In Pirates, I saw the dialogue a bit differently than you. I think the “latest style in London” means the dress not corset (the father doesn’t sees what is the issue when he says that) and the style had more tiny waist due to fashion so Elizabeth responds that women in London must have learned not to breathe. At least that’s how I saw it! Great video!

She's said on the record that she prefers not to be in present-day films because so often the roles available for women are of supportive characters - spouses and mothers first and not their own person - or of women who are raped, which surely happens but I'm going to guess she means the way that violence against women is glamourised in a sort of "downfall" way. Which is probably fair when you remember that she was seventeen in Love Actually, where her character is the object of stalker-ish fascination by her fiancé and husband's best friend. In contrast, she said she's offered the roles of inspiring women in period pieces - people like Colette or Georgiana, I'm assuming she's referring to.

I just like to think of her costume at the start of pirates as her dad buying a dress that's too small for her and had to tightlace her so much insisting it was fashionable somewhere far away because he doesn't want to admit he made a mistake.

Yes! I think that too. Plus, Elizabeth seems to not really care about wearing corsets throughout the movies, which makes me believe that the one she is wearing in the beginning of the first movie is actually too tight and it is hurting her. (or it might just be me trying to justify historical inaccuracies in my favorite movies, maybe? haha)

@@vivianedepieri896 I always interpreted Elizabeth's corset/stay problems at the beginning of the movie as being the result of her being raised by a single father and growing up in the Caribbean (i.e. away from normal English society). Since Elizabeth didn't grow up with a mother to instruct her in proper corset wear, I can certainly imagine Elizabeth growing up wearing an older or lighter corset than was necessarily fashionable to counteract the Caribbean heat (and because it's harder to get supplies). Styles in the 1700s did get a little bit tighter than the 1600s so, it's possible Elizabeth was used to wearing an older looser style. I can certainly believe her father's comment about it being the latest fashion being a reference to the style of corset rather than the corset itself. But, even ignoring that, I think it's safe to say that Elizabeth's father would have no idea how to size a corset so, it makes sense he'd get one too small. I don't think he'd even be aware of his mistake. Either way, Elizabeth's maids are quite obviously lacing her too tight at the beginning, which could be due to the corset being too small or her maids simply trying too hard with this new style and tight-lacing Elizabeth more than they should/need to. As you kinda alluded to, Elizabeth is clearly wearing a corset again by the end of the film so, the problem definitely seems specific to that particular corset.

Yes, they make it obvious that is isn’t the idea of wearing one she’s confused by but the tight lacing- which she WOULD NOT have been doing since she was 12.

For me, I just struggle with the very IDEA of tight lacing before the mid 1800s. Tightlacing wasn't possible before they got metal eyelets for the ties - tightlacing puts too much pressure on the hand-sewn eyelets, and will with time tear the fabric.

I actually liked how the red dress in Pirates was sort of tacky because in my mind, I always imagined that it came from a lady of the night or something along those lines. Which is why I think it's sort of an insult for Barbosa to ask Elizabeth to wear it.

I don't care if it looks tacky, the whole Pirates has this "tacky" thing going on about the films, they were not meant to be historical. It's the style and the humour that really makes these movies. And Keira looked hot in that red dress.

Exactly! The whole point of the dress was an insult down to the threats that were her alternative. It was never a dress meant to flatter or fit her, it was meant to insult and demean her.

Even though the Bennett’s are class type wise, higher than the Bingley’s, it’s made very clear throughout the book that they still don’t have that money. Class is class, but it doesn’t inherently make you wealthy- unlike the American idea of it where class is wealth. Basically, the Bennett’s are middle class. Jane Austen herself was the daughter of a gentleman, but she was in no way wealthy.

The thing I don't like about the 2005 version is it's overexplaining, like the audience was stupid, which, I think, is only partly due to it being a movie instead of 5 hours of a miniseries. The class/wealth distinction is one example: The Bennets were sure not as wealthy as others, but still the principal inhabitants of their area and not as poor as shown in the 2005 movie (the Lucases didn't have too much money in comparison for all of their kids either, else Charlotte's dowry alone would have made her a more eligible bride). Their problem is the estate being entailed away from the female line and the mom not having been of too high a status either, so she couldn't leave her daughters much. The 1995 version shows this in a far more subtle way: the father calculating, worried, the house could use a little work, the dresses get reworn and so on.

