DO NOT tell me how you would unhook or yank the power cables off I needed a 13mm to disconnect them, that wasn't a option. I was trying to tap on the solenoid to get it to stop.
THIS TRUCK FAILED TO START BECAUSE OF WEAK BATTERIES, the starter solenoid had stuck causing the starter to keep running, not the relay under the hood, but the SOLENOID MOUNTED DIRECTLY on the starter that draws unfused power from both batteries (there is no fuse that can stop this)! Sure it's not a true runaway, but the engine was spinning without me being able to stop it, be careful if this happens to you it can cause a fire.
If you want to see a good -6F cold start check out www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS1Vv... to see a well maintained powerstroke.
After letting my 97 F350 7.3 PowerStroke Diesel sit for a week I go out to start it up after it being 15 degrees the night before. Block heater wasn't plugged in.
I have done a complete tear down of this engine, check it out at
kzfaq.info?list...
In April 2013 I just put a new starter solenoid on it, and I will be taking it back to Advanced Auto Parts to get a new one as it is CLEARLY defective, it's done this several other times but never for more than 1-3 seconds and it usually only did it when I would shut the truck off. Crazy.
This same week I was blessed enough to have found 96 F350 7.3 from the original owner that is was in much better shape just in need of a efuel system.

Edwardo Snowdeno happened to me about 2 years ago. Pretty alarming! The only way to stop it was disconnecting the battery, which is scary enough on its own; with the starter chugging away, it's drawing a LOT of amps, so there's a nice arc when you pull the terminal!

I had this happen to my 6.2 back in high school. My glow plugs were shot and after the third crank, the starter stuck. It took me 3 min to run in the house and find a wrench to unhook the battery. But by then the battery's were dead and the starter had overheated.Good glow plugs and a reliable battery are key to starting an old diesel in the winter... Using the block heater isn't a bad idea either!... Ha Ha!

+michael smith Been there done that. My 6.5 had the same problem. Every now and then the starter would stick on. Luckily the first two times I had a crescent wrench in the cab. After that I kept the battery terminals loose enough I could wiggle and pull them off to kill it. Happened 5 times till I sold it.

I had a 2002 F450 with the 7.3 PowerStroke. She was a wonderful truck and that engine ran 330,000 miles before the company I worked for traded it in. It got hard to start on cold weather, and I found a solenoid bad for the glowplugs. In all that milage the only significant repairs were one lube oil pump, injectors, and oil cooler gaskets. Never once let me down. Any small problems I made it home with the truck and was able to fix in my garage.

Love the stuck solenoid problem. I work at a jeep CJ restoration shop and have to occasionally do the "solenoid shuffle" when the fender solenoid sticks from cranking with a low battery. Running to open the hood and hit the thing with any hard object readily available or take the battery cable loose. We took in a Scrambler that burned up from it. Guy didn't know what to do and watched it go up in flames. Good times.

My dad worked at Yingling Chevrolet in Wichita, KS back in 1968 when it burned down. The fire chief and a few of his men died in that fire, in fact, there were several new fire regulations and training courses that came from that disaster that are still taught around the country to this day. My dad told me that somebody had been working on a truck during the day and it was a manual and in gear, somewhere along the line there was a small wrench that was teetering on the edge of the motor and somehow during the night, it fell off and landed in between the starter and the block and it caused the starter to engage. The truck rolled across the shop floor and crashed into the wall and then proceeded to keep cranking while the tires were spinning until it finally caught fire. Crazy freak accident and ended up taking some lives. I want to say it was on Christmas Eve as well. I'll have to look it up again and refresh my memory. Thanks for posting.

It stopped on it's own thankfully, if I'd had my tools then I would have gotten it stopped a little faster. I drive a 2000 F350 with almost half a million miles and man the battery cables look ugly to say the best, the batteries took a dump on it and i needed just one more start out of it and I was so worried this would happen on it LOL. Thanks buddy, take care.

Had this issue when we fired up a 351W on a running stand. Used the original solenoid to the truck, turned over many times no problem, but the day we went to fire it, solenoid stuck and kept the starter going after I turned the key off. Fortunately it was properly wired so when the key was off, no ignition was powered. Ended up pulling the power wire of the battery.

Low voltage across the start solenoid contacts will generate an arc that starts melting the contact face.over time they get worse just like ign points.the end result is stuck or melted together copper contacts, especially on diesel motors.500 to 600 cca? On a cold start.plus there is the glow plugs pulling batt voltage down.alternator faults can be a big problem.sulfated batts.parasitic current draw with key off.

this thing reminds me of the 8V-92 2 stroke detroit in my RV hauler truck ,,,no such thing as a quick start in cold weather ,,if it isn't plugged in likely as not it won't start at -6F without a LOT of cranking ,,it's a case of crank it till it starts cause it will eventually start you won't burn up the starter ,,likely you'll melt a cable ,, and in my truck you'll never run the batteries down cause i have an APU/generator capable of supplying 600+amps continuous to the batteries ,,and also supplies power to the engine heater , as well as warms the coolant directly

I have a 1997 F250 PWS with 334,000 miles. It has a manual transmission. Were my starter to runaway, I like to think that I could just let the clutch out, and the clutch switch would disengage the starter (I'd hope, but this never happened to me). So with an automatic transmission, would putting the transmission into gear cause the neutral safety switch to disengage the starter? Asking for future reference... Thanks in advance.

I owned a Chevy 6.5 at 157k miles the heads were done and it wouldn't restart after it was hot, what junk, and those were better than the 6.2s LOL, what non existent power, my land rover with a 4.0 was putting out more torque. Had this happen to a friend of mines truck. All because the battery terminals were loose. I assume the extra heat generated by the poor connection caused the solenoid to stick. ***** "Any altitude diesel is thermodynamically more efficient." At higher altitude the air is not as dense, any NON-turbo charged engine (gas or diesel) will not. the starter switch on my 88 bronco did the same thing when i tried to start it on a weak battery. the battery was too weak to crank so all it did was discharged the battery very low. disconnected the battery and main wire to the starter. charged the battery and was able to get the solenoid undone.

Those fender mounter starter relays are notorious for sticking. More so in the open position but sometimes in the closed position too. Problem becomes frequent if you get an autozone/oreillys replacement.

My 93 did the same thing... The ignition switch actuators hate cold weather and break.
