A historically significant weapon in every way , the first model AK-47 ( also known as type one AK-47) is particularly unique in its extreme rarity in comparison to later models. Lessons learned in the manufacture of this version led to the successful fielding of the AKM and AK-74; both of which use stamped sheet metal receivers similar to the first model.

@@galaxybrain97 ..... the original commenter was talking about the ak-46/ak47 pre production prototype in the video. as for your nomenclature concerns, stamped AKMs are just improvements of the type-1 AK-47. there exists milled as well as stamped AK-47s, with the milled variants serving as interim for the improved AK-47, officially called AKM. also, AK-47s *were* largly manufactured. 75 million, according to the source that you use yourself.

Dear Vickers, there's no question in Russia that the creation of the AK was very influenced by the StG44, that'd be insane to deny that. The thing is some people believe that the AK is nothing more than a StG44 clone, which is basically wrong since both guns are very different in the sense of design.
@KeyManDan

danoedalo Very correct, you can see soviets try to make something like an AK all through late 30s and early 40s. STG supplied the inspiration needed. Hugo working for Soviets also helped making AK... i na sense he was helping to automate weapon production, in that way he helped make many Russian arms. He had no impact on the development though.

BS. Nobody says that AK is a clone of STG. What people rightfully say is that AK was designed by POW Hugo Schmeisser, who used his STG as a base and just improved it. Comrade Kalashnikov was just his boss, put in his position by the Communist party. Kalashnikov had no education or talent to really design that 'gadget'. He was just a warden with a whip over Herr Schmeisser. Kalashnikov had not designed ANYTHING before or ANYTHING after AK. Because, unfortunately for him, there were no more Schmeissers around.

The Fedorov uses the same 6.5 cartridge used in the Japanese Type 38 Arisaka (a full-length bolt-action rifle) and is definitely too big to be considered intermediate. Calling the Fedorov an assault rifle by that logic is almost like calling the Type 96 lmg an assault rifle. Not only that, but wasn't the 6.5 cartridge at the time considered an alternative rifle round that had a flatter trajectory and not a means to bridge the gap between a pistol caliber and a rifle caliber round like the 8mm Kurz?

It would be entirely incorrect to call it an AK-46 which is why I am curious the curator of the museum would say such a thing. The story around what became the AK-47 is a bit murky to say the least! The 1946 AK-46 prototype is mechanically a very different beast to the 1947 model. They share very little design wise with the AK-46 featuring a short stroke piston, with a hinged lower receiver, non-reciprocating left side charging handle and separate safety. It wasn't that good a designing with a fair amount of similarity to the STG.44 and ultimately failed the second round of trials against the Sudaev AS-44 and Bulkin AB-46 and thrown out of the competition (Both the AB-46 and AS-44 failed as well but were allowed to go forward into the next round). With a degree of pressure from various sources the trials board allowed Kalashnikovs team to submit a revised rifle for testing. They totally redesigned the rifle to what we are now familiar and the resultant design was extremely similar to the Bulkin AB-46 with some influence from the AS-44 as well. The receiver and bolt effectively a copy of the AB-46 but beefed up with a new trigger mechanism similar to that fitted to the Garand. The combined safety/dust cover was pushed by the trials board and incorporated by the design team. The AK-47 won the final trials and the rest is history...

Brilliant stuff Mr. Vickers. Few outside the armament lovers of this world understand the true relationship between the STG44 and the AK47. One literally gave birth to the other, although lets not understate the brilliance of Kalashnikov. The man took what was already an incredible weapon (STG44) and put his unique Russian mind to work, simplified a design that was reliable, rugged and easily usable...the AK47.

