Wally Conran, the man often credited with "inventing" the Labradoodle, has gone on record saying that he completely regrets introducing the mixed breed to the public. He had a client who wanted to get a seeing eye dog, but she was allergic to most dogs and was interested in finding out if they could breed a dog that didn't trigger her allergies. He bred a poodle with a Labrador kind of as a Hail Mary. They sent fur/dander samples of the puppies to her for allergy testing, and SOME of the littermates were deemed hypoallergic. One of those puppies was then trained to become her service dog. Conran initially wanted to get the Labradoodle officially recognized as a breed so that, with the proper testing and healthy breeding practices, more people with allergies (or that live with people with allergies) could have access to service dogs. He did not anticipate how far the narrative would spin out of control. What started as an earnest attempt to help people with disabilities snowballed into irresponsible breeders Frankensteining dog breeds together with no regard for anyone's health, people's or dogs'.

@@victoriabeckfinat225 off topic, but we have a Chow Husky mix from an accidental breeding. He is the loveliest dog I have ever owned. His temperament is the best of both breeds, and he is beautiful. He is a bit neurotic from the Husky side, and very devoted to one person, my hubby, from the Chow side. If I had the time, maybe 20 years, and the resources I would be tempted to focus on a breeding program. But careless breeding will just cause heartache. My family bred Border Collies for years. There was always at least a two year waiting list because we refused to breed indiscriminately. We didn't breed our bitch unless we found a stud who would enhance our line (it usually worked out that she was bred twice, starting at two years old and ending at six). We bred for both temperament -- a well-rounded Border Collie should be able to relax and be a pet after the work day is done, and good structure. This was before they ever became popular in the general population.

I appreciate this too. You get bashed by anyone these days just because you want a PURE BREED dog. I’ve never bred nor will I, however it is very important to me to have the most healthy dog I can locate with proof of bloodlines of health records. People are way too fast to judge others without having any knowledge to back up their claims. I truly feel bad for GREAT breeders that stay TRUE to the breed. After several years of both of my 15 & 17 year old Dachshunds passing, I decided I wanted to get another ❤. I searched breeders near by & could not find one that doesn’t breed the “Piebalds” dachshund. I do not want a piebald bc I have done my research & they carry recessive genes that lead to many health complications, such as blindness, deafness & the list goes on. So I still do not have a dachshund 😢 as I cannot afford the actual price across states & then to have it shipped. It’s extremely sad what has been allowed to happen to our dog breeds. This will destroy many breeds for generations to come.

I get confused and might tell her the wrong thing. Poodles like to think and assess a situation. So they are perfect for this. She keeps me from going the wrong way, walking into things, walking across a road when it isn’t safe. bringing me to a place to sit down before I realize that anything was wrong. Many times I will tell her to do something and she doesn’t do it. Sometimes it wasn’t safe, sometimes it was the wrong direction, many many times I forgot something like my phone, jacket, purse etc. I need a dog that thinks and has an opinion. Poodles are big enough to do guide work and have the right temperament, the most incredible part is that they can be trained for any other type of service dog work as well. About a year later we began looking into getting a new dog, and I personally was strongly against getting another golden retriever because I feared like it would be like we were trying to replace our dog. That was until I met Weasley. We went to a suburban home to meet one of the best breeders I’ve ever seen. We got to meet the parents and puppies not once but twice before we took our big marshmallow home. They even had a rescue golden doodle. And the parents were absolutely gorgeous in only the way a well groomed and healthy active dog can be. They were English creams so they were a gorgeous Snow White with one litter of nine puppies all with different color coordinated colors. Both the parents and the puppies were clearly beloved family pets and certainly not money makers, though the puppies were pure bred so they cost an arm and a leg, but oh my gosh Weasley was worth every cent.

If people cared about getting a purebred dog they'd have done enough research to go to reputable breeder that doesn't let you put their dogs in shelters, you have to return them to the breeder if u can't take of the dog anymore. People that get these dogs don't care about health or temperament, they just want looks and that's why they end up at backyard breeders. But if they just want looks, or they want to brag about getting a "purebred" for cheap, they should start at the shelter. Shelter dogs are cheap (usually, some are getting more expensive) and usually mixed anyway, so it's better than shelling out money for a dog that's gonna cost you loads in vet bills later down the line

I got my white Doberman from a Doberman rescue when she was 8 months old. I had owned Dobermans in the past and knew I could provide her with the care she needed. Suffice to say, it is not easy. But when strangers comment on how beautiful she is and how to get one I tell them the expenses and upkeep first before anything else. As I was doing some research into the history of the Barbet breed, I was surprised to see just how FEW Barbets there are. Apparently there are under 200 Barbet puppies born every year, mostly because the gene pool is so small and legitimate breeders are trying to avoid hip dysplasia issues (thus narrowing the pool of viable parents.) Arguably, the breed did go extinct and is being reconstructed through the related poodles, Portuguese water dogs, and other generic barbet(wooly bearded) breeds.

