Yo man you need to look up the parallels between Led Zeppelin and Tool it all has to do with their drummers. The only two Rock bands that have done the same thing. As it was explained to me. The drummer drums in a certain time so that he syncs up with the guitars and base every 12 measures or bars or whatever you call it. I do not know how music is structured by measures and all that but It is like Danny the drummer is doing a type of breathing in the percussion that is at a pace that is off for three counts and then falls into the groove with the guitar and bass on the fourth. Continuously changing throughout each song. That is the best way I can explain to the extent that I even grasp it. Glad you love Tool man they are the BEST.

The way tool goes to studio is even more complex than what you imagine, all of them are really obsesive compulsive with their own instrument, so they do it alone, every member records his instrument in their own studio, then they put togheter all the tracks, when all the instruments are 100% ready they send the track to Maynard and he creates the lyrics based on what the music makes him feel, like a puzzle.

Well, they jam with Adam Danny and Justin for hours and record it, then pour over that material to compose songs, then actually record it proper, then argue if its good or not, then rerecord and recompose it a dozen times... then they get around to recording the final instrumentation.

They seem like a Swiss Army Knife. (Tool) The knife has cork screws, fingernail clippers, scissors, blades etc. Tool has excellent lyrics, rhythms, art, voices, drums, bass, guitar, timing. They are like a new genre or thing. Instead of a movie soundtrack, it's like seeing a movie in your head, like a book or story, without the need of a book or movie. They can make you feel like you are watching a movie...

Danny said in an artist spotlight interview that african drums influenced him. So there's a lot of 6/4 measures in their songs. Instead of counting to 4 count to 6 and they also accent the "and" of the eighth note of the beat at times. Its gonna take some diving into music theory and time signatures if u wanna fully grasp what theyre doing.

They're commenting on the content of the news, film, television...all the popular stories of the time involved death and dying. Movies like No Country for Old Men or shows like Sons of Anarchy. Popular because all viewers love the violence...but only vicariously and from a distance. Even the news is full of tragedy and heartbreak. We watch the news for those stories, and those are reported because they get ratings. When he says "Why can't we just admit it", he's saying don't deny you watch these for the violence, don't lie to yourself and don't judge him because he's willing to admit the truth.
@themillera9
@themillera9 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, this has always been my reading of these lyrics as well. The chorus always throws people off, but the key is to realize that he says "I NEED to watch..." He's not saying he wants to, or that he enjoys it; he's saying that the universe is a violent, unforgiving place and we are all a part of it. Maybe the world would be a better place if we stopped claiming to be wonderful and just admitted what we all truly are.

And to note on the most underrated song,I can't comment on which I believe it is. However one of the most underrated lyrics from them, in my opinion, is from the song hooker with a penis. It's a simple lyric at face value but had such a deep meaning, again to me, and that lyric is "all you know about me is what I sold you" which this is how you can view everyone you've ever met. All they know about you is what you've told them and they had to buy it... Lies, truths, you sold it they bought it, but never really hear people bring up this lyric and I think it's so deep

How they do music now is that the bassist and guitarist work on riffs. They then bring in Danny Carey and they compose the music completely. They send the music to Maynard and he writes lyrics based on the feel of the song. He sends his lyrics, they perfect the music, Maynard records his vocals.

Appreciate how deep you've gone into both the instrumental side and lyrical side of Tool. And you've gone through enough songs now that you're ready for the deep end of the pool. Third Eye off of the Aenima album is unlike anything you have or will ever hear. Its less a "song" and more a poetic soundscape that, like most of Tool brings you on a journey. Other suggestion, the ultimate trilogy: Disposition - Reflection - Triad off of Lateralus album. Its three tracks but really one 20+ minute song that is one of the finest, most expansive pieces of music you'll hear.

Alot of the "10,000 Days" album was immediately listenable, more so than alot of their albums. It can be a good starting point for alot of people for that reason. Your insight on this was really excellent, thanks for taking that much of a look at it. You're right on the idea with social media and how it applies to what this song is about. We should all disconnect from that kind of stuff from time to time just to mentally refresh. If you listen too much to that stuff, they'd have you thinking the world is doomed and everything is horrible. But there's still good things out there. Alot of people are still decent to one another. Herman 6/8 and 7/8 are used often. 11 13 and 5 as well. Most often its mixed. One can play in four another six and another seven. These resolve at 56 for example. Each measure different in length but summing at a point. Common in fusion forms sometimes. Its the use of polyrythms that sets them apart besides the psychological churning of despair. An apocalyptic type of music like certain gnostic writers. The band name came from a mysterious book that may have never existed on lachrymology. In otherwords invented possibly to fuel the art. Maybe not however. The art of lachrymology is the tool of the soul. Meaning that crying is the mechanism of discovery. Something like that at least.

