I saw them Jan. 2020 in ATL, GA. I knew every song in the set except this one. I regrettably admit I did not listen to much of Fear Innoculum before the show. I had heard like 4 songs they did from it, but Descending slipped me. I was relatively new to TOOL so I reopened the investigstion and BANGO. Its my absolute favorite song on the album and easily Top 10 in the entire catalogue

If Pneuma was Danny’s song then Descending has to be Adam’s. For a guy who is often criticized for not touting his technical abilities the guy is a beast and when you hear his sound there is no mistaking it. As a musician I’d rather be known for a unique sound and style versus shredding at the speed of light. To each their own but that’s my take.

Carson Large If you think this song is about that, you are not a true member of the Tool family and need to search inside your soul for answers because that isn’t even remotely close to the true lesson of this masterpiece. Do not cheapen this song to make it fit your bullshit narrative. Tool is far deeper and more meaningful than you could even begin to fathom. This is not a call to arms to defend some fallacy that you have been fed by a narcissistic liar. This is about so much more than that and it pisses me off that anyone could think that it holds such shallow meaning.

This is the thing about Tool. I waited 13 years for Fear Inoculum. When I bought it at 6am the day it came out, and for the next year, it was all about the songs Fear Inoculum, Pneuma, Invincible, and Tempest. I would have told you those were the best songs on the album. Then I find something in Culling Voices, and I get hooked on that track for months, so I would have ranked that as the best song (besides Pneuma, that has been my fav since day 1), but now over the last month or so Descending has become incredible to me, and now this is probably my 2nd fav song after Pneuma. These songs speak to me equally, at different times. For the longest time I wasn’t crazy about The Grudge or Rosetta Stoned. Now I cant even breathe when I listen to them. I think these songs need to be heard 10-15 times to be fully appreciated. Aenima is my fav album & has been since 96, but the rest have changed over years. I’m rambling, all I know is this band is like no other, and hearing songs 15 years later they still give me goosebumps. God please let them make another album. 🙏🏻

I think this song showcases each of them at different times. The entire first half highlights the lyrics, and not just because of MJK’s singing. The music totally highlights this, especially at the point right before the final verse when Danny just STOPS for about 4-5 secs which to me is just a moment for MJK and Danny to wind up for the final verse before the song moves into the next stage. But you seem to be overlooking that what the song keeps coming back to is Justin Chancellor’s bass line. That to me is what the entire song is based around which is a descending (pun intended) three note melody. These guys work together so well and also manage to switch leads seamlessly to pick up where the other leaves off when changing over.

OMG! This just took me back to seeing them live. I was lucky enough to get to see them three times in May 2019 before the album had dropped and this was one of the songs they were playing from the new album. Hearing it that first night I just began to cry. I was so blown away. On the third night I closed my eyes and just listened and I was transported somewhere else as well. Most amazing experience! I seriously cannot wait for y’all to see them live. You will be fully indoctrinated then. There’s no going back after that. Welcome to your new addiction at that point. Seeing them live is not just a concert, it’s a spiritual experience. ❤️✌️❤️

There's a Led Zeppelin tribute band called "Get the Led Out" (they're fantastic, btw), and their website used to say something to the effect of "when we groew up our parents went to concerts to listen to Bach and Mozart, but 100 years from now people will do the same with Led Zeppelin." I feel the same way about Tool, and quite frankly the reception of Fear Inoculum album serves as proof that will likely be the case. While it will be next to impossible to create the "perfect playlist" to pay tribute to Tool 100 years from now, I've felt since the first day I heard it that Descending is an obvious no-brainer to become one of the absolute signature works of art from Tool that no one will ever forget.

Danny makes those sounds with electric drum pads called mandala pads. He has a hybrid drum kit where he has 7 of those along with an old korg wavedrum and a roland handsonic. He has them all running into a laptop computer on stage with a program called battery by native instruments. He also has an old school analog synthesizer that he uses for segways between songs and for the sounds during chocolate chip trip. His drum kit is unbelievable. Got to see it up close and personal at the tool music clinic at the agora in Cleveland in the spring of 2018.

The packaging for 10,000 days features a set of stereoscopic 'glasses' for viewing the pairs of images which are called stereograms. Got a grammy award for the packaging, too. The Fear Inoculum CD packaging has a damn LCD screen with a stored video of some pretty heady tool stuff, fractal merkabas and whatnot. Makes me feel like their packaging is a bit of a love note to the age of vinyl where the physical product was a more tangible thing. But yes, I'm that weirdo that still buys CDs. Not sorry.

You're not a weirdo 😂😂 I still buy cds and vinyl too. I grew up with both formats including cassettes. I love being able to hold the physical item in my hands, read the liner notes and the lyrics etc. When Fear came out I was so happy I was able to get the cd. The packaging is so f'n unique and beautiful. This is why Tool is such a phenomenal band. Not only do they focus on the music 100%, but Adam Jones' attention to detail and the creation of the packaging is just as important as well. Looking through my mother's record collection from the 60s and 70s makes me nostalgic for that era. The guys in Tool grew up during the 70s and their music and album art are clear reflections of that. It's a dying art form. I'm so happy Tool are keeping that flame alive. Gotta love these geniuses.