LOL it seems that Larry likes repeating the "AK is based on STG" propaganda... The original Kalashnikov rifle was basically a reworked version of his own carbine. It predates the STG by a couple years. German designers were bought to USSR years after Soviets had already several assault rifle designs on the table. The actual gun the Soviets intended to go for was the AS-44. However, Sudayev died before his design could be put into production leading to new trails, after the initial ones in 1943. They got the Germans in 1945. So how the fuck did Soviets mange to already have 7 rifles on the table a year or two before that? The Germans e-mailed them the blueprints? AK has nothing to do with the German engineers for the simple fact of the rifle's history PRE-DATING the arrival of the German weapons experts BY SEVERAL YEARS. The things they worked on were primarily associated with the manufacturing process itself. Which is why they were in Tula (manufacturing plant), where as Kalashnikov and his team worked in Kavrov. What we today know as AK-47 is the result of a Kalashnikov/Zaicev rework of the previous rejected Kalashnikov rifle, which was merely one of many over a span of years.

Your argument doesn't follow its premise because the AK-47 and the AS-44 come from two different engineers, and regardless of the fact of them having several rifles on the table prior or during the onset of WWII, Kalashnikov admits openly that both StG-44 and M1 Garand designed heavily influenced his rifle design.

No the only things that the STG has in common with the AK is a detachable magazine with a intermediate cartridge and a pistol grip, like it's typical for any assault rifle to have. If you even compare the insides of those two they are completely different in terms of operation. Even Kalashnikov mentions that the operating system of a Garand inspired him more for the AK than any other weapon. It is funny to me that people still want to associate the AK with the STG or being influenced by Hugo Schmeisser, who only met Kalashnikov twice in passing, but it is not weird since some people still believe the earth is flat.

The Ak was based on the SVT series rifle with its multi lug bolt. The only thing the Stg and the AK share is a full piston. The AK has a rotating bolt the Stg a tilting one. In fact the AK is just like an upside down M1 Garand. It shares more with it than it does with the Stg.
@csm5040
@csm5040 Жыл бұрын
Indeed. The AK was only developed based on the idea of an intermediate-powered assault rifle like the Stg 44, not on the mechanics of it. What most people don't know is that it wasn't the Stg 44 itself that made the Soviets consider making their own intermediate cartridge, but the Mkb 42(H), the predecessor of the Stg 44.

This being a ''machine gun'' as you state is simply not true, lets look at a lmg from that time, the Chauchat, has double the weight 1/5 more in length, has an actual thick barrel , as a lmg is supposed to have. Those thigs aside it still was used in its time as an assault rifle in some instances against the hun. This gun's intentions whatever they are, don't make the gun what it is. I bet because you see the wooden furniture and declare this a ''whatever but an a assault rifle'', but if you get technical and you look at the modern specifications for a assault rifle, this would fit that role perfectly, and this is the first assault rifle in history. It even has a foregrip, very ahead of its time, very good design. Fedorov made history with this creation.

Design wise AR15 and STG are more similar than AK and STG. And its not like the STG didnt inspire EVERYONE to adapt such weapons. Russians were the first ones to do it. AK was not made after the STG. Russians had been working on assault rifle type weapons ever since the early years of WW2, at least. There are at least 7 known finished designs (and as many as 16 proposed), including bullpups, by 1944. AK was the last one to the race. For some inexplicable reason western propaganda tries to make as if Kalashnikov just made the AK after seeing the STG. False. Russians had made assault rifle style weapons (not called assault rifles then) years before the STG-44 come to the front. The number and variety of their designs also make any STG link impossible.

***** I suggest you educate yourself. Kalashnikov's rifle wasnt even in the first trails although he had designed one (basing it off his own carbine). AK-47 is actually a redesign of a Kalashnikovs rifle by Zaicev. The original Kalashnikov designs were rather different from what we all know today as AK, it was considerably more complex.

