Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, and Layne Staley of Alice in Chains are widely considered to be the “Big Four” of Grunge music. Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots was another big voice of the era.

@@soude85 Yeah, it was mostly born out of the resentment for Nirvana I think 😄 The grunge movement took a lot of attention away from the bands that were big at that time (like Guns 'n Roses etc.). MTV Unplugged... should have called it Midas, 'cause almost everything it touched turned to solid gold. Pearl Jam is one of the big four Grunge bands from the early 90s, all of which shared one thing in common: each had a once-in-a-generation sort of voice leading them - Kurt Cobain for Nirvana, Layne Staley for AIC, Chris Cornell for Soundgarden, and here Eddie Vedder for Pearl Jam.

If you want to see a good live performance w8th Eddie "standing up," "Even Flow" is great. I highly recommend the official music video for "Jeremy," which is no longer censored as it was in the 90s. It's in part about a real boy who was bullied until he sh0t himself in front of his class. Mind you, this was years before Columbine. Pretty much anything from their MTV Unplugged is worth a listen, especially "Alive." Still touring, and still awesome live.

Eddie Vedder saved me from seriious harm. Iin 1993 I went to see them as a 16 year old. During the concert the crowd moved forward and i got trampled. I was on the floor and people were standing on top of me. Ed saw what was happening and called to rhe audience to get me up. I was crowdsurfed over to security with nothing more than a few bruises. This was even before Roskilde, and only when that happened, I realised how lucky I had been.

We had some pretty amazing talent in the vocalist department around this time. Eddie Vedder in Pearl Jam, Layne Staley in Alice in Chains, Chris Cornell in Soundgarden (then Chris did some awesome stuff with Audioslave). And all of those bands (as well as Curt Cobain in Nirvana) knew how to write fantastic music with poetic and profound lyrics when they wanted to. I think you would appreciate hearing Eddie Vedder performing the song he did for the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert/album. He did “Masters of War” and it is sooooo good! It would also be great to see you dive into some more Alice In Chains. Unlike most people, I do not recommend the Unplugged versions of these. To me, watching Layne was just sad and he lacked his usual power. We were watching a dead man walking on that show. Just go with the regular video or album versions instead. Some good ones to get you started are: Rooster Down In A Hole (talk about some poetic lyricism…this definitely has that in spades) Would? Them Bones Rain When I Die

One of the only bands ever that is soo good live that it sounds produced, even when you're there. I seen them many times in the early to mid 90's, there was nothing like them. The era all together was like that

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life. I know you’ll be a Star …. In somebody’s else’s Sky … but why can’t it be Mine?” ❤ you HAVE TO let them go.. there’s no choice.. you can’t control it.. life has chosen for you..

Nice man. Just stumbled upon your channel looking to watch this performance. I liked your breakdown. You dissected the lyrics even in a way I didn’t see it. And gave me much more appreciation towards a song I’ve loved since I was a kid. Thanks man.

That falsetto you were admiring is Jeff Ament, who plays bass. You should definitely check out more Pearl Jam - their first album, Ten, is rightfully consistently voted one of the best albums of all time. If you want another song that’s going to punch you in the narrative, try Jeremy.

Love your insight on song lyrics and I couldn't wait to hear you analyze this one! Wish you dig a little deeper cuz these lyrics are brutal. Deep, painful, dark, heartbreaking lyrics but so perfect. Eddie pours 100% emotion into it and you can tell it's still a tough song to perform emotionally. The one line that makes the whole song "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star. In somebody else's sky, buy WHY? WHY CANT IT BE MINE?" We belong together! 😢😢

For me... this song is the greatest piece of poetry written in my almost 60 years of life. Lyrical brilliance that makes you feel the pain of a breakup in a way that no other written words have ever done... that I know of.

THIS is the song I wanted to hear your reaction. The album TEN is second to none. Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam are releasing another album this month. Btw Black was recorded in 1991. Eddie Vedder just celebrated is 59th birthday.

I remember seeing Eddie Vedder in Orlando in the 90's as an up abd coming band with this album but until I heard this version of Black I had no frigging idea of how good and deep his song writing and singing were. WOW

Grew up on his music through my Mom, who sees him any chance she can get. He's finally coming back here in the summer, and I know my Mom will love it. Bought one of his best albums for her birthday later - Vs. has some of his best music in my opinion. I recommend Indifference or Daughter
