🇹🇭 Karen Food - Hilltribe Jungle Cooking: • Huge Thai Food Tour!! ...

Huge thank you to Khun Mook for taking us on this incredible authentic Karen food adventure. She does tours in Mae Hong Son province of Thailand, contact her here: / mookshilltribecrafts
MAE HONG SON, THAILAND (แม่ฮ่องสอน) - On Day 2 of this Karen tribal food tour, Mook and Shikomo took us on a fishing and foraging hike. We started off gathering some fresh tangerines from the orchard before we set off on our trek.
We headed to the river to do some stream fishing the Karen way, with a square net fitted with a bamboo frame. It definitely takes some time and effort, but we did catch quite a few small little fish and some tadpoles as well, which we later cooked. We also gathered some wild herbs and vegetables like ferns and pea eggplants. After fishing and foraging for mountain ingredients, we headed to a rice harvesting shack on the side of the mountain to cook lunch.
For lunch they pounded up some herbs and spices along with the fish and ferns and roasted them in a bamboo pole. Additionally, one of the most unique dishes they made was a soup made with fermented soy bean, hog plums, cold water, pickled and dried mustard greens, and finally some of the grilled fish for flavoring. It was so unique and refreshing and a flavor you can never forget.
It was another day of amazing local Karen tribal food in Thailand thanks to Mook and Shikomo! There’s nothing better than foraging and fishing for food and cooking it on spot - knowing where your food comes from.
Thank you for watching and be sure to check the other videos in this series - Eating Huge Banana Tree: • Extreme Jungle Food!! ...

Mark, I am so glad you are back in Thailand. I have had 77 years of living in the USA and I know as much as I want to about pizzas and hamburgers. Yes some of them are better than others, but it is such a waist of your superb talents to describe them rather than the subtle taste of Asia. I loved today's video. Much love from East Hampton NY.

Every ingredients that, they put in to make different dishes is so similar...... specially seeing the fermanted soyabean , that little standing chilli and the green leaves 😊.... and lastly , that stuffed bamboo style of cooking....🤗 Feeling oneness and admiring you at the same....👍 Love and wishes from North East India.❤️❤️❤️

I try and explain to my friends back home the life style, but now I can share this video with them so they can see for themselves. Simple things in life hey.....sometimes mean the most.

Mark thank you so much for the videos from the Karen area there in Thailand. Totally amazing! A typical American would look around and say I’m going to starve not seeing all of the nature’s bounty around them! They are blessed with so many herbs and natural seasonings. I make a Louisiana catfish (stew) Courtbouillion. I don’t use the heads and I thought those ladies would think that would be wasteful😂😂😂 I wish more people knew how to forage and eat locally, it’s a dying art in many places. Again thank you for these videos and look forward to more of this series and location.

They’re so kind, hardworking and sweet and I got a chance to try many Karen food every time they cooked and YES! Full of fragrance from herbs, so comforting. Mae Hong Son is a very very beautiful province. Did a bike trip on Golden Triangle then Mae Hong Son Loop a few years ago. Amazing experience and beautiful people. Northern Thailand has a lot to explore. When I have a chance to go back, I will contact N’Mook for sure 😊 Khob Khun Ka P’Mark for another amazing tour! 🙏 Have a good day.

This video (just like all Mark's food experiences) makes me very happy. Once the travelling restrictions are relaxed, Thailand is the beautiful country I will be heading next for a truly amazing culinary experience...

This is such a delicious natural meal. I'm from Barbados and we have hog plums. We use banana leaves for a few dishes. Culture is so beautiful! Finding the similarities in each other is amazing! I wish that I could partake in this meal. Looks wholesome!

Thank you for another great video. I love how you *never* judge anything but rather take everything with gratitude and genuine excitement! Perhaps that’s why you don’t gain any weight even after consuming so much food! HAHAHA

Thanks Mark for introducing us to a special part of the world. While I was watching this I couldn’t help but notice the similarities in cooking style and some of the ingredients (fermented soybean, fiddlehead ferns, cooking in bamboo) with North-eastern India (Nagaland, Assam, Manipur etc)…you should visit us sometime…