And those of us who slobber on ourselves, call it a type 1 AK-47. There were 3 versions of the original AK. Type 3 ended in ‘59 I think. Then the AKM which most have today. Avtomat Kalashnikova Modified. Either way you slice them, they all kick ass. They type 3 with a milled receiver were badass looking rifles. I am sick that I had to sell both of my type 3’s when I lost my job. One Hungarian and one Polish, along with almost 25 more. The strangest feature of the type 1 to me was the pistol grip. It was two pieces of wood sandwiched over a metal tab coming from the receiver. If I got in the basement of that museum/archive, I would not come out for days. Then I would be a lot heavier. 😂

russian weapons r priceless, but was designed to work. And even in 4000 AD, when the US forces will use blasters to fight against aliens, Russian old weapons will do the same work for which it was created.

So whats the deal with the Federov, why wasn't it produced/used more?
@user-bn1zd3us5l
@user-bn1zd3us5l 8 жыл бұрын
+DavidAkhter It was expencive in production, while the Fedorov's facility was very small, only up to 17 people worked there, also it had it's unique cartridge based in 6,5mm Arisaka low power rifle round, which also had to be produced by the facility. Some say, that there was many jamming issues with this gun, but it's very likely to be false, cause the gun was adopted in Russian/Soviet army, which has and always had very strict rules concerning gun reliability, also this gun was used by Soviet special forces both during the "Winter War" with Finland in 1939, in extreme winter conditions and WWII. Also Fedorov was assigned to make new mashinegun and semiauto and automatic rifles based on this design, some of which were adopted (tank mashinegun for T-18 tank for example). Also one of the first AK prototype has very similar bolt configuration with Fedorov, so it's most likely was inspired by it.

The fact is everything has had a ''first time'' predecessor to build on. Edison, Tesla, Bell, Jobs, Gates, Franklin, Ford, Morse all had something to work with, and then to perfect on.

What they mean is the idea of the assault rifle and the intermediate cartridge was what not only the Soviets copied but everyone. However from what I know, the 7.62 x 39mm cartridge was developed shortly after the Soviets saw action against the MP44 and by 1945 they managed to develop the SKS, a working system that would fire that cartridge.

Actually 7.62x39 already exist in 1943 when they started to develop new amunitions and weapons for infrantry to replace 7.62x54R. The idea of 7.62x39 is replace heavy rifle 7.62x54 with new rounds fit with combat less than thousand meters and go after that is design new weapons come along wit new rounds to apply for whole squad including fully auto rifle ( replace avs 36 ) squad automatic weapons to replace dp machinegun ( which is rpd ) and semi rifle to replace svt40 ( sks ) amd carbine bolt action to replace mosin nagant but never go further than prototype. So rpd was come out first in 1944 but its too late to join ww2 since mass productions running up late in 1944. Sks come after that which is further deverlop from avs 36, And production started in 1945. Ak was develop in 1944, base on avs 36 and lose the first trial so kalashnikov was insprited some parts from sks and come with later model in 1946 and start mass productions in 1947 With the name AK. There's no such thing call ak47. Later developed new version of it including aks and akm

+Unit987654321 They developed the 7.62X39mm and some other intermediate round designs in 1943, after they got hands on MKb-42, which was before STG-44 was developed.

I respect Larry Vickers so much and I love everything he puts into his work but if a Russian Museum Curator says that is an Ak46 then I think that he should be considered a primary source for the information surrounding it. Larry is right that it's preproduction but whatever... sweet gun and sweet video thanks Larry!

The 6.5x50mm is not an intermediate cartridge. It is a full sized rifle cartridge also used in the Arisaka bolt action rifle. So the Fedorov is a battle rifle, not a assault rifle.

+John Connor Intermediate power of cartridge, comparing with 7.62/7.7/7.92 rounds in other rifles, that were standart back then. Also the rifle's configuration: it's shorter, then standart automatic rifle, while has a vertical grip for recoil control in close distances figting - this is an assualt configuration, so it is technically and practically an assualt rifle.

It's intersting seeing that the dust cover on that AK wasn't a perfect fit, and had the charging handle hit it with each shot. I wonder if that was one of the issues they had with stamped guns early on. I imagine a poorly enough fitting dust cover could prevent reliable cycling
