I have a 96 Caprice with 330,000 miles on it. It still has the original engine and transmission. I've never had an overheating problem and the optispark runs like a fine watch. 99% of the misfiring issues are caused by shorted out spark plug wires and negative battery cable grounding issues. The spark plug wires MUST be routed in the factory holders and 1/4" plastic loom used the entire length to prevent the wires from touching the block and/or shorting out against each other. In 2014, I purchased another low-mileage 96 B4U Caprice. It had misfiring issues that the previous owner/repair shops could not solve. A new set of plug wires and two new O2 sensors and it was good to go. I stole that car dirt cheap because nobody could fix it.

I noticed that about the B body cars, they have far superior cooling systems than the Fbody. I couldn't get mine over 180*F. That in turn lets the oil run cooler, keeps the trans fluid cooler, and makes the car far more reliable.

Thanks for another entertaining and informative video. I've owned my 1994 SS since new, and yes those rear window clips do break even when the car has been garaged it's entire life, but otherwise it's been a good car with a total of 82k mikes as of now.

I agree. The tuning options for the LT1 are basically non existent. The 24x conversions eliminate the opti spark and the tuning issues.

@@316Autos I also totally agree but with the proliferation of running LSx truck motors in the junkyards with complete harnesses , ECM, intakes, fuel rails and the ready availability of LS swap kits. It has become easier and not that much more expensive to do a LS swap. And with an easy peesy cam swap you got one hell of 400+ HP/TQ motor.

I had a 94 9C1, the car had hideous, cold-sweat-break-out power. Everybody guessed that police modified it somehow, but the only thing the dealer noted was a 200 deg. thermostat. The car overheated fast in slow traffic - and then started to go 35-40 mph by itself. I just stepped on the brake time-to-time to slow it down in LA traffic. I never witnessed any power like that before or after in a car. When the transmission failed at 75K, that was the end of it. Dealer overhauled it but they said it can't be done as it was from the factory. The 4L60E transmission is what ruins these cars.

They have monster torque to be sure. I prefer the B body LT1 to the F and Y body cars.
@fastdraw30
@fastdraw30 7 жыл бұрын
I think the B body SS is definitely a classic muscle car..the styling..horsepower..and comfort makes a a contender with some of the best out there even by today's standards. The drivetrain is a moderately dependable setup with issues sure to arise if improperly maintained. This is to be kept in mind when purchasing a 20 year old car of its caliber. With patients and time a well preserved SS is obtainable and definitely worth the extra coin to acquire versus a well driven and meagerly maintained one. Not to brag but my SS is a stellar example of what one would want in this beautiful car.

Mine is definitely a driver, but I am putting her back together. Any 4K+lbs car is going to need bushings and front end work over time, no getting around it. The "new" has worn off for me and I am still very happy with the car, which is unusual for me, so it should tell you how much I like them.
@fastdraw30
@fastdraw30 7 жыл бұрын
JC316 Absolutely...mine was not without its issue upon purchase..I did have to put in a front sway bar end link kit first off..I just had the coolant and transmission services done this weekend..my rear diff was chattering too..I had to change the fluid and add the GM friction modifier back as it was old and the additives had broken down causing the clutches to chatter in tight turns..so even a ultra low mileage car will need attention..I did replace the factory tires as well with a fresh set of hankooks.

The 4L60E is essentially a 700-R4 with electronic control instead of a tv cable pulling on a valve to control valve body pressure. Unfortunately the 700-R4 had to run the gamut of a huge lineup of cars and perform equally well in all of them, from pony cars to pickup trucks. And as soon as they released the 4L60E, just more electronic shit to fuck up instantly, especially since the engine's computer now controls the transmission, instead of the transmission controlling itself.

I've learned on the ignition system, to only replace the Opti with a AcDelco factory reman Opti when it goes out. Do not get a knock off Mallory or MSD pos opti. and the ignition wires don't have to be routed to factory nightmare locations. Just make sure the new wires are routed and kept away from the manifolds. And I've heard that the LT1s don't like aftermarket plugs, even though NGK iridiums are an excellent choice for other cars, these only like to run Delcos.

