Ray Wylie, master story teller. His conversation with the devil is another one. He has influenced multiple Texas/Oklahoma “Red Dirt” artists. BTW Jame McMurtry penned this one, another great story teller. Guy Clark’s “The Guitar” would be a good story as well. Happy Trails from Texas. USAF ‘77-‘85 SIGINT.

Legend has it that when Ray covered this he said that “I’m gonna do it the way it was supposed to be done!” Personally I prefers Rays version.

Ray Wylie Hubbard is awesome. That song was written by James McMurtry. Another of Ray’s songs you should check out is Mother Blues. It’s autobiographical. He has many great songs.

Love this version, but check out the dude who wrote this song. Larry McMurty. His father was larry mcmurtry author of the famous lonesome dove novels. Thats why the story is so good haha

I’m related to Ray and my mom said she remembered them always giving her cherry coke as a kid on road trips and it would always make her fall asleep and she heard this song for the first time and was in shock

Years and years ago my dad went to a club Ray Wylie was playing at, the show ended, short time later he left the club and Ray was leaning up against my dad's car smokin weed and talking with some other dudes. My dad came up and smoked with them, then Ray left and my dad went home, still talks fondly about it to this day, lol.

Just so you know, Billy, the Choctaw are a Native American tribe, and it's pronounced "Chock-taw" - they're a very proud people, so don't make the mistake of letting them hear you mispronounce their tribe's name! XD I made the mistake once and had one (who was admittedly racist) threaten to kill me for it.