the Bennets weren't "middle class" because at that time, "middle class" wasn't really a thing- there was a major divide between rich (owned land, women spent their days visiting each other, goal was to marry well) and poor (trying to make ends meet, women worked). The way I generally think of it is that the (book) Bennets were rich, but the Bingleys were just more rich and the Darcys were shockingly rich. While it is true that the Bingleys made their fortune by trade (Austen mentions this to imply that Caroline's perceived superiority over the Bennets wasn't all that she was making it out to be), they definitely were higher-class than the Bennets for the sole reason that Charles was making more money than Mr. Bennet and didn't have to provide for as many people. However, the Bennets were not poor!!!!!!! This is one of the many, many reasons I hate the 2005 movie. In the book, even the Lucases were rich, just less so than the Bennets, but I'll emphasize again that all the characters were rich to a certain extent. Otherwise, it just wouldn't make sense for them to be moving in the same society as each other. Awful bangs-wearing, no-petticoats, loose-hair 2005 Elizabeth Bennet would never have been able to even interact with people like the Bingleys and Darcys because they wouldn't even have had a chance to meet each other, if their class divide was as great as it's made in the 2005 movie. which is why it just doesn't make sense :/ and also treats the viewer like they're stupid :(

@@jessnather2700 I don't hate the 2005 movie, because hate is a really strong feeling and the word gets thrown about too much. The film is, what I would rewatch if it was shown on regular tv and I just really didn't feel like searching through Netflix or so for something to watch. As for the overexplaining part: That's what I said :D Another example that stands out imo is Charlotte basically clashing with Lizzy about her engagement to Mr. Collins. Book Lizzie can't believe it either but the interaction is way less angry . You would think that explanation of Charlotte's wasn't necessary, if for no other reason, than "it's set in the past, so all the girls will want to marry" is a concept you would have gotten from many other movies, just wouldn't have questioned it and that doesn't require any knowledge of historical circumstances at all. So they could have went, with what Charlotte says in the book and leave it like that, instead of showing an actual problem, yes, but just dropping it in, because of runtime like that. Another point would be Lydia telling Lizzy that Darcy was, at times, less fastidious, prideful or "stuck up" as her. Yes, Lizzy has to go through a process of acknowledging her character and it's flaws and could have used someone to tell her the truth to her face at times. However Lydia doing so, I think, is due to a faster paced storytelling. It is sure out of character for book Lydia who, from what we know, stays ever obnoxious and ignorant and silly and never acknowledges the harm she's done. Movie Lydia somehow grows up a little very fast, and it would appear that she is to be found more likeable, by just having married for young love and her own free spirit.... No...

@@jessnather2700 Middle Class was indeed a thing during the regency. What do you think bourgeoisie means? The European middle class was emerging in the early half of the 18th century. Now, Mr Bennet is the landed gentry, but his marriage to his wife has lowered the status of the family down, as Mrs Bennet was born middle class. So her and her daughters, (as wealth was not passed down through its female members), are indeed middle class. Also, it should be noted, the middle class aren’t poor. And never will be considered so. I never called the Bennet’s poor. If you wanna learn more about the origins of the European middle class, there’s this great essay written by Jürgen Kocka at The University of The Chicago Press Journal. “Merchants, entrepreneurs, and capitalists, professors, judges, journalists, ministers, and high ranking civil servants differed in many respects, but they shared a sense of social distance from the privileged aristocracy and, on the continent, from absolute monarchy.” We can also see the usage of the middle class as we can understand it used in 1745 in James Bradshaw’s very long titled: “A Scheme to Prevent the Running of Irish Wools to France: And Irish Woollen Goods to Foreign Countries; by Prohibiting the Importation of Spanish Wools Into Ireland, ... By a Merchant of London.” It was also used in medieval society, people who’d wealth as gained by being successful traders, and were seen ultimately as a threat to nobility. The Journal: www.jstor.org/stable/2124755 The reason I tried so hard on this KZfaq comment is truly because I don’t like to think that people believe there was a lack of a middle class, that was suddenly created in 1970s America or post WW1 Europe. The middle class led the French Revolution, as unlikely as it seems, and shouldn’t be underestimated or erased from history.

@@Xnhl I don’t care for the 95 version much, because everyone looks like they raided a dress history exhibit. It’s stuffy and none of the dresses have any character specific to anyone. Also, everyone is so much meaner in the miniseries, which is why I don’t care much for the book either. Especially when it comes to Mary and Mrs Bennet. Idk, I’m a sensitive person lmao

my pick for keira costumes have gotta be from the duchess (srry atonement 😔) i just adore a big skirt, other than the military-esque dress my favorite is the lighter blue one where she has the giant feather in her hair! and only because once upon a time i did a video on it, she wears 37 dresses throughout the film!