So, I bought my 1995 Impala ss new. It was $25,500 with tax. it currently has 200,000 miles and runs strong. For years I would use the car all day, starting and stopping. It was a workhorse, I have yet to see one for sale with a bad engine. They usually have 200 too 300k and they are still going. My transmission is original. The biggest problems I had was when it was new was the one off BF Goodrich soft compound z rated tires. In 1995 the selection of tires was not like it is now. These tires would wear out quick and get tons of punctures. The cost for a new one..$254. I think I had about 15 plugs in one back tire. And the second biggest problem was a tune up- $1000. They had to take the whole front of the engine off... I got around this by just telling them to change the opti-spark...for some reason this was only a 4 hour job cutting the price to $400. The whole reverse flow colent system is shit.....the water pump is above the opti-spark. so when that went, it would leak out of the weep hole right on to the opti-spark..The guy who designed this iron block Lt-1 which is not the same as the corvette LT-1 said they bench tested the iron heads and they flowed better than the aluminum heads. He said the car was really putting out 300 horse but GM would not let them rate it same as the vette and they thought it would scare off older buyers This would explain how they got one to go 6.6 seconds in the 0-60 while weighing 4200 pounds plus driver..Yeah, the gauge cluster wears out, nylon clips in the electric windows wear out and when new, the parts where expensive. Which is kind of interesting because these were fleet cars. But I still love it and have started driving it every day again.

That's awesome man. I would have loved to owned one new off the lot. Got the next best thing in the form of a 1 owner, 17K mile 96. I believe the power ratings are closer to 300, I've had all versions of the LT1 and the B body feels stronger than the F and Y cars.

nice looking impala, just a few more years and it will be a classic. I have a 96 9c1 caprice, actually prefer it to my old impala because the 9c1's were built with heavier duty parts on about everything that matters. Like the look of the impala a bit more, but the 9c1's last forever. I even have stab proof seats from the factory lol. The trick is to look for a 9c1 from a small town police department, they have all the maintenance records but never install any of the cage... gotta love clean stock interiors

Good review of this car. One time bomb I read about was some thing to do with the rear axle seals. Seems the factory ones didn't have some way for the lub to flow properly....missing holes or something in the seal or gasket. I don't remember exactly. That was an urban legend only. The real problem will be the 4L60E transmission. It WILL go out at 70-80K miles, and the dealer can't fix it properly. After that the car is crap. Thats why they sell them on ebay before the dreaded 60K miles.
@colinw7205

@́ ' Do a google or better yet check impalassforum.com. There was a company that sold T56 manual transmission conversion kits for the B-Body. I think they were called Three Pedals. You could do a 4L80e conversion. Clear Image Automotive used to sell crossmembers for the conversion. But the 4L80e isn't recommended unless you putting out serious HP/TQ like 450+ HP. But usually a good performance transmission shop can rebuild the 4L60e in their sleep with good aftermarket parts from folks like Sonnax. Especially the sunshell.

I don't know why you are so put off on the LT1 engine. I own 3 LT1 powered GM sedans now, and I have NEVER had an issue with any one of them. They do not leak, they do not run hot at ALL, and they are EASY to work on, as is ANY GM small block....as rouge war stated IF you know what you are doing. Don't know what was going on with your Corvette, but every LT1 I have ever come into contact with (and I have seen a lot of them over the years) were nothing shy of reliable. If you are fortunate enough to own a Roadmaster, Caprice, or Fleetwood that has the coveted tow package, then yes, you do get some of the same suspension upgrades, and performance options that the C91 Caprice's had. My Caprice with the tow package has the bigger front and rear sway bars, big breaks, bigger ball joints, transmission cooler, 3.42 posi (that is where your increased acceleration comes from), 140 amp alternator, mechanical fan with shroud, and a few other odd and ends that the majority of the other cars didn't have (all factory options as verified by the build sticker inside the trunk). The SS Impala and C91 Caprice are the ONLY 2 options in 4 door sedans with the LT1 that were not speed limited to 125 mph. That is why those two came with the Z speed rated tires from the factory because they were capable of achieving 155 MPH. There are several bolt on options to increase horsepower on these engines, while still using the factory ECM. Heads, upgraded throttle body, exhaust, upgraded cam, and a good set of plugs/wires...and you got yourself a motor that will propel these 4200 pound cars down the road with as much horsepower and torque a 2012-2015 Chevy SS has, if not more. The only issue I have with the distributor system is its location under the water pump weep hole. Get it wet, and you might as well throw it away and buy a new one. (complete distributors can now be had for these things for as little as $60 on Amazon) Other than that, it performs well....just make sure to replace your water pump every 60,000 miles, regardless if it needs it or not. Someone said in an earlier post, you have to maintain these cars and keep them in good working order. I suppose that is the key to owning any car. Take care of it and it will take care of you. Sorry, I find these cars (and engines) to be durable, reliable, comfortable, good lookers, and the SS Impala in particular to be a vehicle not only worth owning, but a classic that will only start going up in value. I don't think it is ever going to exceed the value of an Olds 442, or 70 Chevelle SS; however, I believe they are an excellent choice into classic car ownership with a promise of a good return.
@316Autos
@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
I've had a ton of problems with the LT1 in the Fbody cars and the C4 corvette, but the B body doesn't seem to suffer from the same issues. A lot of the problem comes from heat, and the B body has a larger radiator and a larger engine bay to handle the heat. There are no decent tuners for the LT1 any more, so upgrades are harder to implement.

