attacks with secondary weapons. But both was nice fights. All respect to the Saber fighter. Its have to be really difficult to defend before 2 so fast weapons like Rapier and Dagger is.. Nice Video! I am looking forward for the next one.:))
