I miss those concerts! I was 16 in 1974 and you didn't worry about a thing. If the person next to you passed you a joint, you just took a toke and passed it on. I never saw a fight at a concert, just immense amounts of talent.

I was 16 in 74 , I found the best place to sit at a concert , the end seat , I had a joint in one hand a pipe in another trying to pass . Smoking another. Seems like another life

@@deborahchesser7375 exactly, we could drive to the lake . Just about park anywhere and camp ( party ) now they have campgrounds , some alcohol prohibited 🚫. Old dirt roads now paved streets . Houses everywhere. I could drive 15 minutes and be out of the city , now 15 minutes to get half way out of the city . I don't mind getting old but I don't like watching people that you love suffer or pass on

Oh, yeah! I'd rather hang out with the stoners than drinkers any day. Stoners don't get mean & aggressive the way drinkers can. Plus, the smoke doesn't mess with my blood glucose as long as I stay away from pastries.

I'm SO glad y'all did this CLASSIC Hard Rock/Funk song!! I knew y'all would love it!! Rare Earth was a rare band indeed. Based out of Detroit MI, they were a very unique combination of Hard Rock, Funk, Soul and R&B. One of the first White Rock bands signed to Motown, and the only one with any hits (and they had several), Rare Earth sounded somewhat like other bands of their time but always had a very uniquely Funk-infused sound that none of their contemporaries ever had. That's what made them so unique. As you could tell, they were mainly percussive-driven. They were also guitar-driven, but secondarily. The drums/percussion always took front and center stage with them. As I mentioned above, they had several hits, this being their second biggest (#7). Their all-time biggest hit was a great cover of The Temptations' "Get Ready" (#4). They also did a mega-epic 11-minute cover version of The Temptations' "(I Know) I'm Losing You," soon after the British Rock band The Faces (featuring Rod Stewart) did their own amazing cover of it in 1971. Plagued by personnel problems and a dizzying number of lineup changes beginning in 1975, Rare Earth somehow stayed together and turned into more of a Disco band in 1977-78. They actually somehow managed to technically stay around all the way up until 2021(!), when the last original member of the band died. Rare Earth was a rare breed indeed.

This was back when California jam was coming once a summer. They put it on for four or five summers and then it just kind of dwindled out. It's a shame about the time I move there they stopped doing it! Peace and love!

You should listen to Rare Earth's song (I Know) I'm Losing You, the 11 minute version. It is a solid banger! It has great organ playing in it, Jamel!! The song was originally performed by the Temptations, but the Rare Earth version charted a little better.

"Celebrate" and "I Know I'm Losing You" were my top 2 favorites (link below)! Thanks for this great reaction, Jamel! ✌💙✌ I Know I'm Losing You - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJhoi5tekpjIdok.html

Thanks for that reaction! Great insight about how people experienced a huge outdoor concert like that back in the day. And, have to take time to comment on Peter Rivera who is considered to be one of the premier singers/drummers of all time. He was the voice of all the Rare Earth hits as well as the man behind the drums. His passion for music and unsurpassed talent earn him standing ovations wherever he played. He was born and raised in Detroit. His father worked in a factory while his Mother stayed home. How interesting that when he was 9, a music store salesmen came to the house and sold his folks on a 30 music lesson package on the drums. Peter played at the age early of 5 with spoons to a record his dad gave him, as far as I know, he had no other musical experience. For years Peter practiced his drumming on an old beat-up snare drum that he got for Christmas to the sounds of a record player, learning tempo and rhythm. After saving his money from working 2 paper routes, Peter bought a set of gold sparkle drums. This was the start of a long and successful career behind the drums.

I’ve never seen this video. But I’m a big Rare Earth fan. You’re not going to believe this but I saw them on their first tour in DC in 1970 at a nightclub in the hood that had a dance floor and there was no more than a hundred people there. So after seeing the video with all those people it’s hard to believe they performed in such a small venue. Do yourself a favor and listen to the 21 minute version of Get Ready. We use to dance to it all the way through. I know I play it at least once a month for the last 53 years. Also check them out on Tobacco Road. Very soulful.
