Are you gonna do “God of Emptiness”? That song is so fascinating in how groundbreaking and inviting to newbies it was for death metal

10:21 i loved that flanger effect when i first heard it. I think it's only one channel, too. Treys' compositional and playing abilities might not be the techiest in the realm of death metal, but he truly tries to build expiramental worlds with his guitar parts. My favorite technique he uses is when he has a tremelo part in one channel and a chuggier counterpoint riff in another. Later albums have a lot of these predominately and while it can be disorienting in terms of stereo balance its still pretty menacing.

Cool VARVIS intro riff The summoning of demons is such a common theme in metal. I feel like the theme of Satan has become synonymous with metal and I'm glad people like periphery are taking the piss with albums like "Hail Stan". Occult stuff has gotten so oversaturated to the point of pretty much being ironic at this point. The stereotypical pentagram stuff is really not the point tbh. I think metal has always been more about diverging from the norms of society and creating a poetic social commentary where the heavy music matches the heavy themes and not being edgy. The whole new age movement of spirituality is actually kinda sad so I'm glad you did a video about Thelemic demonic stuff cuz people don't really get that it's not just imagery and these artists are actually doing Magik in an Alestar Crowley way so people can get some awareness that it's not just something to look cool. I can imagine doing blood rituals in the woods can't be good for the artist's mental or physical health hahaha.

I remember I wanted to listen morbid angel, because somewhere I heard about them, turned up Rapture music video... "It's fucking evil" I thought then. Before I only listened to pantera, metallica, slipknot and amon amarth. *From those times Morbid Angel my favourite band too.

It's a really good album and probably my only complaint could be that Angel of Disease sounds out of place with the rest of the album BUT i do love that song. Out of the first 7 MA albums id probably say its my 5th favourite purely for tbe fact its quite a 'safe' album for MA's standards. Apart from God of Emptiness which is a bit more experimental.

I prefer Death Metal Pre 1996 before Cannibal Corpse's Vile release. Once that album came out it become the standard for what death metal bands wanted to be. Before that most bands had a unique sound and were still developing the death metal sound. I have a list of albums that blew my mind when I first heard it. Covenant is at the top of that list. To me this is the best metal album ever made. I can go on all day why I love this record but its the production, the anger, the speed, the grinding overdriven guitars, the leads that sound like portals to hell and brutal pounding of the bass and drums. If there is one complaint I could make about this record is that the vocals in a few parts are almost comical due to how Dave barks them out. I prefer his vocal performance on Domination a little more.

Morbid Angel did make death metal perfection with Covenant. Most people just know God of Emptiness which in my opinion is the worst track but still passable. There are so many go for the throat riffs and drumwork on this album. And I know Vincent can be a complete turd but his vocals compliment the music. Bands from 1993 wish they could spit out an album like Covenant and bands today that know wish they could too