The shelter took an x-ray and found that he was born without hip sockets, worst case of hip dysplasia they'd ever seen. He was put down shortly thereafter. He was such a good dog, but unfortunately he was in a lot of pain that we just didn't know about until he grew bigger. I still find myself crying like I did when I realised "put to sleep" was a euphemism 14 years later, he was my first dog and I loved him so much.

He was very difficult to train even with years of focus, attention and professional help. BUT he is an absolute sweetheart with family, he's constantly in love and protect mode when my newborn is around. He is sad and anxious with her when she cries, it's so sweet to watch. Someone I know has doodles. This person was almost convinced by the breeder that letting the doodles have puppies (using the male they have as a sire with female dogs arranged by the breeder) would be a GOOD thing, but thankfully their family managed to stop that from happening and convince them to get the puppers fixed. And yes, this is a new dog owner who went into it rushed so they were probably scammed into paying premium as well. I'm probably going to link this video to them, thank you.

You make a very interesting point. People who buy a car will do research, visit several dealers, try out different cars before buying one. But when it comes to dogs, an actual living breathing animal with feelings, they pick the first one they see without thinking and regretting it afterwards. Even with a lot of information and countless campaigns warning about these practices there are still too many puppy mills who sell thousands of dogs every year.

We constantly talk about how many times a week people ask if they are Doodles, and it's hard not to shout "No, these are 1000 year old breeds" because it makes you seem kind of snobby, but in reality I paid a lot less for my Portie than some people pay for a Doodle from a farm in nowhere land with no papers. no support, no health testing. As someone below said, if you want a non/low shedding dog that is smart, great with families and easily trained, get a Poodle, a Portie, or a Barbet. They are individuals, and I can guarantee you not all of them are dog friendly, good with kids, low energy, etc like people claim. We have some poodle mixes with temperament issues and who cannot be with other dogs and are therefore singled to have individual play time. Most of them aren’t people aggressive, but they can be neurotic and a handful because mixing two high drive and energy breeds and expecting them to always end up as couch potatoes is such a dangerous mindset. TDLR, they can be good dogs but the breeding and owning practices of them is kind of screwed.

I wish that people would stop assuming poodles are "fancy" dogs. You don't have to have a poodle in a show cut if you don't want to. You can let the fur grow longer or keep it all short, and pompoms are optional. My boy has never had pompoms because I don't like them, and they would be a problem when we're out in the snow. When I let him get a bit fluffier in the winter, everyone assumes he's a Goldendoodle because he doesn't have the poodle style shaved face. Standard poodles are working dogs and therefore have a lot of energy which isn't perfect for everyone, but they're also very smart, sweet, and easy to train. They're also significantly easier to groom as they have a much more consistent coat than doodles.

Doodles are the bain of many dog professionals. Including myself, a trainer. 50 to 70% of my clients have been doodles in the last 5 years of business. Of the multi-dozens I've trained I only actually liked the temperament/behavior of two individuals. They are crazy upkeep coat wise, crazy smart but rarely 'easy' to train. That is they learn things quickly, but maintaining training is a huge struggle for nearly all my clients as doodles seem to be the worst counter surfers, destructive, and selective hearing dogs of any larger group of dogs I've ever trained. They are super intelligent and extremely reluctant to let go of their own agendas over their owners wishes. In my area, greater Seattle Washington, most doodles also come with a healthy dose of anxiety and the fear based behaviors that come with genetic anxiety. I'm also including all the groomers, veterinarians, trainers, and dog sitters I know personally in my assessment. I know for a fact my experiences with doodles are excessively common. It's very unfortunate.

I actually have a pure bred standard poodle who is 11 yrs old and he's the perfect big boi. We got him from a professional breeder who'd also train the dogs perfectly. We have all his papers and records. He's super sweet and gentle. The only problem with him is a chronic ear infection that he's had for years and we're managing it. The infection itself isnt genetic, its from a bowl of water, we let his hair on his ears get long and he got water in his ears, creating the infection. Long story short: it's okay to have a doodle or poodle, if you know and trust the breeder you get it from. There are some very good breeders, but there are even more bad ones. I'm also allergic to dogs, I have a maltipoo and thankfully I don't have any problems. However, it might be different for other people and dogs so if you decide on a dog, you could visit the breeder first and let your boyfriend spend some time with the dogs to make sure he doesn't have a reaction (that's what I did before I got my dog).