Dutchess needed bigger bigger wigs hats for Georgiana, she was such a fashion icon at the time with hats and she started the trend of so big wings that women needed to be on floor of carriages while travelling to events and putting fruits and even miniature ships in their hair. But otherwise it’s great (well she doesn’t really look like she just gave birth in the end of the film but that’s Hollywood). I love your channel btw!!

Funny you should mention that because both Natalie Portman and Keira Knightly were in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace and I think I read somewhere that Keira's mum came on set one day and didn't recognise her daughter who was wearing the same costume as Natalie

If you're open to suggestions lmao, I haven't seen anyone do analyses of historical costuming on Broadway (or musical theater in general but if we're talking musicals with a lot of information and images accessible.......... it's Broadway usually) and people have made some CHOICES.

Hamilton has EXCELLENT costuming and is as historically accurate as possible without splitting breeches whilst performing modern dance choreography. SIX does a fantastic job of incorporating the main stays (ha, pun) of 16th century fashions (pearl trims, luxury, slashed sleeves, bodice/sleeve silhouettes, etc) with modern popstar aesthetics (which, incidentally, are as influenced by the practicalities of performing under heavy lighting, fog effects, quick-changes, and athleticism as they are influenced with sex appeal - leotards, cut-outs, bondage-esque elements that help support posture and the diaphragm when you're at full energy for three hours straight). Phantom, Hairspray, and Les Mis TEND to be fairly accurate, given how pointedly they are set in history, but their prolific nature means that costuming has had time to change and be reinterpreted, so the actual accuracy of any given show would vary from season to season. Tbh, i've not watched many musicals live and am relying on televised performance clips & official soundtracks. I've yet to venture into the opera fandom (am waiting on that Silm adaption!) but i've heard that opera is THE place to embrace historical costuming & that corsetry is given its rightful dues as Support Garment Of Win throughout the opera world.

I was so happy when you uploaded. Great video! My perspective on the “french* women must have learned not to breathe“ thing in Pirates of the Carribean: I always understood the scene as her dad having sent too small measurements to France*, so the dress he gifted her didn't actually fit. As in, he had the dress made for a 16 year old Elizabeth, but now she's 17 and grew a little. And she forgot to consider that fact when she critized the “corset“ or whatever. I most definately am rationalizing way way too much here 😌 Edit: *London in England, not France

Also, since she was from a part of the world that was “less fashionable” (i.e. her dialogue implying that nobody in Barbados would be wearing corsetry), the only visual reference she, her dressmakers, and her staff would have would be fashion plates, which are definitely more exaggerated in terms of proportions than actual garments. That could have lead to the tightlacing in order to achieve the illustrated proportions.

I feel like the Pirates of the Caribbean corset inaccuracy is somewhat justifiable because a) the corset being too tight for her to breathe in and causing her to fall is an actual plot point, not just a throwaway line b) the line 'you like pain? try wearing a corset' she says when she whacks that zombie pirate would not have had the same impact if she had said 'try wearing a pair of stays' c) most of her actual dresses are historically accurate and the thing I like about this movie is that the female characters are actually more accurate then the men (the British navy didn't have a standard uniform at that time I believe and of course Jack Sparrow's costume is based more on Keith Richards and the Edwardian influence on 70s rockstars than anything in the 18th century) which is unusual for a period piece as they normally try to sex up the women, but in POTC they do it with Jack rather than Elizabeth. Just my 2 cents though, great video :)

I've actually given point A a lot of thought, and I still think it could have easily been changed to be more accurate and without needing to write a work around. Just change the reason for fainting from "can't breath because of tight corset" to "overheating because the dress is silk or wool that is too heavy for midday in the Caribbean". You could even keep the line about the dress being popular in London, just change Elizabeth's objection to the fact that it is inappropriate for the hot weather.

I’m in LOVE with how the clothes in Anna Karenina have a part in the story themselves and symbolize sth. Keira said that you can see in the beginning she’s all dressed up and it shows her dignity and religious beliefs and loyalty to her husband but as the movie goes on her clothes start to look like they are falling down cause she’s falling for Vronsky. Such a good movie. I love the theatrical theme so much too.

I love the Imitation game, but I will never stop being annoyed at the styling choices for Keira. I get if they wanted to go for a "Joan is not like other girls" stereotype, but keeping yourself fresh and in fashion became like a patriotic thing in England during ww2 (hence the name "Victory rolls" for the hairstyle). In this movie, every other woman is styled with 1940's makeup and hair, and Keira sticks out like a sore thumb with her more modern natural makeup and un-styled hair. The hair especially. Even just a long braid or a small bun in the nape of the neck would've looked more period accurate.

