I found on Amazon is a board to put on the Pi. It is " MakerFocus Pi 4 Power Expansion Board DockerPi Power Board " 20 W. 5 volts 4 amps. It takes from 9 volts to 16 volts and has a buck convertor to send 5 Volts to the Pi it also has a Safe Shutdown. Plus it has a fan. All this for about $22. Ham radio operators have 12 volts or 13.6 if you want. Just put this on your Pi power it from your 12V supply, it gives your Pi the 5V it needs up to 4 Amps and gives an easy safe shutdown, so you don't mess up your program on the SD card. I am just starting and will be ordering this when I order my Pi.

@KM4ACK I've found that 1 or more non-spillable deep cycle Scooter chair batteries will last a Long time. I'm referring to the ones like in the Hoveround chairs. Since I have several power/scooter chairs I do have plenty of batteries available. The one I like best, you may have seen at HamCation 2022 in Orlando. I was there. It has a 1.5' square aluminum box mounted behind the seat. It is great for moving items a bit heavy to carry plus you can put a lot of things in the carry box on the back. I'd fill it with things we bought then run them out to my Suburban and offload then go back. The box on it no longer has the MARS decals on it. Needless to say I can tap right onto the 2 batteries that run the scooter chair plus carry an extra 1 or 2 in the box. I do have the same Buck modules you show here plus I put small 12V to 120V 150W inverter on it that has 2 USB charging ports I can use. Just thought I'd pass that on when you mentioned the part of the battery power. I'll send you some pictures of it when I get it finished. It will have to warm up quite a bit and stop storming before I get out and work on that project. 73's KV4ATV

I have the PiJuice hat for power. Nice combo and protects against surprise shutdowns when power is lost.

A couple of other points: 1. As exciting as it is that the Raspberry Pi 4 is super powerful - it tends to be overkill for ham radio. I have a couple of them and the amount of heat they generate is too much. If you’re going to be out in the field, especially during the hot summer months, even with a fan, the RPi 4 is going to overheat. Plus I try to eliminate as many moving parts as possible. Less moving parts = less places for things to break down. 2. With how close together the USB ports are on the Pi, it’s a good idea to get a small USB hub. With the GPS module, soundcard, and other accessories you may want to connect, you’ll constantly have to make trade offs in terms of what you connect at any given point. There’s no reason to have to choose. The USB standards allow for connecting hundreds of devices simultaneously. Don’t choose. Get a hub and use all of them! :-) It doesn’t need to be anything fancy but getting one that’s powered is something I strongly recommend. Now that you taught me about the “buck”, I’m going to try to figure out a way to use it to power the USB hub in addition to the RPi so I can run both of them off 12V power.

Great recommendations as always! One thing that’s not so obvious about the iPad is that, starting with iOS 13.0, the operating system for the iPad is now called iPadOS. iPadOS of course supports a keyboard, but also now supports a Bluetooth mouse! So you can pair a keyboard and mouse with your iPad/iPad Mini, then use VNC to connect to the Pi. It works amazingly well! Android has included keyboard and mouse support for a long time, so it’s nothing new there. I didn’t realize you could use a mouse with Android until I just decided to try it with a Samsung Galaxy Tab-A and it just worked!

I think a hot spot is generally a device, or hardware/software combo that allows you to connect a remote device(s) to the hot spot and to a network, usually the Internet. Are you using remote desktop, like VNC? If that's the case then you're just doing remote gui access. I'd look at a simple video display and use the hdmi connector. You already have a bluetooth keyboard, just use that to connect to the Raspberry Pi or better yet a wired keyboard that won't need to be charged and will draw minimal power from the Pi.

Lots of good info even for us experienced guys .... thanks .... actually I should say there is LOTS of good info in all your videos especially your command line to fix Pi dependencies during the installation of WSJT-X . I use a number of RPi model 3b+ for 3d printing, astronomy cameras, SDRPlay and the 6 meter FT8 & WSPR station and have not had a performance problem so far. Some are cooled, others are not. I think the success is from using high quality SD cards, Samsung is my choice and some are 4 years old. I would like to request a primer on compiling the source code for the latest WSJT-X 2.2.2 on Raspian ...... thanks again.

