What’s the difference between a hippo and a zippo? One is really heavy and the other is a little lighter.

Nice to see this knife again, you don't see them very often. I happen to have the birch version and the black micarta version by Wilkinson and also the 25th anniversary version No. 87, all three are still unused.

Useful tips there Ben, thanks for sharing. I've an Alan Wood Woodlore knife that would benefit from a bit of restoration like that. I've already got one of those brilliant blocks, from your shop, so it's time to give it a go!

The woodlore knife is my dream knife but I am happy with my mora atm till I get more exspirenced with sharpening and knife care... Could you recommend a cheeper but still high quality woodlore style knife at around the £100-150 mark ? (Preferably a UK based company)

Also. I was brought up to went dry in one direction. Change to a finer grit and go at 90*s until previous scratches are all gone. Change to a finer grit, 90*s and repeat, And repeat.
@BenOrford
@BenOrford 3 жыл бұрын
If the knife didn’t have the handle on then that’s a good idea but if you did that you would struggle to get those 90 degree scratches out, like on this knife. In this instance it’s best to just stay sanding in the same scratch pattern direction 👍

Hi Ben, thanks for another great video. Would that renaissance wax be ok to protect a ferro rod? I've lost a couple to corrosion.
@BenOrford
@BenOrford 3 жыл бұрын
I would say it would be ok. Also a good thing to do is if you only use one side then applying some clear lacquer would be god too.

What speed does buffer run at? I am wanting to convert an old metal angle grinder but it runs about 3000rpm, is that to fast?

What would happen if you used lapping paste or valve grinding paste in light oil to clean a tarnished blade? I saw some beautifully polished valves done recently using that. Has it any place in blade restoration?
@BenOrford
@BenOrford 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely you can use that. You do have to be a little careful near lighter handle materials though as can make them look a real mess. Perhaps some masking tape on the handle would help. I would still say use the paper or Gary flex first and the final finish the lapping past could work well 👍

More of a general question than a knife one, Ben. A friend was oiling her wooden food chopping board with coconut oil. I’d never heard anyone use or recommend that. Ever used it yourself? Is it one of the oils that is likely to go rancid in time, or would you guess it might be ok?

What wax or rust protector do you suggest for a knife that will be used for food prep?
@BenOrford
@BenOrford 3 жыл бұрын
Well I would probably use something that is more natural with a high beeswax content, for the blade though on carbon steels you might be best to force a patina on the steel to protect it by using mustard or cutting some fruit with it. When the steel has oxidised you can then just give it a wipe with some oil after washing. Hope that helps👍

Aegis has a product called EDCi which i find to be a great product. It cleans the blade as well as protecting it and it is safe to use on a food prep knife blade. There is a few places here in Canada where I can get it but I think it is an American product. I may be mistaken but I think you can order it on Amazon as well. Hope this helps you as I've been using it for half a year and it seems a good product. From Canada 🇨🇦...stay safe.

@@bobhabsolute4995 I believe I bought it from Aegis Solutions in the US. I couldn't find it here in Canada. I do wish one of our knife companies like Warriors and Wonders would pick it up. For me it works really well and you literally spray on, rub it carefully over the blade and wipe off. I hope this helps you out.

@18:50 could you elaborate what you mean using ammonia to prevent rust? ammonia is corrosive.. thank you
@lesstraveledpath
@lesstraveledpath 2 жыл бұрын
I am unsure of the chemistry...but I can confirm the effect. Using Windex with "ammonia-d" as the lubricant (as compared to water) for hand sanding does prevent rust on 1080/1084 and O1 tool steels.