@@catsandsnakes711 Nicole Kidman fell from a trapeze and broke a rib. That rib was then aggravated and rebroke because she was dangerously tight lacing. She's quoted as trying to achieve an 18in waist - as Vivienne Leigh had in Gone with the wind. At any rate a well fitted properly laced corset is actually extremely good for broken ribs.

I don’t think the dress was underwhelming because of the lack of corset though. People expected a more golden, hoop dress rather than the fluffy banana yellow thing in the movie. I wouldn’t blame it all on Emma when the designers could have done more too

Jacqueline Durran was happy to help her achieve this version of Belle, even if historically it was not accurate. I mean this same designer was behind Anna Karenina and Pride and Prejudice. That dress was probably not what she personally envisioned. 🙃

I'm an aspiring director who's also way into film theory and I gotta say I LOVE the analyses you do. I think your eye is very similar to mine when it comes to analyzing these details that many, even some filmmakers, wouldn't give much thought to! Costume is so important to character, and especially important in period pieces. I would love to see your take on the costume design in The Favourite - It's a favorite of mine (no pun intended!) from an indie filmmaker/theorist perspective, and I'd love to see if they put as much thought and research into costumes as I hoped they did!

The costumes in the Favourite are purposefully inaccurate. They kind of put the male characters in those ridiculous outfits with big wigs etc that women would’ve typically worn, while putting the female characters in more neutral and practical clothes. Interesting choice if you ask me

Unpopular opinion but this is one of my favorite movies and style wise it has some of my favorite looks (the masquerade dress😭). for lizzie bennet i totally see the reason they made her colour palette like that, let me explain- BARE IN MIND I HAVE NO BACKGROUND IN COSTUME DESIGN AND HAVE NOT READ THE WHOLE BOOK,as of now, SO DONT TAKE MY OPINION TO HEART, I JUST REALLY LOVE THE FILM AND COSTUME DESIGN lizzie is not meant to be the prettiest in her family, that's jane, so i feel it fit that her wardrobe emulates that. lizzie is seen wearing browns, beiges and earthy tones, as mentioned in the video, this ultimately draws ones eyes away from her, she blends into the background, allowing your eyes to go to one of her sisters, this secures in our mind that she is of neutral looks, she isn't meant to be the prettiest (keira is STUNNING, which lizzie is not meant to be), she doesn't over-compensate for her looks with beautiful gowns, and her hair is never the best, this allows us to focus on her traits more than her looks, she is smart, sassy and caring, which some of her sisters aren't, so she stands out in that sense. I KNOW THIS IS JUST ABOUT KEIRA BUT ILL SPEAK ABOUT THE OTHER SISTERS TOO kitty and lydia are seen to wear lots of greens, be it an emeraldy shade or a light green, this reflects their envy and jealousy of almost everyone they meet, particularly kitty, she is always in lydia's shadow, lydia is chosen to go to brighton, kitty is not, and so on and so on, so for her to wear greens, it keeps that theme of envy and jealousy. for both kitty and lydia, they are always fawning over someone, someone with money. in this adaptation they are not that well off, so it is understandable for them to be jealous of money, as they aren't 'that' rich. jane is constantly wearing baby blues, which are light and pure, to symbolise her innocence and natural beauty. she is effortlessly beautiful, perfect almost, with they way she holds herself, her class and elegance, she shines as the most 'acceptable' of the sisters, and her wardrobe emulates that, her wardrobe is sweet and fresh, like her. mary stands out as the one who doesn't care for looks, she cares about intelligence and character, so it is believable that her wardrobe is the worst of the 5 sisters, she wears greys and blacks, doesn't wear a lot of pattern, if any, as she doesn't care for it, she sticks to learning piano and reading books. i know this'll just get lost in the comments but if anyone sees it, hello! and just a reminder I DONT KNOW AN AWFUL LOT ABOUT COSTUME DESIGN THIS IS JUST WHAT I CAME UP WITH AFTER WATCHING THE FILM , all my knowledge comes from videos like these, so i hope it's not too crap lmao

Even at 11 years old, I knew that "it's the latest fashion" was bs Women had been wearing stays for a century and pairs of bodies for quite some time before that. Also you can't even really tightlace until metal grommets are invented, and tightlacing even then was for fashion photos, not all day wear.

Yes! The Bennets are actually second class, just like Mr Darcy, both parties own state, just not as wealthy. In the other hand, Mr Bingley, could be considered third class because they rent the state in Netherfield.
