A lot of people misinterpretate the lyrics in this song. Trent wrote these lyrics to himself and its actually about self destruction/drug addiction, calling him self out. Also at first the track sounds like a catchy poppy industrial track, but the beauty of NIN is when you dig deeper there is a lot of interesting ideas going on production wise and in the layers.

@@kristaspecht This isn't the official meaning. It is still unknown and probably always will be. The most specific thing Trent ever said about it was that the album was about someone stripping away every aspect of their life while going through a process of deterioration...a downward spiral. And even that was stated before the album was completed, so the exact theme may have shifted.

This is NIN's most popular song. It's so overplayed, and I often skip it when I'm listening to a shuffle of Trent's body of music. That being said, I still think it's an absolute banger. It just pales in comparison to much of his other work. Much like Tool, Trent pushes the boundaries of what music can be. The guy is a genius, and once you go down the NIN rabbit hole, you'll start to see why his work is so revered. The man has accomplished so much, not just as NIN.

Most popular? Come on now. The hand that feeds. Something I can never have. Way more popular. This may be the most popular NIN song for people that don't know who performs it, but NIN fans for sure have far more favorites than this one.

@MNelson900 2 жыл бұрын
@@joejacobsen6822 I didn't say Nine Inch Nails doesn't have other popular songs.. I said it is NIN *most popular* song, meaning generally. That's an objective fact. Just go on Spotify, and you'll see that 'Closer' has been streamed almost twice as many times as the 2nd most popular song, 'The Hand That Feeds'. It doesn't matter if Trent's most ardent fans, people like me, don't like it as much as others. I'm talking in a broader sense; fans and nonfans alike.

I don’t really know how anyone can disagree with you here. Granted I’m not the biggest NIN fan, however I do enjoy several songs from them but I’ve never even heard of “Something I Can Never Have” I would assume “Wish” and “Only” would even be more popular than a song I’ve never even heard of. Not trying to be an ass, but “Closer” would be my number 1 guess as to which of their songs was most popular.

This song is off of 'The Downward Spiral', which is pretty much entirely about drug addiction. Not a bad song, by any means (far from it, in fact), but when people first hear this song, they immediately think it's about sex without diving into the context of it being part of the album. And in that context, the song has a veeeeeery different meaning. The song still gets radio airplay (albeit heavily edited). For more off the same album, I'd say check out "March of the Pigs" or "Reptile".

The video of this song is so weird. But I think it is so good. It goes along the song perfectly, not like tool ones, I get distracted by those

Limp Bizket used the hook from this in their song Hotdog. Fred Durst also mentioned "9 inch nails get knocked the fuck out" during the same song

You can hear this song playing in pretty much any city on the radio on any given day. I even heard this playing in a Dunkin Donuts recently.

There’s a reason Trent has won multiple Grammys, Oscars, is already in the RnR Hall of Fame, and is beloved in the industry. He’ll go down as one of the most influential musicians of the last 100 years. Dude knows how to write a hook and a beat

NIN is great. i did not appreciate Trent's artistry when i was younger. But his music has always been something that grabs your attention and speaks to the deeper parts in you. Currently on my playlist are some good Nails tracks - Only, Everyday is Exactly the Same, Less Than

This song was definitely played A LOT on the radio. Words were just bleeped out. The video was also played on MTV. Also, this song was played in probably every strip club through out the 90s.

They used to play this on alternative radio when it came out. It’s weird how sanitized we’ve become over the years.
