Thanks for the conversation. Ratzinger in Introduction to Christianity itself offers a critique of the Kierkegaard story of the clown and the way it put the clown in a position of certainty and the villagers in a position of ignorance. His response is that while the story has truth it doesn't wrestle with the fact both belief and doubt are both a common experience to most people.
