This was my first real motorcycle. I saved up $300. To buy it. Got to the dealer and they had to add sales tax of $15. I didn’t have it. I was devastated. We were leaving and they agreed to sell it for $300 out the door. I was 11 years old and it was worth it all

I saved from age 9 to age 12 to buy a 1972 Yamaha GT-80. I think it was $380.00 I think my Father actually kicked in $120.00 .

She's a keeper, if ya have kids teach them to ride on that. I still have my 1975 XR 75 bought new in 75 my girls learned to ride it and now grandkids are riding it.

My father bought his 74 xr75 brand new and kept it for when he had a kid. I learned to ride on it and so did my wife. Thousands of hours on that thing and it still looks brand new and starts first kick.

Man Joe… I can't even imagine being a kid and having something that cool. I grew up from the age of 10 years old with mini bikes and motorcycles but it took a few years before I had anything with what could be considered "real suspension" and stuff like that. And boy they really nailed the sound on that bike. It sounds awesome. Thanks for the content!!!

My first ever dirt bike as a kid. Yamaha 60 JT1 (Red version). It was old and Non-Current but I rode the wheels off of that thing (not literally because it was indestructible) . Every day after Football practice, after Basketball practice, after Wrestling practice and everyday of summer I was out riding that thing. Never did a piston & ring job, it started first or 2nd kick every single time. I remember meeting Honda Factory Mini Factory Racer Rick Simmet (Google him) and him looking so crazy at my little Yamaha but we did lap after lap after lap that day. Anything that he did on his Pro Circuit Factory Honda CR80 I did on my little Yamaha 60 JT1 which now when I look back was crazy. Miss that little bike. All that I have left is the Original Owners Manual (missing the front cover) and a Photo of it in our old backyard.

I too had the JT 1, 1971 Red 60cc. My dad bought it for me in 1972 I was 7. I still have it but it sure doesn’t look like that anymore. I’m 58 and still cannot bear to part with it

I had two of these bikes when I was a kid. An orange one and a yellow one like yours. First bikes I learned how to ride. These things are bulletproof!

I’ve been buying or finding old Japanese bikes since I was about 10. Have a love of these old school motorcycles from the 60s and 70s. Have owned and sold many. My favorite was the Yamaha DT1. Have owned 2. I’m sure I’ll have more in the future. Love watching your videos man

I had the same model as a 12 yr. Old Yamaha enduro 60 burnt orange . Mine had the the headlight and tail lights as well turn signals . As a kid seemed like it would out run all the Honda 50’s and most Honda 70’s. It had a 60 mph speedometer but 47 was about it .

My first bike as well (11years old)… my dad took me to the dealer, purchased it.. put it in the wagon.. I explained how it would be so effective on my paper route… The next day he took me to the bank… I had my first payment book.. $23.70/mo. I’ve had over a dozen bikes… (and surgeries) loved to race.. went from this to a cr250 husky in 74.. and graduated on a yz450f few years back..had to pay for that fun too… so nostalgic

Brings back memories of my youth, a friend had a gt80 the bigger brother to the jt60 another an xr80 and I had an elsinore 125 and there were a couple mx's. We road forestry roads every where. Not uncommon to put a couple hundred miles on in a weekend. Those older bikes were very reliable and fun as heck for a group of 12yr olds.

You're describing my youth! I had an MX80 (1980). We were about 20 bikes and I spent my weekends riding the forestry roads north of Montreal.

I have just restored a 1974 Kawasaki G4 TR Agricultural bike in Australia that had the same carby choke idle setup as the Yamaha you have. But this bike had dual range gearbox so it had 10 gears all up. An amazing little bike that still ran but was a complete rusty mess. Bought it at a garage sale for $100 Australian and just sold it for $1600.00, pretty much what I put into but it was the process of restoring the bike that I really enjoyed.

Oh the memories. I was five years old and kept complaining that my Honda 50 was too slow. A family friend found me one of these and I was stoked! What a great little bike. It was the start of a life with the 2 stroke sickness.

When we were kids, we were out riding in the woods. My buddy's bike quit and it didn't look like he was getting spark but it was hard to tell in the midday summer sun. He had the bright idea to hold the plug while I kicked it over. It didn't take me long to realize that it was getting good spark. He made up new curse words.

I had a 1975 MX80 , As you see , What a bike , hooked for life , I still ride today. In 75 there was a cool graphic on the tank . It needed a spark plug now and then , otherwise trouble free. Thanks for the memory's. I had commented on your buried bike , to check the exhaust , this one had a blockage. Great content , Thanks

Those little bikes also had full street lighting on them. Most people took the lights off and used them for offroad use. That 60cc rotary valve 2-stroke engine is rock reliable too. Gap your points around 0.015" and it should run nicely. Sparkplug should be an NGK B8HS plug. That little bike rips! Do check the oil injection pump, should be working just fine. Those are pretty foolproof. Great find, Joe! Thanks for a great video!

