The civil war in Russia is a vivid example of what can happen in a state when the government artificially preserves social, economic, and political problems, and does not solve them. One of the most tragic episodes of the civil confrontation was the Bolshevik policy of storytelling, which, if you look closely, has deep historical prerequisites.
The deep reasons for the story-telling are the social split that existed between the indigenous Cossacks and the peasants living on the territory of each of the eleven Cossack troops. The Bolsheviks played on this problem and turned it in their favor. The Cossacks defended Russia for centuries and died on the battlefields, however, they also performed repressive functions inside the country.
In every big city of the empire there was a Cossack hundred, which was used to disperse strikes and strikes in factories and factories, as well as to suppress peasant discontent. When tsarism fell, the people did not forget their grievances and sought to return the "debt". The Cossacks themselves did not like this service, but since they took the oath, they did their job well.
The land problem also added fuel to the fire. On the example of the Don Cossack army, it looked like this: on average, one Cossack peasantry had 16.9 dessiatines of land in use, and indigenous peasants born on the Don - 15.1 dessiatines. At the same time, the old Cossack had to equip his son, and most often more than one, with everything necessary for military service.
General Denikin recalled that at the conclusion of an alliance between the Volunteer Army and the Terek Cossacks, the latter tried to "push through" an agreement under which each city they took was given to a three-day looting. Such thinking could only be among those who do not associate themselves with the Russian people in any way, and that's exactly what most Cossacks thought.
It was the Cossacks who came to the new lands first, where they set up their towns and performed the functions of border guards. After them, peasants, merchants, tax collectors and troops arrived. The Russian Empire was a class state in which, in addition to the nobles, clergy, burghers and peasants, there was a "Cossack estate". In exchange for military service, they received allotments of land and did not pay a poll tax.