When I worked at a vet clinic we had someone bring in a petco puppy (already about twenty red flags) that they'd just purchased. It was a little brown doodle that could still be held in one hand. Since it was a petco puppy and since I'm in ohio, we know for sure that it was bread by the Amish in a puppymill. The owners had had it for about two days, and it had already gotten parvo. When I was scanning their paperwork, I saw the price they paid for it. $5000. They'd set up a payment plan for this dog through Petco and were paying a couple hundred a month, and would be for several years. For a sick, poorly bred dog that already had parvo and was going to develop who knew what kinds of issues down the line.

If their baby doesn't like something they keep it away from him instead of desensitizing... All advice falls on deaf ears.

We have a labradoodle. I grew up with dogs but my husband and one of my kids have allergies. We got on a waitlist for a labradoodle before COVID from a lady who was a registered poodle breeder for decades. It took us years to get to the front of the list and we had to wait a couple of more litters because my husband had allergic reactions to all of the first couple of litters. He's a year old now and very healthy. Our vet's office loves him and have seen a few other dogs from the same breeder that are healthy with good temperaments. Our first time at the groomer we got a high quote but he cut the price in half after working with him. He said they'd had a lot of problems with labradoodles but he was wonderfully well behaved. When we needed to send him to a kennel overnight at a doggy daycare/resort, they required a couple of meet and greets before they accepted him. I was very nervous because he hadn't spent a lot of time around other dogs, just humans and he didn't go to puppy school (COVID overfilled the classes around here). He was amazing! They had camera's so we could see how he was doing and he so well behaved and they've welcomed back any time. We discussed getting a dog for 10 years before we settled on a breeder and got on the waitlist. We needed a big yard first, at least one person home with our dog every day and a dog who didn't trigger allergies. Our breeder went to great pains to make sure that we were good candidates to adopt. He surpassed our expectations and he's a wonderful, smart, laid back dog who fits perfectly into our family. I think people are being wayyy too harsh on the mix. That some shitty breeders exist doesn't mean the mix is bad.

She rescued him off the street as a puppy from a poor woman trying to get rid of the puppies, and had no former knowledge of taking care of dogs. My fiancee’s doodle gets hate from people sometimes. Still very affordable and has been a dream to take care of. He sits on poodle behavior with irish golden fur. Very wavy. I’ve had shepherds through my life and it’s really easy teaching such an intelligent doodle when they don’t have such a job function. We supported our breeder because we were able to spend months with their family and my Fiancee’s brother also bought from them. People still look at us like we are doing an injustice in not buying a shelter dog but some breeders are very good. I spoke to a breeder who wanted to find the right dog to match our family, over just saying "whichever one u think is cute" or some thing. Meanwhile someone in my family has a breeder (of large, loud, hard to train working dogs) who literally called her up to see if she wanted to buy more dogs... Be very very very very wary and picky if you decide to go with a breeder, and try to find one who works with / donates to rescues and shelters. If you have to go for breeder over adoption for whatever reason, you should always find a breeder who has a passion for the breed, cares more about health than show-standards, and one that's well reputed, does health testing, and cares about where their puppies end up.

@@Norgar756 You seriously cannot bring wolves into this. Wolves are not domesticated. Period. What are domesticated are dogs. Wolves only live on average of 6 to 8 years in the wild, I'm not sure how this is any longer than the average of a dog? Even in captivity the maximum lifespan observed in a wolf in captivity is only 19 years and the average being between 8-14 years. I personally know several dogs who are between 15 and 22 years old and still thriving and *gasp* two of them are Shih Tzu's from a breeder! Without breeders we would not have breeds or dogs with predictable temperaments. If you enjoy doodles good for you I'm happy you found a breed category you love, I personally love herding breeds. There is no need to be rude about someone's choice not to get a specific breed or whether or not to support a rescue or a breeder to obtain the breed they are looking for. Breeding dogs gives us predictability; there are no two dogs from a rescue that are alike even if they are from the same litter or same situation. In a planned litter you are not just breeding two dogs together you are breeding the history of every single dog behind them which is why is it crucial to know the lineage to the dogs you are breeding. That lineage gives us information that is vital to many situations on where that puppy will go; show prospect, sports home, active family life, a service dog prospect, or even just a pet. Having an even tempered calm dog who is content with walks and playing in the yard is perfect for most family homes but you cannot usually find something that easily in a rescue. There is nothing wrong with adopting or shopping as long as it is responsibly.

He was quite hale and healthy until cancer took him 2 years ago, and we also only paid $300 for him. I guess we got very lucky with him because even with very limited training, he was still a sweetheart who loved other people and did know to be gentle with kids and older people, even if he was exuberant with others.
