Alec Guinness did a journal/autobiographical series on the BBC prior to his death. He hated that in his storied acting history that people only cared about Star Wars, but said Peter was the best thing about his experience.

@Mekon Headed Freak Did you actually watch him say that? I ask because it seems like a strange thing to have said. I'm pretty sure they didn't share any scenes, so I can't see why they would have been on set at the same time.

If you look carefully during that scene you can see that Carrie and Peter are on the verge of flashing each other an affectionate smile. It's rather cute that even in a scene where their two characters are meant to despise each other, Peter was such a kind soul to her they couldn't quite bury that affection.

and unlike Alec Guiness he enjoyed the part and was happy he was in the film.
@SamvedIyer
@SamvedIyer Жыл бұрын
@@suave-rider In the interview with Parkinson, Alec Guinness is effusive in his praise for Star Wars. It occurs to me that it was perhaps the modern fan phenomenon to which he was not accustomed, that he came to detest, and the fact that while he had had roles aplenty to be proud of, he seemed to be remembered only for Obi-wan. As his years advanced, and he entered the sere and yellow, his views seem to be more laced with disdain; in the late 1990s, he proceeded to call the dialogues "bloody awful".
@suave-rider
@suave-rider Жыл бұрын
@@SamvedIyer he clearly was lying in the beginning to keep the public on side, but really he was too full of his own importance. Even Vincent Price loved doing anything that made people happy.
@SamvedIyer
@SamvedIyer Жыл бұрын
@@suave-rider He may have been lying, but I would not be surprised were his appreciation to emerge as genuine. As an old-school actor, he could certainly have appreciated the classic elements of Star Wars: naive, impetuous but eager to learn, young protagonist; the old, wise mentor; redemption, and suchlike. But I will agree that Peter Cushing was genuinely happy, and regretted that his character should die in the very first movie, and therefore not feature in future movies.

He didn't always look so grim. His wife, Helen Cushing, died unfortunately young and Peter was so depressed by her passing that he wanted to die too. He couldn't bring himself to commit suicide though, so he decided he would simply starve himself to death, and he refused to eat or drink anything for so long that he really did almost die. Friends and family finally convinced him to start eating again, and he did, but the damage was already done to his body, and so he looked very gaunt and macabre after that.

A really funny excerpt from 'Peter Cushing - A one way ticket to Hollywood'. I have always to laugh wien he asks what a grand moff is. The only Star Wars Film worth to watch, funny fairy tale stuff in futuristic presentation. Later all went to that superficial overblown pr-gag. There is one thing I will never understand. The Film was such a great success and Cushings part was very well received and gave the film something very special. Why he only got offered so unimportant parts in mostly forgettable movies? When the films he made after this one were choosen as the best offers, how bad must have been the other offers???
