In this video I restored a 17mm ratchet which I bought from a private guy online.
I was told that this ratchet is approximately from the 1930's and it was found at a farm which was property of the sellers family. Since it has a fixed socket with 17mm it was most likely part of a tool kit for an agricultural vehicle.
It also works only one way, meaning that there most likely was another one for opening screws.

You did a great job of smoothing the surface around the engraving without removing the engraving itself. ❤ I guess that next you could restore a 1930s tractor to go with the wrench... 🤔

Noob question: Why did only the spring and that one other part get blued?

That’s a totally legit question. The spring got cold blued because it is located in the inside so I can’t really keep it clean. It happened to me many times that springs corrode and the cold bluing is for preventing that. The other part got cold blued only for aesthetic reasons. As you may have seen in my other ratchet restorations I really like the satin/brushed finish with some black details so I wanted to continue that “tradition” 🙂

I don’t usually do nickel plating because I don’t like it and mostly it’s not necessary. Also nickel isn’t that great of a corrosion protection plus it is one of the most common allergens 🙂 Thank you for your comment!
