Join our producer as he goes behind the scenes with Pilot and crew of the Lewis Air Legends Douglas A-20 Havoc. The team, from San Antonio, Texas has been coming to Freeport, Illinois since July of 2016 when, in on its Maiden voyage to Oshkosh, the A-20 had engine failure forcing it to land in Freeport.
The crew has made 5 trips to Freeport since then replacing two engines and doing a complete annual inspection on the historic plane. Our producer spent some time with the crew as they made final preparations to complete A-20’s mission to make it to Oshkosh.
The WWII light bomber, stored at the Albertus Airport for nearly a year, is the only known airworthy A-20 in the world. The plane made its final departure from Freeport today, on Mother's Day 2017 for Oshkosh.
Enjoy this exclusive behind the scenes rare look at one truly incredible airplane and the cool people behind it.
You can buy an image collection of the day and get 55 images of the bird for $30.00 here.

This exact plane flew DIRECTLY over my house in San Antonio yesterday. It circled the area a few times before landing at KSAT. I heard it coming and was able to get some video of it from my back yard. It was glorious. there was a trailing B-25 Mitchell flying with it

My dad was a young Army Air Corps B-25 pilot who served in North Africa during WWII. He also loved flying the A-20. Sad there aren't more Havocs flying.

Nothing like the sound of those big radials. As sweet as a Merlin purr sounds, you can't beat the R2600 or R2800 for auditory oomph.

Grandfather was one of the recon and unit photographers, unfortunately not referenced in the books I have found. The only photo I have of him posing with an A-20 was one in the 386th squadron, "O'Riley's Daughter II" which was previously "Gloria C. II". I have one airborne photo of his showing the markings of 3 of the A-20's, and that photo does not appear online. Are you the owner of the collection of photos in "Rampage of the Roarings 20's"?

@@vtbmwbiker that's great! I wish I'd been researching this earlier. I might have the only photo of the repainted name on that A-20, and of a USO show the book mentions may have been pre-deployment, but pilot Joseph Rutter's book "Wreaking Havoc" mentions a later one as well. I have written one song, and am attempting to produce video documentaries of the 312th, now deep in the writing of a first episode. Perhaps if you like the tone and quality, we might share some photographs. Happy St. Patrick's day, and thanks for preserving those photographs and providing them for "Rampage of the Roaring 20s"!

@@BearfootBob Absolutely. I visited the USAF museum as their A-20 is a 312th BG 389th BS paint job. I was in contact with Rutter before the 312th group organization disbanded. My dad came later into the unit -- May-June of 45 and would've transitioned to the B-32. I jump in his and his friends (100th BG) honor with the World War Two Airborne Demonstration Team. Keeps me connected.

You may want to revisit the chain-of-ownership and logs for this plane. I worked on it in 1973. It was bought from Howard Hughes in the late 60's by Willie Farah (Flew A20's in WWII) who owned Farah Manufacturing (El Paso, TX), at that time the worlds leading producer of men's and boys pants, with over 10,000 employees. It was a 4 year restoration where the plane had a devoted hangar, a devoted crew of A&E's, and a budget to see it finished. Willie took it down to the wheels and brought it back as original except for parts where metallurgy had made advancements. It's painted in Imron (olive drab, but still shines and is unbelievably slick). I watched Willie's first flight on runway 26 at El Paso International. Willie was masterful with the plane, especially close to the ground where the capabilities of the plane were amazing. it's great that the plane is surviving and in a budget capable environment. That credit goes to its current owner and crew. But the restoration credit goes to Willie.

2 A 20s were rebuilt to airworthy factory standard in Toowoomba Queensland, Australia by the RAAF back in the late 90s. Both aircraft were built from recovered airframes in Papua New Guinea. One was a Boston and the other was a Havoc.

What a great video! The cameraman would do well to remember his responses are being recorded (his Yeahs and Okays etc got a little distracting IMO) but that shouldn't take away from the editing and content. Great to hear from Stew Dawson and the engineers...and that final beat-up. WOW!

This was interesting. I also had an uncle that flew as gunner/ crew chief. He and two crew mates were lost September 6, 1945 off the northern coast of Okinawa. The only information passed to the family is that it suddenly spun out of formation, hit the ocean and sank immediately with all on board. No remains were recovered. I would like to know how crew members other than the pilot were able to get in or out of the plane. Another video indicated these planes would spin violently under power and recovery under 5000 ft was not possible

My dad flew Boston IIIs with RAF 114 Squadron in North Africa and the Med. He was SAAF, seconded to the RAF, and earned his DFC with them. He loved the Boston; said it was a joy to fly. Many years later he achieved more fame with having .303 Browning machine guns mounted under the wings of his V35A Bonanza. It was, as far as I know the only V35 Bonanza to have been armed that way. The aircraft was used in the Rhodesian Bush War of the 1970s, and returned to its civilian state at the cease of hostilities. This was a time when all civilian aircraft were pressed into service to help with the war effort. If you are interested, search for "Robin Watson's warbird". There are a couple of photos there. There's also a write-up on 1000aircraftphotos.com. Plans for arming came from the T34 Mentor, which, apparently, had the same wing. It was sold after he died in 1990, and sometime in the past 10 or so years, was shipped to the US, but the container was dropped, damaging the tail, and deemed too expensive to repair. I remember one day at Bulawayo airport looking at a Shrike Commander, when he pointed at it. "My boy, that's Ted Smith's creation. He designed the Boston, and I bet that will handle just like the Boston. Beautiful aeroplane..."

As a pilot I, like most pilots, would have wanted to have flown a P-47 or a P-51 in combat but...if I had been assigned to attack ships the A-20 "Havoc" would have been the "bird" I would have wanted to fly! This last flying example is beautiful!

How many forward firing machime gums was it able to carry? They have six in the nose here. I herd that they could carry eight more on wing mounts? If true, that`s a lot of shooting-up. Could they take out something like a pamzer IV D ?
