Fun Fact: Ziggy Stardust is a character Bowie created with the help of his then-wife, Angela. The character's name was inspired by the '60s psychobilly musician, Legendary Stardust Cowboy. Bowie performed under the Stardust persona for about a year. This specific song is about Stardust growing too conceited: "Making love with his ego, Ziggy sucked up into his mind." Stardust's band, The Spiders From Mars, consequently plan to get revenge on the egotistical front man: "So we bitched about his fans, and should we crush his sweet hands?" Bowie said that the song is "about the ultimate rock superstar destroyed by the fanaticism he creates." - This Song Was On The First Guitar Hero Game!

Fun fact : the second line of the song "Jammin' good with Weird and Gilli" is a nod to the band Gong (awesome space/jazz/funk/psychedelic rock, react to stuff from The Flying Teapot or Camembert Electrique albums if you dare!), Weird was Daevid Allen (the band's founder and driving force) and Gilli Smyth was his partner in the band and life. Bowie was a big fan, loved the wild weirdness of it all and the band's guitar player, Steve Hillage is an unsung genius.

I just like the idea of the rest of the band being a bunch of northern english lads (hardy bread and butter with lots of pints down the pub type) being convinced to wear make up and stretchy colorful fabric. According to Bowie, their transition created a lot of interest with the ladies, thus being the reason they stuck to it.

The full title of the album is "Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars". The city of Hull is in England, on the East Coast. David Bowie's real name is David Jones, but he changed it after The Monkees, with Davey Jones, became popular. One of Bowie's nicknames was "The Thin White Duke".

I remember going to see Bowie in Toronto many years ago. The lights were shut off and we could hear the opening music for 'Space Oddity'. Then a spotlight focused on him in a cherry lift with his orange hair, white makeup caked on his face and a blue lightening bolt across his face from ear to ear. It was GREAT!!!

He wasn't eating back then, he was living on heroin. He gave up a few years later, but he created some genius music before he did. He went to America to make Young Americans, got clean, went to Berlin with Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, and found heroin again. Then Australia, and he gave up horse and snow. And toured with Nine Inch Nails.

I'm really impressed by your perceptiveness about David Bowie! 1.He had mental illness in his close family and at least in his younger years was terrified of developing it himself. 2. A few years after this video he got even skinnier as he was living on a diet of only milk, peppers and cocaine, but he was pretty much recovered by the mid to late 70s. 3. A lot of people hear something like rap in the song Golden Years, and he has a song called African Night Flight which is definitely not rap but actually comes pretty close.

Bowie had it pretty much together till he moved to America. The reason he got so skinny is he lived on a diet of just milk and cocaine. And yet he still made some great music by soaking up so many American influences. Eventually he had to crash though and moved to Berlin with Iggy pop and worked with Brian Eno and Lou Reed. The Berlin Trilogy is some of the best music he ever made.

There was a period, in the mid-70s (sort of post-Ziggy but certainly in the waning days of that era) that Bowie was by his own admission subsisting on cocaine and milk. By the time we get to Young Americans/Station to Station, aka the Thin White Duke era, he was incredibly thin and not in good mental or physical health. He managed to get clean of coke by travelling to Berlin - where heroin was the drug of choice, though he claims he was able to abstain from it - and wrote the albums Low, Heroes and Lodger, essentially his blue period, whilst in Europe getting his head straight.

Bowie has always had a sort of strange otherworldly presence, even when he was a younger man. The mismatched eyes, the high cheek bones, his thin elongated physicality. He also trained in mime and dance, I believe, and was fascinated by esoteric philosophy like Nietzsche, Crowley, Bill Burroughs and the like. It's no wonder when they were making The Man Who Fell to Earth, they cast him as an alien that gets caught up in mankind's self-destructive tendencies. Or that Jim Henson cast him as the Goblin King, or Nolan as Nicola Tesla.
