Neolithic tombs with well-preserved human skeletons are extremely rare. However, in recent months, archaeologists discovered a passage grave in Orkney, Scotland with eight relatively intact individuals. In this video I talk about this find, as well as, the discoveries of an ancient Egyptian cemetery, an Aztec snake sculpture, a Bronze Age royal hall in Germany and a Bronze Age jewellery set in Switzerland. I also discuss a project to search for lost prehistoric settlements under the North and Baltic Seas.

Another clear and concise presentation. Thank you, Laura. New background: stairwell with artsy shadow angles. And I miss your two plants. We’ve watched them grow up, and I was about to name them. Are you based in Malta? Any connection between water collection and cartruts. Water must be a scarce commodity on those islands where they appear. But no cisterns or retentions, so; oh well. I’ll go back and watch M H reruns. Be well, all,

The Orkney grave makes me wonder of other graves with arranged bodies. I have read somewhere of this being done in other cultures. Another thing to look up, keeps me busy. The find in a carrot field inspires me to buy a metal detector, frost is always pushing something to the surface in my area. Thank you for your tireless work Laura.

Hello Laura! I just missed the premiere chat. All brilliant stories, but Orkney stands out for me. (I think Floyd said the same.) The bones are still very easily identified which is extremely lucky as the tomb was disturbed in the past. They do look somewhat crumbly. Do you think that is just the age or from the land being cultivated? I am also very partial to the Aztec snake sculpture. 😅 Thank you so much for your videos.

If the Bronze Age hall in Germany had a central fireplace, it can't really have been multi-storey, can it? As far as I know, smoke escaped via the roof, there were no chimneys. At best, a partially retracted intermediate floor would be conceivable.

A bit of foundation remains. I don’t understand how you could tell from that photo that there was no chimney.
@karenmelzer8878
@karenmelzer8878 8 ай бұрын
@@docinparadise No chimney stones have been found in Bronze Age houses: a chimney would have had to be made of stone, the remains of which would have been found in at least some cases. I think wooden chimneys are unlikely because of the risk of fire. As no roof shingles have been found either, archaeologists assume that the roofs were covered with thatch, through which the smoke would then escape (this would also preserve the roof, as pests would die in the smoke). And without a chimney, storeys make no sense, because the smoke would be drawn into the upper storeys. The height of the house is determined by its width, as thatched roofs need a steep pitch to be watertight. Strictly speaking, you can't tell from the remains in the ground how high the building was, can you? But perhaps there was a chimney in this case: there are just no traces of it.

@@karenmelzer8878slight tangent here, but I liked on the NW coast of Scotland many years ago. There were still some "black houses" ie drystone buildings, thatched with heather. They also had no chimneys. The smoke from the open hearth drifted up through the thatch. Your comment brought back happy memories from the early 1970's!

What then is the answer? With all do respect, why should we consign such finds to the undisclosed dark ages of our historical past? In perpetual blissful ignorance? Shovel over such cherished finds the as Tollund Man, Sutton Hoo, Skara Brae, Must Farm, even the Mary Rose come to that, consigning them to eternal anonymity, leaving us in blissful ignorance of our long and far-reaching roots? The ancient Egyptians had a saying: "To speak of the dead is to make them live again." Robin Witting

@@robinwitting2023They will use the for research to write academic papers that very few people will read. Then they will place the sources in cardboard boxes and store them in the bowels of some institution for decades. Few, if any, academics will revisit these "sources" again. 75 a 100 years or maybe longer, from now, someone will have a clear up to make space for other boxes and they will "disappear." These are or were people, they should be studied in situ and given the dignity that was intended for them by the people who placed them there. If they have to be removed then as soon as what ever "research" is done, they should be reinterred in accordance with the burial practices that were used when they were originally placed there. I just think there is no time limit to respecting the resting places of the dead.
