Robert and Jason - Thank you both for this wonderful video! Back in 1988, I was lead guitarist for band named "Redline". My band was at S.I.R. Studios in Hollywood, writing and rehearsing songs for an RCA demo. Next door, in the bigger studio, Stryper were filming a new video. Robert had been listening to my band and invited us over to chat and watch the filming of their video. The stage set was so cool. The floor was rigged with water, which produced great reflections. There was a clear, plexiglass grand piano, cymbals were hanging from chains in the rafters. Robert was such a cool, laid back guy. Although he and his band were busy, he took time in between filming, to talk about music, the music business, and life. Robert made an impact on me that day. It is now a cherished memory. I've met, and talked with Robert (and other Stryper members) on a few other occasions, they were always nice. Robert, if you read this, Thank You for talking with me, for being such a cool, down to earth guy, and for taking the time all those years ago. -David

Wow, what a surprise. Always loved his drumming and to start off the interview flattering Jason is above and beyond a great guy. I caught a stick (and bible) in San Diego in the late 80s and Stryper's music, on cassette, kept me company on many tough days as a youngster, even though I'm traditionally religious. Awesome interview and thanks for posting! Stryper is my favorite Christian Oriented bands and they were one of the pioneering Christian Hard Rock/Metal Bands. Christian Hard Rock/Metal started in the 70s and there were only a few bands and then in the mid 80s that all changed as more bands started.

Stryper is one of the greatest Bands of All time bar none ask bands that tour with thenn I wish oz and Robert would get there's respect there are two legends

In the 80's I was a teenager. stryper was my church. I listened Stryper every Sunday morning. A teacher of mine said if you like Stryper they are Christien and like and you love it's your way to close to Jesus. Nothing wrong with that. Awesome drummer... Saw him on the Final Battle tour in Biloxi,Ms. and In God We Trust tour back in the day in New Orleans,La. Really great musician.

I was into bands like Motörhead, slayer, Iron Maiden, UK punk, NYC hardcore etc…and always heard about Stryper. First time I heard them was “Honestly”. In my ignorance, I chalked their image and that song to being all they’re about. I totally blew them off. Figured they were wimpy and for those women rock fans from the 80s. Years later…I heard a song come on the radio (Do Unto Others) and I had no idea who it was. I immediately had a look of shock on my face because it’s rare these days you hear some ‘new’ metal that sounds like the old classic stuff. I turned it up loud! Afterwards when they announced who it was, I was totally floored. When they said Stryper, I was like there’s no way possible. This isn’t the Stryper I first heard years ago. Stryper has since become my TOP band that I can’t get enough of, right alongside my love for King’s X. Even more important than all of that, hearing that Stryper song was like a total godsend. I remember that day and time frame life wasn’t going so well and I was becoming bitter and angry. The message from that song really changed me and I’ll always be grateful to Robert and Stryper for getting me back on track, getting me back into my faith, etc. Stryper should know that the messages in their songs do not fall on deaf ears and they’re changing lives in a positive manner! I know Stryper has always caught flak from all sides and that’s truly unfortunate. Too Christian to be metal, too metal to be Christian…the truth is, from a fan’s perspective, is this has created a following of Stryper that nobody would ever believe. Christian’s, atheists, Satanists, non believers, etc have all become hardcore fans of the band. I’ve read many times even for people that don’t care much for their message, they respect them to the max because Stryper has NEVER tried to hide who they are or what they’re about. Many other bands would rather change their image or hide their beliefs, Stryper has never done this and it has garnered a MASSIVE amount of respect. One last thing in regards to them catching flak…a lot of those evangelists and ‘Christian’ ripping Stryper…I dare even say Stryper has reached more people and helped save more souls than these people ever have. Sitting in your congregation at the church and waiting for others to come to you does absolutely nothing. You’re already sitting among your likeminded crowd. Stryper took the lord’s message to those in the night clubs, the concert halls, the filthy venues, etc. these would be people would have NEVER stepped foot into a church and would have never known the lord’s word otherwise. Taking the message to those who need it most. Thank you for this interview, it was really great and enjoyable!

Stryper should’ve had a Marvel comic at the height of their popularity in the late 80’s where they’re angelic super heroes who battle a Dr. Doom-like version of Satan. When I was a kid, I saw the video for Calling On You. I was hooked. The melodic energy was something the other "Hair Bands" couldn't ever duplicate. Similar to Metalica, I went back and bought their catalog that I didn't ever knew existed. I then would pick up every cassette single that came out, from Winter Wonderland to Honestly. I played In God We Trust until the tape broke. I took a ton of junk from my metal head friends in school, because I wore Stryper shirts. Being from Orange County myself, I guess I just related to what they were doing. If you listen to the album Soldiers Under Command, it's as heavy as anything else in those days. They took a huge risk with the Christian angle, but they stuck with it, and believed in it. Robert is a drummer that matters, and is truly part of their sound. You know it's Robert Sweet when you hear it. Few drummers are part of the sound that can't be replaced. Stryper is awesome, always have been.

Robert influence me in my drumming. Been a fave since Soldiers under Command. Those guys see to be soo much cool. Hope I'll see them before they stop. To bad Tim is not in the band anymore

What an amazing drummer and cool guy. Robert has been an inspiration to me as a drummer since I was in freshman year of high school in the 80's. He has such energy, timing and power as a drummer. He is a drumming "machine", in the best way. I had the pleasure to see Stryper from front row on the "To Hell With the Devil" tour. I caught a pick from Michael and my cousin caught a bible. On the 30th anniversay of "Too Hell With The Devil", I saw them again and for a second time caught another guitar pick from Michael. It was like the pick of destiny from the Jack Black movie! Amazing. What a great band they have always been! Class act. I even have a couple settings on my electronic drums where I try to emulate his sound on "Too Hell With The Devil" that I call "Stryped".
