I feel this is one of the best setups I've done and I really glad how it's turning out. In this video I go into detail about how I created this tank and how I maintain it. My favourite types of aquarium are big planted tanks with lots of little fish and this tank is exactly that. I class the fish as rare because they are ones I don't usually see in fish shops near me. Obviously this will be different depending on where you are in the world. Hope you enjoy 🙂

Hello I don’t own any fish yet . I’m wondering as I’m watching one of your feeding videos on my tv right now . I notice you have lots of plants . Are your lights uv lights to help the plants grow or are they just normal lights . I’m looking for a video about how to set up a tank for little guppies or tetras But with plants . I visited my local store and the staff member just didn’t seem to have a clue . Hoping to learn lots from your channel .

If you have a shrimp crew in your planted tanks, you can avoid needing to keep adding fertilizer by boiling the trimmings of your plants and putting them back in the tank. After being boiled, they'll sink and the shrimp will eat them, and convert them into all natural plant fertilizer, giving you back all that iron and potassium.

@MDFishTanks
@MDFishTanks 2 жыл бұрын
yeah ideally you would. but this filter has so little media in it, its not really doing a lot in terms of beneficial bacterial. The whole substrate system, hardscape and plants is where the magic happens. I use these filters to push the water around to be honest.
@GameChanger-qi1uo
@GameChanger-qi1uo 2 жыл бұрын
And to be honest, I’ve never rinsed out my filter pads in Aqarium water, and I’m talking decades. There is usually not enough Chlorine in the water to kill the bacteria in a 2-3 minute wash. Especially if you happen to have a water purifier hooked up. That’ll definitely take the Chlorine out.
@onlywei
@onlywei 2 жыл бұрын
Prime time aquatics did a scientific video on how long it takes for chlorine to kill bacteria. Basically, it takes hours. 10 seconds of rinsing is not going to have any significant effect on your bacteria.

Love the content your making and your tanks, so beautiful. But the filter thing, why have the fine finter first, it's better to have large smaller and fine sponge so it takes up all partials and not that everything get stuck in the first layer and stops the circulation. (but that's my way of doing it, not saying it's wrong) most do it like you do because the company making filter flosspads want to keep selling a lot of it. Any way love your work, keep up the good stuff and most importantly enjoy it.

MD I think it is a toss up between you being a aquatic plant channel as well as an aquascaping channel. Your plants thrive as well as your fish if not more. With all the trimming and propagation do you even need to buy new plants at this point? LOL. It would be great to see you try some other plants that you have never had before since you have a green thumb when it comes to the most commonly used types, just to see how that works out. For a non Co2 tank channel, you success with planted tanks is next level!

So I've been rewatching some of your videos lately and I've learned two big things: it doesn't really matter what type/brand/cost of lighting you use (plants don't care), the substrate doesn't really matter either..... but that brings me to wood. That's the one thing I'm still left wondering about. I searched your channel for videos on just wood and couldn't find any. Do you have an equal solution to the wood topic that you have for substrate and lighting? The wood seems to be the most confusing and costly aspect to me (other than the tank itself). It seems like finding your own hardwood in the wild is impossible or risky. Which leaves buying nice looking show pieces from pet stores but they're crazy expensive. Solutions??? Maybe garden centers have some for cheaper or something.

I saw you rinsed your sponges in tap water. Unless your tap comes from a well, I HIGHLY suggest people rinse their sponges in tank water. If there is chlorine in your tap water, rinsing your sponges in it would kill the biological filtration that should occur in the sponges.

he does not use the filter for biological filtration just flow, his biological filtration is the plants, as can be seen in other setups where he has no filtration at all. but yeah watching someone wash out with tap water makes your toes curl lol

If increasing flow is your goal, you should also clean the impeller and the impeller shaft.

Do you think it would be possible to transfer bba from one tank to another by using the bio media to cycle a new tank? I have 3 tanks set up this way with the pebbles and aqua soil in bags, capped in sand. No ferts, no co2, lightly stocked. One is over a year old and has bba. One is 9 months old and is just a treat, no algae, it just ticks along. Other than the diatom stage, it has just been solid. My newest, is about 4 months old, a Waterbox rimless and it has bba. I know there are a lot of variables here. They were all basically set up the same way, same tap water, hob's, lights, plants (I have a very limited selection and budget). Why my oldest tank has bba, I don't sweat to much, the fish are healthy and are over a year old and no losses. The Waterbox, I saved for months to get. The fish are healthy and thriving. I just was thinking, what, why? The one thing that dawned on me was I used the bio media from the oldest tank to cycle the newest. I think this might be a stretch, just tying to put the pieces together.
