It is super practical for many buyers, only downside is brutal price. Hybrid model better value at $10,000 less after $5000 government rebate for comparable model. You'll never make that money back in fuel savings, let alone increased battery replacement cost on Proms model.

I just hope that the $13,000 rebate program in Quebec is standard anywhere in Canada.

I was hyped, but they are really struggling to bring it to market. It looks like it will be almost impossible to actually acquire one. I have been leasing cars from Toyota for nearly 2 decades, however I think my current car which is the Prius Prime PHEV will be my last one. I got the taste of this plug in capability and I want way more than Toyota can offer.

Doesn't make sense cost-wise owning Prime over hybrid model over 10 years as you'll never make your money back on increased cost (outside Quebec). Example (XSE hybrid vs XSE Prime): Prime costs $56,800 including freight, delivery, gst. Subtract $5000 federal rebate = $51,800. $10,000 MORE then XSE gas model. Factor in fuel savings over 10 years and you still don't make that money back. Then factor in added replacement cost of much bigger PHEV battery and you're even more behind. Lastly, as for handling (as per Alex on Autos) Prime model handles slightly worse then hybrid model due to added weight. 👎

@@James-il3tq Totally don't agree. Did you listen to the video? The price even in the rest of Canada is lower than the top two Rav4 hybrids. Even base to base there can't be much difference! If you are not commuting too far, the gas motor will seldom run. How could that not be worth the difference right there???

@@kevin6550694 2020 RAV4 hybrid in Canada costs $32,350 + freight/pdi and taxes (on Toyota.ca). RAV4 Prime base model $44,990 + freight/pdi and taxes (my local dealer emailed me prices). Base model Prime $12,550 more then base model, $7550 after $5000 federal rebate. People won't make up that cost in fuel/energy savings over lifespan on the vehicle, not to mention extra cost of much larger battery when eventually needing replacement.

It is also an extremely limited production model that it will be virtually impossible to get any time soon especially outside of Quebec/BC.

James Burrough The issue is supply. They’d sell a million a year in North America if they were available. Until solid state batteries are perfected and the electrical grid is upgraded plug in hybrids are the future.

I have had my Hybrid XLE for a month and am so freakin happy...5.4 litres / 100 km. Toyota forever!! Will wait a few years to get the prime since I did not want to wait a year for a new car.

Adaptivr cruise works very well in stop and go traffic on new RAV4s. I have 2019 RAV4 hybrid and use the auto cruise all the time in traffic. You need to accelerate from a stop and cars can bud in but still great!

@@DUNGSTA You'd be surprised, some fool from my local Toyota dealership actually had the audacity to suggest a $20k markup. When I told him that's like half the MSRP, he said he can go down to $15k but no lower. Needless to say I declined and told him to go shove it up his bumhole!

As per Alex on Autos Prime model handles slightly worse then hybrid model due to added weight. I own 2019 hybrid XSE and like how it handles overal and (I upgraded to 19" wheels and 235/55R19" tires). Softer and smoother then CX5 but definitely more vague handling feel and worse handling over CX5.

We were driving up a mountain.

Electric motors are shockingly efficient, no contest. For example, the energy density needed to drive around 300 miles in a Tesla uses roughly the same amount of energy in about 2 gallons of gas. That being said, electricity is pretty expensive compared to gasoline. So here is a bit of a breakdown: On average, most all electric vehicles get between 3 and 4 miles per KWh. Plug in hybrids are generally a bit worse than this due to having to cart around the dead weight of the engine and other parts needed to make gas cars go, so it is likely closer to 2.5-2.7 ish miles per KWh. Even with that extra inefficiency, if the Rav4 Prime gets about 40 miles of electric range, you can expect the battery to need about 18 KWh to charge. Where I live, electricity is pretty expensive compared to average, so with that absolute worst case you are likely looking at around $3.00 to drive those 40 miles all electric. Of course there are other things to consider, such as significantly less wear and tear on the engine. Electric motors can easily run for a million miles no problem, and they do not care if you are in stop and go traffic or on the highway. Honestly dumping the gas parts entirely and even spending a bit more up front or something like a Tesla Model Y would get a car that is basically a guarantee to outlast any other car by 3x. Electric cars also have almost no maintenance costs, no oil, no transmission, and only about 7 moving parts in the motor. To top it off, 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. In my eyes, that is really the way to go. Toyota has a good idea on their hands for people who don't yet fully grasp the capability of all electric cars, but they are really struggling with bringing even something with this small of a range to market. They simply do not have the manufacturing capacity to handle the battery demands. Tesla is easily 10 years ahead of the game.

David Esposito thank you for the lengthy reply I appreciate it. I’m in an unfortunate part of the world where there is about a 4.5 hour drive to the next city and it gets down to -40 degrees in the winters so a Tesla doesn’t quite cut it, yet. Something like a plug in hybrid for everyday use seems perfect until battery tech gets more capable at really cold temperatures.
