Damn! Sit that friend who says “classical music is boring” down in front of this performance and let it slap them around a bit. Holy moley! They’re blasting holes in the sheet music by the end of it. I’m exhausted. Loved it. I need to experience this live. Bucket list.

Ravel wrote about this piece "I feel this work a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese waltz, linked in my mind with the impression of a fantastic whirl of destiny.". It was composed at the end of WWI, marking the violent death of the age of waltz.

Before I read your comment I didn't know this was composed at the end of WWI, but it makes sense to me now because there is something very sentimental in parts of La Valse. I'm hoping to learn it for piano solo, but from what I've heard it's a nightmare to play!

@@CLPianoMusic Also of interest is Ravel volunteered as an ambulance and truck driver during World War I. His experience seeing wounded and dying French soldiers coming from the front deeply affected him and this was written after this experience. Extremely few composers have ever been able to deconstruct and transform a dance form so drastically --- in fact it becomes the start of a rather menacing military march at the end. Yet Ravel does not entirely destroy it rather he reveals its beauty while at the very early part of the piece casts the seeds of its destruction (listen carefully to the embellishments at the start to the waltz melody - the drunk chromatic runs are 8 notes against the three quarter beats, already setting up a rhythmic antagonism that leads to the 4/4 of a march at the very end). Stravinsky learned much from both Debussy and Ravel and, likely from this piece, got some thought how much farther he could mess with rhythm that led to his famous pieces such as Sacred du Printemps.

What a fantastic performance (once again!) by this orchestra! It keeps getting better! Conductor's conception and execution of the work better than almost all that I've heard ever. He maintains the initial "sanity" and reservedness superbly. Loved his tempo changes throughout. Bravo Pablo and HR. Return to the podium frequently!!

Beautifully recorded, from the heartbeat pulse of those first notes, tamborines, everything in high fidelity, lots of punch and vigor. The orchestra are fabulous - and under the leadership of the right conductor they make La Valse sparkle - this after the lackluster draggggy gooey version led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada

"La Valse" has never sounded better, but I've been disappointed with the camera work lately. The angles and distances were more agreeable in past years. It's totally subjective of course; it would be interesting to know of others' opinions.
@davidpeake1231
@davidpeake1231 4 жыл бұрын
Point taken - this cameraman/director is clearly not the same person(s) used in previous videos. These are fans of musician/conductor close-ups which I find quite agreeable and thus acceptable. The previous camera people were inclined towards more long range filming particularly of the city and the river. I suspect that the Frankfurt tourism body had requested that. Anyway, it's a splendid orchestra - just enjoy the music.

I agree the sound is exquisite, beautifully recorded. As for camerawork, certainly there are some muddy poorly composed shots like 1:39, and yes some odd angles, but I will say that more times than not (but not always!) they are covering featured musicians at the moments they're playing. Other shots are non-traditional like 3:01 which though unconventional have their own elegance and freshness. Then they're followed by winning shots of the conductor 3:19 then go wide appropriately at 3:24 for the flourishes. But I think you're right overall that it could be improved quite a bit.

Hors sujet total. Réécouter Munch, Bernstein...

I read your comment before listening, and I find this has far more kick than expected, seems pretty snappy and strongly punctuated - and for my money 12:22 it hits those syncopated beats beautifully. My fav is the classic 1955-56 rendition by Charles Munch with Boston Symphony, but I'd rave to see this kind of spirited performance live. Which recording is one that packs the edge?
