Satch is the greatest, and Surfing With The Alien was the album that got me to pick up a guitar. His runs and riffs are lyrical...and while he does some vocal work on later albums, he's a much better player than singer :) The players he has taught is mind-blowing. "Summer Song" would be a good one for you, as would be the title track from Surfing With The Alien.

@@Me-qp8vz no, I’m definitely referring to Surfing (the track) - but you bring up an excellent point win “Always With Me…” - another incredible track, but I thought these guys would appreciate Surfing more on a first listen. There’s not a bad track on that entire album.

@@gamarraelnegro624 The story as I recall it is that Kirk went to Joe for lessons and was basically wanting Joe to show him/teach him how to solo over the Metallica riffs. Joe said that he didn't necessarily want to show Kirk too much because he didn't want Kirk to just be emulating Joe's ideas in Metallica. He thought Kirk was good already and just needed to spend time with it and learn his own style and that was going to be better for Kirk in the long run.

I had finished an MTV shoot with David Bowie ( I Want My MTV) the morning before his Giant's Stadium "Sight and Sound" tour performance. I was off for the afternoon and hanging out backstage, and wandered over to whom I thought was the Guitar Tech for the Tour, changing strings , adjusting the truss rods etc. We talked for about an hour or so.. the next thing I know, he straps on a guitar and says "Well...time to go to work!" Walks out into the Spotlight........"Ladies and Gentlemen, Joe Satriani!" Nicest guy in the Business! No ego, just another player willing to share his Vast Knowledge!

Here are some things about Satch, first he's clearly an immortal. He was probably in his mid-50s when this was recorded. He's looked the same forever. Secondly his tones are super listenable so even when he's shredding at a million miles an hour it doesn't sound like Angry Hornets it's all smooth and meilodic. Next, he puts a real emphasis on catchy Melodies In His instrumental work. Kind of "YYZ" in their execution and when I saw him last the audience sang along to all the instrumental parts. Pretty crazy. Lastly yes he was born to it but this guy put in a zillion hours teaching himself the mechanics of the guitar from the ground up, how to write catchy melodies, how to keep an audience engaged, how to tour on a limited budget because he was an independent artist for years and years, and ultimately how to practice effectively so that you get the most out of it each time you do it. People throw the word virtuoso around a lot but truth of the matter is virtuoso is raw ability that you are born to and putting in the time to perfect it. Side note: As a guitar instructor he taught Kirk Hammett from Metallica and the guys from Exodus, he produced one of the groundbreaking death metal albums in 1990.. Possessed's " The Eyes Of Horror" where he met Larry Lalonde the guitarist who went on to be in Primus ... many many many Bay Area legendary things he's been involved in above and beyond his guitar playing career.

I'm a big Satch fan. He's so good at showing off his skills while still writing actual "songs"--there's identifiable verses, choruses, bridges, and solos. There's structure there and I think that's what really elevated him over a lot of other shredders and enabled him to have a 35-year career. He writes melodies you can hum. Glad you went with the live version. Not only does he sound great live, but you get to see some of his techniques and how he's pulling some of this off. If you want more, "Surfing With the Alien" "Satch Boogie" "Summer Song" "Flying in a Blue Dream" and are all great choices. Maybe "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" if you want to have your minds blown. I also highly recommend something like "Always With Me, Always With You" to see how he writes a simple sweet ballad and puts his unique spin on it.

Another amazing guitarist that people don't talk about enough is Guthrie Govan. He's been playing for a long time, started learning guitar when he was about 3 years old, figured out every melody he heard by ear until now he's just this unstoppable musical force on the instrument. Not just crazy chops but super tasty note choice and feel, full of surprises all while improvising and he can play pretty much any style he wants AND....(catches breath).....he keeps it fun! Like a lot of people didn't find out about him until stumbling into his music on YT but he blew my mind by basically making the guitar both sing and shred at the exact same time. I could keep gushing all day but instead I'll just say you should check out his songs "Fives", "Waves" or "Wonderful Slippery Thing" from his solo album Erotic Cakes, or basically anything he did with his supergroup The Aristocrats. There's even a video on YT from when he worked for a guitar magazine and played one seamless guitar solo while I'm imitating all these other famous guitarists (it was some sort of award show or reader's poll thing). If you're doing a best guitarist showdown, you gotta check out Guthrie.

Satriani was a guitar teacher and his students included Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett. Enough said. I think his album Crystal Planet is flawless. Joe is currently 65. He found out Jimi Hendrix died at football practice when he was 14. He immediately quit the team and bought a guitar to learn how to play. He is the best selling guitarist who makes instrumental albums. (He sang on one album.) He has released 17 studio albums. This song is off his breakthrough second album, Surfing With the Alien from 1987. This video is from 2006 when he was 50. He just looks young. His wife must be satisfied. Satch is the shit. The 80s was the era of shredders with many guitarists able to have solo careers based on instrumental guitar music. Other names from that 80s era include Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, and of course Eddie Van Halen.

Joe Satriani is incredible! His live shows are phenomenal! 🎸 🔥 You need to check out British Guitar virtuoso Guthrie Govan.

Surfing With the Alien is a mandatory album to own if you are serious about Rock. This dude was an instructor to other Rockstars ok? This guy is one of the highest level Rock guitarists agreed on by everyone. You want to know what blister speed, badass playing is about? The second song off Surfing is called Ice 9. You’re welcome mother fuckers. Pure skill, and serious songcraft. Take a BIG hit of whatever first and crank it the fuck up as it’s supposed to be.

One of the best guitarists. Alot of really good players cut their teeth on his teaching. Still playing strong. GO TO HIS SHOW!

Satch does sing occasionally, but he prefers instrumentals. In Big Bad Moon he sings and also plays the guitar with a harmonica.

If you liked Joe Satriani, you all need to check out one of his protégés: Steve Vai. My suggestion is “the attitude song” live from Denver. G3 concert. It will blow your mind! 🤘😁🤘

Satch actually quit the football team the day Hendrix died in 1970. He decided to throw all his weight from that day forward into guitar. It's funny you guys say he seems cocky, Satch is considered one of the nicest and most humble guys in music. He's also been married to the same woman for almost forty years. He wrote a song named after her you should definitely hear, "Rubina". You guys are thinking of Stevie T (Steve Terreberry). Steve Vai, one of Joe Satriani's students, definitely belongs on your list of greatest guitarists ever.
