If you keep your ear to the Tinkering community, I'm sure you've heard whispers (and shouts) of the Raspberry Pi. And if you wanted to get into making, tinkering, computing, or electronics, the Raspberry Pi is a great tool to have in your tool belt. But what is it? And why is it so popular? Let's find out!

@Evop Fx Digital animation to the degree of this video takes a lot of skill & technical finesse. There are programs that make things such as filters, transitions, etc easily accessible for the general public to slap on video clips, but that doesn't make the more advanced stuff any easier to learn how to pull off well.

@ Getting video out from the USB c and micro USB connector is lottery especially on low end. Despite MHL and USB C video being things it's often not supported. The Pi can run far more operating systems including full desktop Linux rather then limited to Android. An Android that will be outdated and abandoned unless your prepaid phone is popular enough and using Qualcomm so roms can exist.

After being in college for a few years and transitioning to a university I decided I wanted to learn coding and how to be a programmer. I even had a dream where I would learn most if not all coding languages. After a while motivation left me and I started to feel discouraged and question my studies. After watching your video, you have reignited my passion for the science of coding and creating. I have learned more from your video and the applications of the topics you covered than most things I have seen in college.

That isn't a proper mindset for an area like software development. You can't just "learn every language". Some change frequently, and you'll need to know the frameworks and libraries that are useful/productive. Instead you should focus on getting to know the fundamentals of a subset of programming very deeply. Object oriented, databases, servers, etc. Just learning all the languages is rather useless if you're not able to use those to actually do something in the real world.

Im a DIYer, but im not someone who grew up tinkering with computers. I think most people in this hobby start with an interest in the tech, then and look for problems in their life they can solve with tech as an excuse to use it more. As much as i find pi builds impressive, that method of motivation never worked for me. I really needed a problem to come up that couldnt be solved well enough with a low tech solution. Well, as a budding gardener in my 30s, i finally have a gardening project that has me excited at the idea of leaning this DIY tech stuff. I'm really looking forward to pouring myself into the huge knowledge base this community has created to achieve my data gathering goals. The comments section here does give me pause about whether or not the community is open to non-tech newbies.. It seems like some of you feel like this guy is stooping to my level :/ but Im grateful for entry level resources like this.

I would have covered associated energy consumption (.4w - 5.1w depending on the model) and certain drawbacks like having to worry about safe shutdown. While the pi 3/4 can legitimately replace full laptops for many people who only do email/web surfing, it's the fact that it can do so with a fraction of the electrical cost is what makes it worth doing. Good intro video though.

Both, but keep in mind some Arduino models run at 5V and others 3.3V, so you do have be careful how you connect the two together. Also the ESP32 is far more powerful than Arduino, simpler than Pi and has built in WiFi and Bluetooth whilst still programmable using the Arduino IDE.

I have a desire to learn how I can monitor and log data into a desktop computer from an appliance like an AC unit. Generally conditions like voltage present and being able to log the on off times remotely from a desktop 100 feet away from any of these devices. I would like the radio frequency options so that they’re not hardwired. So essentially I would like to hook up some device to my outside air conditioner where I can log on my desktop the times when the compressor turns on and when it turns off. Is this some sort of raspberry pi solution with radio frequency receivers and transmitters? Some sort of device that detects when a voltage is present or not sort of thing and then transmits that state to the desktop application or file I really have no idea. I’m totally mechanically confident but the electronics behind radio frequencies and DYI electronics is totally new to me. Any suggestion or solutions appreciated!