7:45 its called stacking time signatures, they take a beat in 4/4 then throw another measure in a different time signature on top on the last beat. in the beat at 8:26 you would count like this: 1-2-3-4 1-2 1-2-3-4 1-2 repeat the added 1-2 at the end is the stacked beat/pulse, giving the rhythm a new feel. this is just one example too, they tend to use multiple different stacked time signatures in one song. like a lot. thats why their music can be so refreshing even after hearing it many of times. if you're interested in stacked/odd time signatures & polyrhythms check out Crumbling Castle (Live @ KEXP) by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. 7 man band, 2 drummers, made 5 albums in a year, crazy range going from metal to jazz & everything inbetween. deff another powerhouse band you should check out of you wanna hear more music in unique time signatures. also keep up the good work, i enjoy your content

You give the lyrics such a slick rhythm when you read them. Did you notice that, when he speaks the most cruelly and dismissively, Maynard takes on a low, distant voice? "Credulous at best, your desire to believe in, Angels in the hearts of men..." That's the voice of the popular American view, shitting all over anything that feels good or offers any hope, in order to excuse the worst in ourselves. This whole song really shines a light on how much we consume horrible news (including fictional stories) and build our worldview with just that, thus perpetuating it. It dares us to take responsibility and do better.

Many of tools songs are inspired by spiritual awakening and psychedelics. Their lyrics involve self reflection and looking within at the ego and mind. They have a song called Reflection that's worth checking out. **_Edit: I would also recommend that you have the lyrics pulled up so you can interpret the song on a deeper level if you're into that._**

Tool as a name, from what I've heard, is something you use to progress yourself mentally, spiritually or whatever you need as an individual. To become aware enough to do so.

Hey Rah, I love watching you listen to Tool man. 7:50 you asked what's going on with the rhythm. This song mostly has 5 beats. Most non-Tool music has 4, and you can just count to 4 and start over. With this song, you'd have to count to 5. And just to mess you up, sometimes they throw in 6 or 4 instead. The way I groove to Tool is to just keep my own beat steady and feel the song leaving and coming back to it.

What I've come to understand the meaning of the Tool name to be is they don't see themselves as special or more important individually than anything else. They instead see themselves as "tools" that the higher power uses to reach people and deliver messages. That's where the get the name Tool because that's what they are, just a tool used to inform and enlighten those willing to listen.

I think 'Part of Me' is underrated. Alex Grey of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors created the album cover art for 10,000 Days. Lateralus and the albums since then have all featured his work. Now perhaps Adam Jones the guitarist contributed to that artwork. I'm not %100 sure. Both Adam and Alex are responsible for the TOOL's visual aesthetic. Happy Birthday bro! This is like my fav tool reaction so far. The yt channel Cosmic Dawn recently posted some vids of TOOL behind the scenes. I don't think theres studio footage, but i''ll link em here anyways cuz they pretty cool. First is a 1 hour long documentary of the band from 2008. Second is a 15 min behind the scenes with Danny Carey made for Dutch TV. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMmAabWgnbWVg4k.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLx1aaqLu9rcpo0.html The band members don't stay relevant in the media outside of their music so this extra stuff is fun to see when you do find it. To me they named it TOOL because the music allows you to complete a task easier, like how a shovel digs a hole. That or they thought it'd be funny to convince ppl to wear shirts with the word tool on it. Exactly 2 weeks before this album come out: "243 people are injured in pro-democracy protest in Nepal after Nepali security forces open fire on protesters against King Gyanendra." 25 days after release: "Earthquake strikes Java, Indonesia at 5:53:58 AM local time (22:53:58 UTC May 26) devastating Bantul and the city of Yogyakarta, killing over 6,600 people" the universe is hostile and impersonal. These headlines do not need to spark fear and hatred. It can be your cue do to something great for yourself or someone else. I think watching the world suffer and feeling that suffering vicariously is not as selfish as it sounds and involves compassion, though there is no right and wrong. To me it helps us understand one another. Thats why we like watching guys like you getting threaded like a needle into the TOOL rabbit hole.

