[From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia]
Ravi Shankar, (Bengali: রবি শংকর, IPA: [ˈrɔbi ˈʃɔŋkɔr]; 7 April 1920 -- 11 December 2012), his name often preceded by the title Pandit, was an Indian musician who was one of the best-known exponents of the sitar in the second half of the 20th century as well as a composer of Hindustani classical music.
Shankar was born in Varanasi and spent his youth touring Europe and India with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956.
In 1956, he began to tour Europe and the Americas playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison of the Beatles. Shankar engaged Western music by writing concerti for sitar and orchestra and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1986 to 1992 he served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Parliament of India. In 1999, Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. He continued to perform up until the end of his life.

I was there in 1969 and this performance was the peak of the whole festival for me. I was sitting with about 30 people underneath a very large piece of construction plastic, which had trapped a very thick cloud of MJ smoke under it, and the rain poured down on our plastic layer of shelter while Ravi Shankar sat under a small shelter on the stage and played his heart and soul out to us. All the other musicians there acted as if they thought they themselves were gods, but Ravi acted like it was a great honor for him to play for us and like he was just an humble instrument bringing down sacred music from the sky.

@@savagehuman6020 the sitar originates from the late Mughal era, it isn't thousands of years old. It is built in the tradition of the veena, which is much older.

Thank God I saw him at least twice? First with George Harrison & Billy Preston at the Forum near L.A. & I recorded him at U.C.L.A.'s Royce Hall except that I got busted taping in the first set; but I somehow managed to get my equipment back in later to record the second set! I can't remember if I saw him again but I might have since I saw so many shows of all sorts and I most certainly saw him on Tv. at least a few times! Although I was only 10 years old in 1969 and had just moved or was in the process of moving to Oregon at this time from California for my Father to go to graduate school at O.S.U.; however I was definitely into going to concerts, since we all went to see Rare Earth this year or the next which was my first concert and soon I went to Steven Stills by myself before we moved back to Redondo Beach where I went to as many, many concerts as I could. Including most all of the acts the acts at Woodstock and I'm not exaggerating eventually (meaning some not for a long time later) including the Airplane but not Jimi (almost) or Janis! Augy, San Diego
