No, it *was* condescending. The moral and intellectual superiority was all but dripping from his tongue. It seems to me that you think people studying theology are interested in propagating theological ideas, this is not true. Many who study religion do it to more effectively counter it or simply to learn from it. Even if what they teach us is fiction, understanding it in depth helps us understand why some humans behave or behaved in certain ways. This makes it important to anthropological, historical and cultural studies. Therefor it should never be dismissed as a waste of time. Hmm. Couldn't "are you a good atheist" be a legitimate question, depending on the context? If the question were framed as "are you intellectually consistent in applying the standards and principles because of which you don't find arguments for gods existing convincing to any other subject they may be relevant to?" I think it might work. For instance, I find atheists who believe in astrology frustrating. The second question is just nonsense.

Talking of Dawkins I read his book once in 2011 and some of his arguments were so powerful they stayed with me. One is the scale of theism to atheism and how he is a 9/10 because he is almost absolutely certain that there in no god. My favorite is the one where he says Christians disregard science and evidence when it contradicts them but would raise its importance to the skies if there was scientific evidence for god. He speaks of "regurgitating logical fallacies" whilst dropping a huge "no true Scotsman" and strawmanning every single argument. This priest is a textbook example of the Dunning-Kruger effect in action. He fancies himself a deep thinker, but his questions are almost laughable. And his claim to really want us to be "good atheists" is clearly just rhetoric; he drops numerous clues as to his real opinion of all atheists.

Dunning-Kruger effect, in psychology, a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general. According to the researchers for whom it is named, psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger, the effect is explained by the fact that the metacognitive ability to recognize deficiencies in one’s own knowledge or competence requires that one possess at least a minimum level of the same kind of knowledge or competence, which those who exhibit the effect have not attained. Because they are unaware of their deficiencies, such people generally assume that they are not deficient, in keeping with the tendency of most people to “choose what they think is the most reasonable and optimal option.”

Honestly nature's amazing: the more we learn, the more questions we have because we realize how little we really know. It's this huge struggle to understand something that won't end until long after our sun's died and our species has died out, that gets bigger and bigger without ever getting fuller... And here we are, tiny insignificany collections of proteins and sugars and bacteria and electricity, wanting to know what's going to happen *then* when it's an unfathomably huge number of years away beyond our lifespans inside something that might or might not be a superfluid and might or might not have started from a white hole. I don't get how people can look at the fact we're literally made out of dead stars and we eat starstuff everyday and we're essentially tiny recycled chunks of the universe trying to understand the universe itself, and go "that's lame, let me tell you about this old white man that lives in the clouds and is an abusive father and acts just like a human that I believe made us".

In my case, reading the mentioned Augustine of Hippo was a not insignificant part of making me reject catholic Christianity. Possibly the most influential thinker in all of Christianity is adamant that all but 144,000 would go on to be tortured forever after death and that this was somehow good and just, and explicitly justifies why unbaptized babies must go to hell.

edit: yeah it was a bit like that. the point: atheists claim they are very rational people, they only believe in facts and reason. however they dont have a better base for morality than what christians have. they accept their subjective experience of being and their personal identity as truth. they accept moral relativism and that other people have different ideas of what is good/bad, still they cling to what they think about the world and this determine their behavior. but it is a contradiction. you cannot say that "I want this world to be good for myself and everyone else" and that John Wayne Gacy's (the childkiller clown's) concept of good/bad is no different. u have to believe that your idea of good/bad is the real one. even if it is subjective, because otherwise the concept of good/bad becomes meaningless. but how can u decide whose subjective idea about morality is the correct one? there were attempts by people like Sam Harris to make objective ethics, which failed spectacularly. this is why i wrote that u cannot know, only make a belief that u are correct. so what i want to say, u can be an atheist but u will have to face with that there will be things which u have to believe and so there is not a big of a difference between yourselves and those theists u ridicule.

A diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis really brought home the fact that theodicy is ultimately little more than ontologized narcissism and ontologizing condescension in the wake of human suffering and the absurdity of evil. Dr. Bart Ehrman's book on the subject really resonated with me. It's not necessarily a dereliction of my faith but the search for better questions that now engages me. @@beek014 He's not creepy. He's actually a passionate advocate for the poor and for social and racial justice. But he's a kid at the age where he thinks he knows everything and has yet to experience the world not learned that wisdom comes from realizing how little we know for certain, not how much we think we do. Give him time to mature and his confidence will mellow. In fact, when his naivety confronts the politics and intrigue of the Catholic hierarchy, I could see him eventually leaving his order if not his faith. I've seen it happen before, particularly with young liberal priests. He's already taken a lot of heat for releasing a video that was originally titled "Abortion isn't that important" and was pointing out how lots of issues pertain to being pro-life and people who oppose abortion shouldn't automatically vote for Republicans who have caused so many deaths due to their discouraging wearing masks and getting vaccinated. He's learning. Slowly. Be patient. He thinks he's teaching us by engaging with atheists and the world at large; he's going to be the one learning though.
