@@mohamedsulaman831 Wasn't because he was old and slow, he was a shit ref long before that. It's Tony Perez, same ref who let Gerry Cooney tee off on Kenny Norton, as Kenny Norton was basically out on his feet hanging/sitting in the bottom rope. Like Norton was just sitting there, arms hanging down, all stiff and WIDE EYED (shell shocked/knocked out with his eyes open), and Cooney was able to really load up on his punches, Cooney was already a fearsome puncher as it.. Watch that knockout, it's imo even worse than this one, but this knockout is also one of the most brutal ones.

Also the same ref that let David Tua take John Ruiz's head off with a totally free left hook after Ruiz was already out cold. I swear he was just scared to get too close when reffing heavyweights.

I don't think he was underrated. The truth is, he's been lucky mother nature gave him such a good chin (this is not something you can improve with training, at least not that much). Tommy was a better fighter and that's what you can see for the first 3 rounds imo. But Tommy needed the fights to be short. If you can survive his shots for 3/4 rounds (and not many could), well, you had your chance because stamina was not his thing. In a way, Tyson was the same. Bell => Hyper shot in the face as soon as the fight start => Ko.

Tommy was a very intense fighter, who threw everything into almost every punch. There wasn't much of a feeling out process nor any boxing for points. It was a race to knock out every opponent in as little time as possible. This takes a lot out of a fighter very quickly, and though Tommy was better than most at this particular strategy, it didn't always work out in his favor. Mercer had a wrecking ball for a head, and therefore Tommy should have saved some energy and fought for the decision, just like he would go on to do against Foreman.

Ironically this was the best Morrison ever looked imo. He was such a fucking animal in those early rounds. His punches were so fast and precise, with nasty power. If you asked me to create a Heavyweight boxer, everything from his look to his abilities/attributes, to his fighting style, I would draw up something close to Morrison. He was a hell of a specimen. But his downfall was and always had been his lack of stamina and his chin. A lot of fellow Morrison fans argue that he had a solid chin, but it wasn't very good. There were times where he would take a decent punch and keep on kicking, but he also had a tendency to get caught with 1 solid punch and completely lose his legs. Having your gas tank drained doesn't help matters, and his defense seemed to get worse the more gassed he got, but plenty of times he would get caught and dropped or hurt badly at the least in the first round. Can't blame him being gassed on all of them. All in all, I give Morrison a B+ rating. When I think of Morrison I think of a guy who had the power and offense to be able to bang with and KO anybody, but in the back of my mind I was always waiting on and expecting him to gas out and to eventually get caught with a solid shot that would get him in serious trouble and in jeopardy of being taken out. But when you think about his virus, and his partying and lack of discipline in his personal life, what he accomplished is fuckin AMAZING. if you look up symptoms of HIV, lack of energy and fatigue are your top few symptoms. He mom has reported he knew about the virus since 1989, he turned pro in 1988.

Midway through the 3rd rd Tommy had Mercer in the corner and was doing work on him. I feel like if he would have went for broke right there he had a real chance.

I forgot just how good of a fighter Tommy Morrison actually was. Guess his lack of personal responsibility screwed it all up for him. I counted 15 solid punches he took in the course of going down, it's painful to watch. When you get hit that hard, your whole head goes numb, he didn't feel a thing after about the fourth hit, he's lucky he survived. RIP Duke

The first punches hurt though I remember getting caught with an uppercut in sparring against the ropes it was like an instant severe headache, these guys are brave. You are right he's lucky to survive too like you said also

I always remember how late Mercer got into boxing. I think he was like 27 or something! And look what he was able to accomplish. Inspirational.

and Morrison thought: I can beat this old guy with one of my hands tied; I don't even know why the heck they call him merciless Mercer. Well, Morrison discovered it the hard, hard, way.

I remember this fight. It was interesting learning about Tommy's life style in the 30 for 30. He was not ready for this fight at all. I always rooted for Ray.

I think in the entire history of boxing the most brutal knockout is either this one of Morrison or Gatti vs. Joey Gamache. Geez that one was horrible too.
