I use the stern pry whenever I need a powerful steering stroke at the rear of the canoe. Generally I will mix it with a short J.

Another excellent demo Ray, thanks. The slow motion view is really helpful in seeing exactly how the stroke works.

Glad it was helpful! Useful feedback as this is the first time I have used slowmo. It really ties to how I demonstrate as a coach, first give a full speed demo so that folk grasp the overall picture and then do a slower version with a breakdown. But importantly they need to see it at speed first so the first impression impacts their learning.

Another top video Ray, nice touch at the end showing and explaining where and why you plant your paddle blade more forward than in a j. 👍😁🛶

Hi ray , I dare say this stroke could also be used as a more aggressive straightening stroke - with not so much power ( speed ) should the need arise , just a thought 👍🛶

Absolutely. All of these things can be done at different tempos. Variation is the key.

And there’s me thinking that stroke was a frowned upon thing. But I was I think doing more of a goon/Canadian stroke- a J with the thumb up, which sometimes just feels more comfortable especially after a while of paddling.

Certainly a very legitimate stroke when you need it. Not as smooth as a J though as the power/steer transfer is not as efficient. Have fun with it