Been subscribed for a little while, but not had time to check you out properly! wish i had done it sooner. As a new ham in the UK, I find the US info very handy as you are usually a little ahead of us! Am going to have a look at the Pi, and compare to Arduino which I have and am playing with. Very comprehensive Jason. I'm surprised you didn't post the link to answer my question about Piemen and JS8. Now I know. those buck converters look great, I'll have to get some. I guess if you use the very basic USB soundcard,you then have to make the audio interface with 1:1 transformers, etc like I did 30 years ago!

I converted an Acer chrome book to Gallium OS and run all software from there, saves having more wires, batteries especially out in the field it simplifies things a lot.

Any chance you can update this with new tech and New links?

I was looking around. there is a load of boards that can be put on the Pi. one runs drives and has 12 volt input to power the Pi. Some other boards have the converter made in them . But the small converter boards is the lowest price way. But if you want to add other things then the low power the small converter boards I have only do 2 amps and that is about what the main Pi board needs. I like the power supply to be much more than what is needed. The failure of the board can carouse higher voltage to the Pi and damage it.

Take a look at the Brydge keyboards. Works great on my iPad mini and pro. One less thing to haul around and acts as a case.

Instead of a SD/USB, you can now use a m.3 or SSD hat - it will last longer than the SD card, and have a lot more memory than the USB you could use to download how-to videos and all of Wikipedia.

Thanks for this video, Jason. I'm just getting to the Pi as a station/field computer and my Pi 4 was delivered yesterday. I was able to get it up and running using the NOOBS card that came with my kit (Canakit). I'm on old linux geek, having grown up in the 90s with Red Hat running on a handful of workstations in my lab at the university. I put those systems together for my graduate students to use and then maintained them to keep them running. The OS was the most stable I have experience with. Those machines would run for months without a reboot, only being rebooted when I updated the kernel. Now I need to get my feet wet with Pi and another version of linux. I'm looking for a basic book on using linux on Pi. If you have a suggestion, I'd appreciate it. This video was really good to help me start the process of assembling support equipment for my first Pi. My intent is to use the Pi as my home station computer and as my field computer. Now to make one more Amazon order with a few things that I have not bought.

Has anyone found a good case for the Pi4 in the field that supports having a fan AND an RTC? Cases seem to be either tall with no fan or short with a fan (with the fan interfering with the RTC).

I have an 857d and Sabrent sound card. Can you steer me to a source for the cable you use for that? Keeping in mind that I have an LDG YT-100 tuner plugged into the CAT port on my 857d CAT port. Pi videos are soooooooooo informative. Thank you.

Jason, still amazed you wrote the V2 Script, it has been working flawlessly! I bought the Buck Converter with USB that you suggested, but it does not like my Pi4. It will power my Phone, but the Pi4 doesn't like it and won't boot. I think it is failing to provide enough amps. I bought the 4 pack, so I will try with another one. Any suggestions?

I'm a little surprised you use a buck converter. I wired in a tiny buck converter to my truck to run a homemade TNC on my TM-V71A. When I plugged the TNC into the converter, I got so much RFI, my S-meters were maxed out with no transmissions coming in. Have you experienced any noise issues with the buck converters?

Using a buck converter or a 2000ah type external cell.phone charger and both still given.me a low voltage message on the pi ????????

Jason, I am a new viewer and new Pi user. Have you run into any ground loop issues? If my Pi and Radio are on the same power source, the noise is horrible and kills digital modes. If I disconnect the power cord to my 817 and use the internal battery, or use a separate battery for the Pi it's all good. The noise is REALLY bad if the Pi is acting as the hotspot/DHCP server and significantly lower if i let my phone be the hotspot the Pi connects to. Looking for any input on this before I re-invent the wheel. All my cables are ferrited...I don't want to use an isolation transformer on the audio cables if I don't have to, and I don't want to carry two separate batteries to the field either. lol

I have Yaesu FT3DR and BaoFeng BF-F8HP can you do digital( psk31, js8call, jt8 and others) modes on it? What attachments needed?

Jason, do you think there a significant advantage to the Pi 4 over the Pi 3 for HF soundcard digital modes in a portable setup, and if so, is the extra cost for more memory justified? Tnx! John K0MXL
