The rapier is perhaps the ultimate sword for duels, and is very difficult to fight against with other swords. But there is one sword that can destroy it!

It's a great time. Stylish animation, good music, a cohesive plot that benefits from seeing the other movies in the series but can still be seen without relying on the others for context, and all of the characters are properly characterised despite there being a fairly large cast for a roughly hour and a half movie. Doesn't hurt that the movie has some mature themes to think about and it doesn't baby the audience at all, it's a film basically anyone could enjoy that happens to be suitable for most children, rather than a film obviously made to talk down to its audience that would be grating for an adult.

Nah, surely you would be much quicker with the rapier than the swordsman. You would be like a really fast long reaching boxer just jab jab jab that point into face, eyes, arms and just about everywhere constantly owning the initiative.
@SurmaSampo
@SurmaSampo 11 ай бұрын
@@andersbjrnsen7203 You have to pass through their reach before you get to yours so crossing a danger zone where they can strike you and you cannot. Also, you can't effectively block or possibly parry the great sword as has the momentum to push your sword aside due to superior leverage and mass. These two factors mean you are relying on the speed of moving your entire body to evade the speed of the great sword. From 15 years as a SCAdian I can empirically tell you the sword is faster. Both swords existed in the same places at the same time and there is no manual on defeating the greatsword with a rapier. Why? Well a thrust from a rapier will likely kill you sometime later, whereas a cut from a greatsword will likely leave you dead or dismembered right away. The rapier's real advantage here is that it is harder for your opponent to chase you down as you are running away carrying a lighter sword still sheathed for convenience.

A shorter sword can be drawn faster, which would often be more important. Katanas were very well designed in this regard, and people would practice drawing and striking with them in a single motion. In a battlefield scenario, something even longer, like a greatsword, a spear, a polearm, or something with superior armor penetrating capabilities, will be more useful.

Apples and oranges. The zweihander is a big, heavy battlefield sword. The rapier was a sword people would carry as part of their daily dress when not expecting a fight. Obviously there's some overlap and rapiers were seen on military campaigns, but the intended role of each sword is very different. The rapier, though so long it would be replaced by smaller swords, could be treated like a sidearm and carried about town. You can't say that of the zweihander, it's much more of an inconvenience to carry it. So a light rapier a well-dressed gentleman carries to market for self-defense can be outclassed by a warrior's heavy-duty weapon from the battlefield. But of course. You might as well say the rapier can be outmatched by a spear, halberd, or bow. The rapier is designed to be light and relatively easy to carry. The zweihander is a demanding, high-performance weapon. It's also two-handed sword vs. a one-handed sword. It can be longer and heavier, with corresponding advantages and disadvantages. The zweihander definitely outclasses the rapier in many situations, but there are good reasons the rapier was more popular and people chose to carry it instead. It was very useful. Performance in a swordfight isn't the only consideration when choosing a sword.

A long rapier with a 45in blade (or more) is quite difficult to comfortably wear. That's basically the upper limit for a sidearm worn at the waist. Girard Thibault criticized the extreme blade length recommended by other rapier masters. It's not at all clear the very long rapiers have the advantage over ones of more moderate length. Robert Childs recommends a rather short rapier.

How about two short swords? You can bind the blade with one and get in range for the other... I've done it in sparring against a big two handed sword.

Yes, paired weapons - especially sword and shield of course, can defeat single rapier quite reliably. But single sword vs single sword? Rapier normally dominates. And remember that the rapier can be paired with a dagger, buckler, shield, cloak, or even another rapier!

Thanks Matt, I finally know why judges in Poland wear chains with the emblem of the Polish eagle(atleast I think, I know why now). I was always curious where it came from.

it's not just about range. The rapier is specifically designed to KILL your opponent, not wound them. The stabbing wounds at the time were mostly lethal.