@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
I think there is a resistor that fixes the 96 odometer. My door pull cups were broken as well, I use this stuff called Marine Tex, it's a long cure time epoxy, but it's incredibly strong once it dries. LS swap is doable, but there are no kits. You will have to trim the engine cross member a little to clear the oil pan, and then either notch it for the A/C or get a relocation bracket.

Just did a search on impala ss and found ya...I've Owned a 95 Impala ss dggm and am convinced it's the best year to own, but no obd2 and only 2 02 sensors as the 96 has 4...Ouch! As of now I own a 95 Caprice 9C1-police model with I wonder if you know about the narrower rear end? I threw in what you talked about a t56 6 speed manual with 373 gears and aluminum driveshaft...I'm definitely over 400 ponies and am gonna do a ltcc ignition upgrade to really not have to count on the opti anymore. Must have went through about 20 optisparks over the years. Started rebuilding em myself after 10...I'll definitely sub ya cause you know what you're talkin about. If ya could get a better mic your vids would hear better, but I know wrenchin budgets...lol

The 9C1 caprice uses the narrow axle and the Impala SS uses the wider one. Not entirely sure what the reason is behind this.. Nice with the T-56 swap, part of me really wants to do it to mine, but the purist in me says not to. Might have to find a clone one day. I hadn't heard of the LTCC ignition, I always heard about the EFI 24X, which is far more expensive. Going to be getting a new camera with external mic input right after the holidays. I have a bunch of reviews waiting to be shot, but I want to wait for the better camera. Thanks for the sub!

After 150k miles the transmission die 🤔🤔. That's why Japan Cars are better. I love 94-96s Impalas but bad news the Transmission die. I have a Standard Transmission a Mazda B2200 ES5 1987 and I have the same transmission and the same motor only change one time the clutch. The speed meter and the tachometer not work, and the last tachometer have a mark 235000k miles and steel running my pickup and steel look good. I have to invest in the Bodywork. @́ ' That's got to be your tires or how the suspension is set up. I've got one right now with an LS1, manual transmission, and 4.56 gears and it grips fine on wet roads. You're not going to be racing, but I'm not scared of wet roads either.
@316Autos
@316Autos 3 жыл бұрын
@́ ' There's a lot of tires in that series, but I am guessing it's their sticky summer tire, which won't do well in cold, wet conditions. As for the suspension comment, I am far from an expert on setting it up, but basically anything you do to stiffen it will increase how quickly the weight transfers, which will affect how it handles in the rain. Combine a LOT of low end torque with a shorter rear end gear, a summer tire, and a performance oriented suspension and you get bad wet weather handling. The tires will be the biggest factor by far.

god do you really think the LT1 is that bad? if you take care of them they hold together better then allot of other engines. if i am cruising and there is air flowing through the radiator my LT1 camaro runs cool about 170 consistently. yes GM did program the fans at too high of a temp and i dont know why. sitting in traffic it gets too hot for my liking. 230K on my car no rod bearing or head gasket failure. the dexcool, long gone from my car i dont trust that crap at all. overall i dont think its a bad engine if you understand it some. yes opti-spark is crap. for fuck sake GM could have used a waste spark ignition like a 3800 from the same time period. it would have been much much better. who ever engineered the opti should have been shot and then who ever thought they should mount the damn thing behind the water pump should be tortured to death.

