Valentinas interpretations are on an extremly high level. Gaspard de la nuit makes no exception. First movement Ondine is wonderful aerial and transparent. Wonderful pianissimo and you hear every detail. Never heard it in such way. Absolutely fabulous, opened another door for me. Gibet is very athmospheric. I liked it very much. Scarbo, this is piece is hell on earth. Valentina can easily handle it and her interpretion is again very good. However, I'm missing some agressiveness, intensity, bite. It's difficult to explain. Overall a very nice interpretation, nothing wrong. My reccomendation. However, I will always be addicted to Martha Argerich's interpretation from 1975 on Deutsche Grammophon. It's pure magic. Did you know she was peregnant during recording session? Maybe the small but vital difference, who knows...

+Rafael R. - +Rafael R. - You have some of the most intelligent comments here so I will respond to you with a little background in the hopes that you will have a greater appreciation of Valentina's interpretation of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit. Gaspard is derived from the Persian word that means "treasurer" or "keeper of jewels". Gaspard de la Nuit (Treasurer of the Night) is about very dark fantasies from the poetry of French romantic poet Aloysius Bertrand. Ondine is not supposed to be aerial - it is about waking up to the seductive sound of the shimmering sea - and the song of a mermaid named Ondine who came from the sea to seduce a fisherman (and the listener) to the pleasures at the bottom of the sea - It is an invitation that is at once mesmerizing and ominous as interpreted by Lisitsa. When the fisherman declines, you can actually hear the mermaid's pain from being rejected and hear her crazy laughter in the end just before she fades back out into the sea. Le Gibet is not supposed to be atmospheric - rather it is about waking up in the night to hear the tolling of a bell - or what sounds like a distant bell (listen to that consistent quiet clang of the B flat through out the entire piece). When you look out however, you will discover that it is a dead body hanging from a gibet. One can actually interpret the tolling B flat as the sound of the corpse swaying in the wind. Scarbo is about waking up in the middle of the night to find the demon Scarbo standing over you. The narrative is not exactly about aggression - it is about this mischievous demon reappearing and disappearing in the darkness - flitting in and out of the light and casting a frightening shadow against the moon light - It is nightmarish but I would say it is more about fear than aggression for the demon never really attacks - he was just playing and full of mischief - again incredibly interpreted by Valentina. Given the above narrative, I would hope that you would listen and watch her performance again and hear it differently. She is not better or worse than Martha - she just has a different "voice" and point of view. Enjoy.

I have learned by heart Scarbo. It took me a year just to remember the notes, not master. It's sooooo fast I can't never reach the correct speed. Valentina somehow possesses ultra instinct: she made the piece so effortless while I struggle just to keep up with the speed. I really hate that part 3:07-3:42 (hardest part of the piece in my opinion). It is so dizzyingly fast I sweat over the piano 😓

Gaspard de la Nuit (1908) takes it's title from a book of poetry by Aloysius Bertrand (1807-42) published posthumously in 1842. The opening of the book describes its genesis, a fantasy in itself. Bertrand tells of encountering a mysterious indigent who calls himself Gaspard de la Nuit and who leaves behind the manuscript of the book. Upon inquiring after the man in order to return the manuscript, Bertrand is told that the man has returned to hell, for, indeed, he was the devil in disguise. Enjoy.

Valentina, as ever, a revelation in her playing - not simply in the listening, but the watching of her amazing fluidity of movement. Very interesting to observe how she tackles the "tremolo" notes of the opening - not by finger change (such as I have always used), but by a very supple wrist and single finger movement. It's probably something you have to listen to several times. This is my first time listening to it too. Some of my favorite musicians write really bizarre/complex music that is difficult to understand at first but is rife with profound emotions that take you to a mindset you've never experienced before. You see, if it's something you can relate to immediately than your own preconceptions may block the intended imagery of the song. If you're disconnected, you have to sit there and listen closely.