Nice find. It’s a ‘72 JT2MX. Did not come with lights, just a white from number plate. I have a ‘72 JT2-L, orange color with lights

My exact fist bike. 1971 jt1 mini enduro. Most came with lights, just like the bigger dt enduros. These were the mx versions. I can hear the baffle is gone, it is a substantial powergain, just being gone. Thanks, brought back alot of memories. You see they are bulletproof, still going strong. Probably the original piston and all. Hope you go on and restore it though. These were the first minibike that were a real motorcycle.

Almost as good as the content, are the comments from people who had these things in their childhoods, and this brings up so many fond memories. Makes me want to go get my daughter's little pit bike out of the basement (parked 15 years ago after she crashed it into the trampoline, and would never go near it again). I gave that bike to her when she was 12. After that, I got her a little Suzuki LT80, quad, which she still rides to this day.

I had a silver one, great bikes and as you found pretty quick. we won some races in the 80cc class before graduating to the first 1976 YZ80's to hit the market , love the channel stay the course.👍

My brother bought one as a 13 year old kid, that was in bad shape in 1971, with its 60cc 2 stroke rotary valve engine. I was learning how to built and fix small engines and was able to help him get it running. We took it apart, including the engine. Had to have the engine cylinder bored 20 over, and I was already experimenting with porting engines. We cleaned it up, rebuilt the engine, changed the engine gear to the chain drive, rebuilt and upgraded the clutch springs, and that thing ran very well. Beat a few bikes with bigger engines.😊

Just shows how you can have just as much fun on a small bike as a large one… and when you come off you might survive! Good ol’ Vinnie can keep up with the little bike up to max speed in 2nd gear - not bad for those young little legs! Great find!! That caught my eye in your last video. I've always had a love for old DT Enduros. I had the GT80 and a slew of YZs and an 84 IT490, but my first bike i ever had was a 72 DT360. I'm excited to see this one!!

That was the first dirt bike I ever owned, my stepdad bought it for me for my 7th birthday, I’ve been riding and racing ever since. Four speed, all down.

Turned out to be a sweet little bike and a super easy repair. Nothing wrong with getting one of those every once in a while. I first learned to ride a bike with a manual clutch on one similar to that. I think it was a 77’ or 78’ Yamaha 80. Not the YZ model. I was only able to ride it for about five minutes cause the kid that owned it was much for sharing…lol. Cool video, brings me back.

Road the street legal ones for our motorcycle classes back long ago, Yamaha dealer loaned them to our school to train on in the school parking lot, Wow bringing history back to days of remembrance. Another Great Video Joe, ps. Notice the shop floor needs a shinning, the work area needs a shine, I Notice you like all things to shine, I just happen to Notice your workshop floor is missing its shine, lol of all things for me to Notice. 😊

I had the same exact bike when I was 7yrs old it was my second dirt bike my owned, my first bike was a QA-50 pee green in color wow brings back so many memories. The rear tire on your bike was replaced the original tire was the same as the front tire that is on your bike. Thanks for sharing

My friends younger brother had one in the 70's, when my Bultaco was down I would borrow it and ride with guys on 125's, I could keep up with them in the tight stuff through the woods, the bike was a blast.

Love seeing you wearing gloves. You are into the solvents and gas all the time. It will pay off in the future. I rode one of these as a kid. How I learned how to shift gears. Loved it.

In the early 70s my grandfather bought one of these used for my brother and I to learn how to ride with a clutch. We had the old pull cord minibikes before and I was just too small, and that minibike would not run very well. I put more than a few miles on that Yamaha motorcycle. That was my first lessons in learning how to work on a motorcycle. I lived in the hills in Tennessee and would get stuck back on the power lines on that bike. Staring at a hill between me and home. I had to keep a spark plug wrench and tools inside the tool kit. Oh yeah, I always had a problem with the chain coming off . Many smiles and many tears.

Bought one brand new in 1972. I was 12 worked all year to add to my savings...I think it was about $325. Had the orange one with yellow stripes, that came with head lamp tail lamp and horn. That hot little sound brings up memories.

I have a special place in my heart for DT’s. My first was a DT125. Joe you live in the Hot Spot area for 70’s motorcycles. There are still many left in barns, sheds, and etc.

Added Hooker header and a green weenie. Eventually painted it myself. Raced it and rode the prairies of Colorado from sunrise to sunset.

Great find! I had 3 of those bikes when I was young. (two 80's and one 60) I was decent mechanically and brought two home in my parents wheel burrow that I got off my neighbors who couldn't fix them for cheap. The reason it is so loud is it is missing the tail pipe of the exhaust.

I had 2 of them back in the 90s! A yellow one and a white one! 3 speed trans, manual clutch, wow what fun! My friend and I used to race each other, I was heavy, he was thin and the one that had the stinger made them even if I was on that one. Im talking 60 to 80 lbs heavier I was. One had bad gears so I had them hard welded on the sides and I resized them after. Never had a problem after that. Gears were discontinued, and good luck finding used!
