I have to say as much as I love this game: god lord Ratchet design aged like milk here. ACIT design it's the peak point of Ratchet design and everyone imho, they never topped that style even until now (but they are close on Rift Apart)

I'll admit, this game has fallen down on my ranking over the years, from being my 2nd favorite R&C to number 6, but I still love it. The writing is flawed and the visuals haven't aged the best, but it was fascinating getting so much new lore, and it used to look amazing. Also, the gameplay is undeniably super polished and some of my favorite in the series!

For sure not a bad games by any stretch, but yes as you said there's just thing about it that don't hold up. Strictly how it is to play though it's incredibly polished and very addicting!

Never found Rusty Pete ''why'' laugh funny but the moment right after he's done screaming, he's all like: welp, that's over with, Ratchet is the new captain (which could be funny in an abursdist mood) Also, you can climb walls with the razor claws (meaning yes, you can go the azimuth chamber on the first visit of Fastoon on NG+. You can't really do anything with that since nothing is there other than level geometry but it's cool to see the area at daytime)

@@MrJarheadTV Speedrun in ToD push the shock ravager and razor claws to insane levels. NG+ speedruns starts with shock ravager + wall bounce jank to go straight to the end of the kerwan level in under a minute.

Speaking of Rift Apart, while I've tried to get into the RnC games multiple times (original trilogy on PC, future series on PC with emulation) they never quite landed for me. Until Rift Apart. Who would have guessed that what I really needed to enjoy the games, was to get to be an even cuter Lombax than Ratchet already was. (Rivet)

Despite ToDs issues this is still by far the best aging early PS3 game (06-08) due to the frame rate, art style and controls (outside of the sixaxis). As for it being the most challenging/difficult RaC game ehh it depends on what you consider "difficult" as it's no secret ToD has some damage balancing issues (especially in NG+) which I think is supposed to balance the devices. In RaC 1 it's mainly due to the relativity sloppy gunplay and loose controls but that game also has a few genuinely challenging platforming sections too. Rift Aparts combat in particular has honestly the best overall damage balancing in the series (better than even Deadlocks) and the hardest difficulty doesn't really feel like the enemies are bullet sponges due to the focus on cranking up the enemy aggressiveness instead of having *just* them having a lot of health so it feels more challenging instead of frustrating/boring (minus one specific arena challenge during the early game due to increase in enemy AI and numbers).
@MrJarheadTV
@MrJarheadTV Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah aesthetically and control-wise it definitely holds up incredibly well. That's interesting to know about Rift Apart too, I really haven't paid much attention to it so that when I do eventually play it I can go into it as fresh as possible, but that's great to hear.

Surprisingly enough, the algorithm decided to show this video to me and as a result I binged all your Ratchet and Clank vids just now. Good stuff, like your editing style and commentary. Definitely gonna be checking out more of your stuff. Your opinions on the PS2 games basically mirror mine - I had never understood why R&C 3 was praised more than the previous entry. Up until recently, history had sort of repeated itself and ToD had struck a better chord with me than Crack in Time, in spite of the broad opinion. It wasn't until playing it again and seeing this video that I realized why I had forgotten so much about it. The weapon selection in ToD felt particularly unique (which was basically the only thing I remembered about it and was the primary reason I preferred it over CiT), but the "Pixarification" of the series and the awkward transition of doing so just made the game feel so bland. A lot of the unique personality it had in previous games was lost. It was the first time I felt like completing a R&C game was a bit of a drag. It wasn't until CiT that they had settled into the new style better and the games just felt a bit better rounded off overall. However, I'll always still be an advocate for the absurd, crass humor the older games had.

That's awesome to hear you binged the videos like that thanks to the algorithm, I really appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoy the videos! For me with Tools it's not even so much that it felt like a drag cause the gameplay's good enough on it's own, I just was so apathetic towards the story and found myself kinda tuning it out. Meanwhile now that I've finished replaying A Crack In Time, I felt myself hanging on almost every word. So many great scenes that overall felt like the Pixar presentation they were going for was finally fleshed out and achieved.

Glad to see you return to R&C vids! I never played this one unfortunately, but I'd like to pick it up one day. Something that struck me here was how... unimpressive the game looked visually. I honestly had trouble telling the difference between clips from this game and clips from the HD versions of the ps2 games (gameplay specifically, cutscenes give it away). Does Crack in Time look any better? It's been years since I've played it but I remember it looking quite nice. Looks aren't everything, of course, it was just something that caught my attention here
@MrJarheadTV
@MrJarheadTV Жыл бұрын
That's pretty interesting, I can see why you'd think that though. Something about Tools' graphics makes the game feel a little blurry. I actually had to sharpen the video a good bit to make it look better. As for Crack In Time I think it looks better but not a ton better. The pre-rendered cutscenes though look WAYYYY better, like legit movie level stuff. Tools' just weren't quite up to that level yet IMO.