please explain why i dont seem to have that problem? better maintenance? do i not beat the snot out of my car? i will tell you that i never overheat it. the old 2.2 cavalier engine while a good engine, i have done a few of those head gaskets. never had a problem with the LT1, of course i dont know if someone else did. i have driven this car 30K miles so far no MAJOR problems. it might help my car's cause that 80% of my driving is done on back country roads so the car is almost always moving. im not driving stop and go much so the car never really gets hot often. things i had to replace: -complete ignition including opti, wires, plugs, icm, and coil -every bushing in the suspension was toast. front control arm bushings were beyond bad. just bought a energy suspension kit and did it all -shocks/struts -drivers side window switch. siliconed that shit back together. that switch bezel popping out, i had enough of that -motor mounts toast, replaced with poly inserts a fun job but permanent repair. not to expensive either -brakes and rotors front and back but this is to be expected -intake gasket oil leak. rear leaked so bad where the block meets the intake (rtv seal) everytime you shut the engine off your would get a cloud of smoke as the oil burned off on the hot exhaust -valve cover gasket -fuel pump -rear hatch electric release no major problems just a bunch of little annoying shit that is pretty much expected on a car that's 21 years old, has 200K miles on it, and has had obvious neglect. rockauto is my friend, to hell with retail. the car has been reliable for quite some time now. i could put in the key in it and drive it to california and not think twice about it. this car is daily driven all summer long

perhaps the cars you had the bad luck of buying were abused and trashed examples. were any of them still running dexcool because that stuff is known shit. i always thought my LT1 runs cooler then my L05 in my 89 camaro did. yes i know the camaro never came with an L05, i put it in there along with better heads, bored throttle body, and a better cam, larger injectors, different fuel pump, and different ECM prom. anyways i also like the dry intake. there is ZERO risk of transferring coolant into the oil via the intake, like physically impossible. when i had to replace the intake (oil leak) and i did not have to remove the coolant, i liked that. i really dont like draining antifreeze its a pain in the ass. there is also the redundancy the system offers. we bought know its driven from the back with a couple. if the accesory drive belt fails the LT1 will not overheat. you can literally drive it till its out of battery power and limp home. good luck doing that with ANY other car.

Well you got one thing right as these cars are very UGLY looking!! Even my parents can't stand the looks of these cars or the other similar looking cars of the 90's era. There were plenty of other family 4 door luxury cars that were sportier, better looking and just as powerful than these.

I love the looks of the Impala, but I disliked the Caprice. True that they didn't have the latest technology of the times, but the mechanic in me says there is less stuff to break. I've worked on the BMW, cadiilac, and Lexus cars from this era and most of them are electrical nightmares now, especially the HVAC stuff. Part of me is a minimalist, I like the simplicity of the car... Then my shirt rides up and my back touches cold leather I want my damned heated seats.

@starxlr7863 7 жыл бұрын
JC316 Honestly its the same car and neither one is good looking to me. They just made the impala edition just a little more sporty looking but just made it more odd and terrible. At the time it came out it was very outdated and old. But even you took notice at how cheaply made the car is. Much of the car is plastic and cheap made materials right down to the leather used inside. Being a minimalist is not a bad thing at all, but it is nice to have those countless options like heated memory seats and automatic door locks and auto dimming rear view mirrors. I know that feeling every time i get inside either my 00 STS or 05 Deville. And with likely most of the newer cars with the options and big engines, its just something that we need to learn and deal with when something needs serviced or repaired. The oldest car that I currently have is a 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood. Its a very simple car to work on and yet very advanced in the options that it has. It really puts these big ugly Caprice, Impala and Fleetwood cars to shame and not to mention both quality and style.
@316Autos
@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
The Impala Style is definitely a love it or hate it affair. The material quality is no joke, I just picked up a 17K mile 96 SS and the plastic creaks as bad as my 94. I've never been a fan of replacing cable driven stuff with electronic stuff, but it's the price that you pay. My parents have a 1957 Coupe Deville, and yeah those cars were incredible. I have a 69 Buick Lesabre convertible and underneath it's skin, it's basically the Impala SS.

JC316 Yeah I guess I'm in the hate group for these cars here. Just don't like the body style at all. I think GM had some much better and nicer family sedans at the time all better than this. Nice you have a 69 Buick convertible. I just recently sold a 1969 Cadillac Deville convertible myself. I enjoy the 61 Cadillac a lot more myself as does my family. The body's themselves were shared among several GM models which is why underneath it was the exact same as the Chevy Impala. The body's were built at the Fisher plant and then dispersed to the various GM plants. It's pretty neat how it was when Fisher was still around.