Loving the Tool reacts, love to see their work spread to others and definitely love to see more people opening their minds! Keep ‘em coming, brother! I’d also like to suggest a band I didn’t notice much in the comments, but Slipknot is another good one. They’re a lot harder than Tool, but they also have substance and meaning in their songs and Corey, lead vocals, is another man of thought and open mind. Their newest album “We Are Not Your Kind” is my favorite to date. It came out around the same time as Tool’s “Fear Innoculum” so I had them both blasting every day. “Solway Firth” is definitely one to react to! Also, shout out to the Houston Legends playlist from the 🤘🏻

Danny Carey is in the conversation of greatest drummer of all time. He is almost playing 4 different time signatures, one with each limb, to create an infinite number of poly rhythms. That’s why you can never just nail the beat. That beat is so complex I can’t even really wrap my head around it but I know it’s there I just can’t reach it. They are amazing and it’s fun watching you react. If concerts do come back seeing them Should be on your bucket list it’s an amazing show. Go check out Pantera next. The complete opposite of Tool. They put the beat and cool in Metal. I think you’ll love it. Start with simple stuff like I’m Broken, 5 Minutes Alone, Walk or Domination (live version is sick).

Rah, your Tool reactions are pure gold, and you do give them the recognition that they deserve. Wonderful reaction, man. The writing process for them is very simple, and yet has the factor that makes their music so powerful. Danny, Adam, and Justin go in and make the music, and then Maynard comes in and writes the lyrics. Their one creedo is this: What you put into the song is YOUR'S, and no one else will try to influence you in that sense. The song, in my interpretation, is about how we all hunger for destruction or tragedy. We look at it on the TV and say, "Man, I'm glad that didn't happen to me." Tool's name has 2 meanings: 1) They want to present their music as a tool to help us think outside the box, and grow to be stronger, better people, 2) The sexual term. They have a logo circulating around that shows a mechanic wrench made to look like a "member". Lol Just them having some light-hearted humor. Most underrated song? Probably...The Gaping Lotus Experience (the extra/hidden track on the Opiate album. Again, just them having fun.) Keep spiraling out, Rah. You're truly outdoing yourself. Your analyses are wonderful and, always remember when it comes to Tool, their songs are ambiguous (more than one meaning). We will be more than happy to give our interpretations, and welcome your's with open arms. Peace, love, and respect, my man. ✌ 💘 🙏 P.s.- I can't wait for your second reaction of the day. 😁

I agree, this is lyricly such a powerful song. To me, it's always meant that humans have a natural tendency to enjoy drama, especially in this modern world where we're so bored and spoiled. kind of like when you drive by a car accident on the highway, you just can't help to rubberneck and try to see what happened. If left unchecked, these tendencies can become addictions; just look what social media has done to all the people that subscribe to it. They have to click on their damn phones every 10 minutes just to see if there's something new to give them that dopamine rush, living vicariously through a phone screen.

I like to think of Tool as a thinking mans group. It makes ya' use your noodle. Easy enough to just flow with the music.. the vocals will always make you ponder. And as for the music...I believe that drums, bass and guitar all work on their jams then slowly feed them to each other layer by layer and then Maynard will throw the vocals on after the group gets the song together.☆

As far as the beat goes, I learned this on guitar,. I've been playing guitar 27 years, I can play a lot of Tool, they are my favorite band, and this song, that part where you commented on not being able to ever catch their beat, that part was so difficult to learn the proper rhythm, I had to listen to that and well this whole song over and over and over again. I'm not lying to you when I say it was probably well over 50 times before I got it. It is such a hard rhythm. Fantastic song. I seen them for my first time when this album came out, once at Coachella, shortly after at the Staples Center directly above the side of the stage, best seats ever. They are almost better live, Maynards voice certainly is. They are polished, I'm telling you. Best two concerts I've ever been to. You have to go. You will be a life long Tool fan if you do

You know how a tool is something you use to accomplish something, to build something, right so the band name TOOL for them being their vessel to create, to accomplish. Using tools like guitars, drums, microphone, all the equipment going into it all, all tools right. So boom already that's a double. Using tools to develop a bigger tool. Adding to that, your body is a tool that your soul uses to experience physical life. We all have to use tools whether it's to eat with, create fire, build houses, make roads, bridges, buildings, countries, write books, create music, films, tv, internet, everything from A to Z in life. TOOL. Something we all have in common, something we all can relate to in some way. Tools help us in life, tools help us go on journeys, tools are our method to accomplish everything that has ever happened since the dawn of time. To me they are without a doubt the greatest musical experience to behold, taking your mind on journey's and finding something inside yourself, painting pictures for you third eye to see that make you reflect internally and externally and to feel something out of the mundane. To breath to feel to know I'm alive! Much love, peace and happy new year! Subbed!