tachyon's sole W is being able to nearly wipe out the lombax race on the sole basis of, despite the lombaxes being so technologically advanced, they somehow never had any major settlements or colonies beyond their home planet, let alone their home galaxy. i know insomniac tried broadening the franchise's demographic with the future games and beyond, but scifi is still a liiiiiittle bit more smarter than this regardless of scope. honestly the story of the future games is a little more bearable if you just interpret the future saga (and the games beyond them) as in-universe holofilms mythologizing the legacy of a fuzzball mechanic and reject warbot that just so happen to have saved the galaxy before.
@MrJarheadTV
@MrJarheadTV Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's strange too, and even beyond Tachyon's accomplishments it's hard to believe he ever achieved anything when nearly every time he's on screen he's a completely incompetent bozo. That's a good way of interpreting the story as well!
@kokorogensou
@kokorogensou Жыл бұрын
@@MrJarheadTV yeah, it's simultaneously baffling and no wonder this bug is second banana to the robot pirates. it's to a point where the lore tries to justify this by saying that tachyon built the robot pirates to scavenge lombax technology (iirc it's the IRIS computer that says this), and then just abandoned them to their own devices when they served their purpose. mind you, this stuff takes place before tachyon overthrew the lombaxes. and HOO BOY DO I GOT SOME THOUGHTS REGARDING ALISTER
@MrJarheadTV
@MrJarheadTV Жыл бұрын
What's your thoughts on Alister?
@kokorogensou
@kokorogensou Жыл бұрын
@@MrJarheadTV oh man you've unleashed a storm. alister is a fantastic antagonist and a great foil for ratchet marred by the lore TOD had set up. he is the reason tachyon fucked over the lombaxes to begin with: tachyon showed his own blueprints at a lombax meeting (discussing how the polaris galaxy "became a dangerous place with the absence of the cragmites"), and since his stuff was so much more advanced, he promised to exchange them with the lombaxes if they gave tach access to their technology. alister mentions that the lombaxes distrusted him (likely because of the whole cragmite thing) and he's undoubtedly aware of the history between the lombax/cragmite conflict, yet still gives tachyon access to lombax tech because "he felt it was for the good of the galaxy", nevermind the fact that not only have the cragmites been established as irredeemably evil, but RATCHET'S OWN DAD AND SUPPOSEDLY ALISTER'S BEST FRIEND told him to not go through with it. i'm honestly of the mind that alister may be withholding information from ratchet, even with his grief over the effects of his choice, and his desire to make things right. was alister good friends with tachyon's adoptive family (who might've had the family name of tachyon, now that i think about it), and was that what influenced his decision? was tachyon just really persuasive despite almost every other lombax distrusting him? we never know because we know so little about tachyon's past beyond "he was raised by lombaxes and somehow found out about the cragmites". either alister is really gullible or really inept, which might be the case considering the lombaxes never expanded off their home planet/galaxy. i know i'm being a broken record, but scifi is smarter than this, and as good as ACIT's storytelling is and as much as alister is a fascinating character, a lot of the future saga's lore (mostly involving the lombaxes) just falls apart when you think about it for more than five minutes. and it's kinda disappointing, because i genuinely do think there's a lot of potential with some of the lore they introduced in future; some fanon works do some great exploration of stuff like the lombaxes and the events surrounding them and their disappearance. but as far as the future saga stands as it is, it's easier for me to conceptualize it as an in-universe movie franchise in the R&C setting. i mean, apparently IG's gone on record to say the events of secret agent clank are in-universe fiction as an episode of clank's show, so why not? sorry for the ramble, i'm just really passionate about funny space rat with gun!
@MrJarheadTV
@MrJarheadTV Жыл бұрын
@@kokorogensou That's a totally fair point and I can definitely see what you're coming from. And honestly I do agree with you because yeah he does just kinda sound like a dumbass for how he handled things lol, but in a way that makes me sympathize with him that much more because Azimuth knows he screwed up *so badly*, so it makes it believable that he goes to the lengths that he does to reverse his mistake.

While I understand the concern over them actually being way bigger deals than they appeared at first. It doesn't take away from Ratchet and Clank earning their spots as heroes because they still went through a ton of ventures and battles along the way. Things didn't really fall into their lap. I think people get a bit too cynical about ideas like fate when it comes to chosen one stories.

This game always escaped me for the longest time. I had a ps3 for all that era but it never occurred to me to play the ps3 ratchet games until I was able to when I upgrade my ps plus to premium on Thanksgiving. I did like the gameplay, like I loved looking forward to going to mew planets like I did with the original trilogy but the story here is weak. Like this game is supposed to be the first soft reboot of the series while being a continuation as well. I also loved hunting the dinosaurs in that planet, and I also didnt mind grinding for bolts to get the armor because that gameplay is amazing. I also dug the ending credits song when I was 18 cause I was in my daft punk phase then but yeah the story is weak here
