I think one thing that kinda annoyed is the lack of street exploration. now you are probably thinking "why would you want to walk the streets in a game about parkour" because their is no sense of verticality when the streets below are essentially just spikes from Sonic painted up all pretty. It also makes clambering up a skyscraper all that more exciting.
@KingLulzington7 жыл бұрын
Regan Huitema I agree entirely. I was really hoping for a ground level or street area bigger than Charter Hill. It would have humbled you on the ground and made you feel like a god on the rooftops when you see the difference.
@HugoStiglitz886 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. There was a couple areas you could get to street level and below though
@dyslexicstoner24086 жыл бұрын
That would be cool but it will be a long time until the experience is actually valuable and rewarding. Waiting until the technology catches up for it to be done right. For her to explore the streets I'd think you should be able to scale and go inside every building or else it's just kind of a waste. But games are nowhere near that right now
@TheJadedJames6 жыл бұрын
The linear sections are one thing. But I think adding more street sections to the open world may have risked it getting too large. Faith isn't Peter Parker. There is only so much space they can render for your character to traverse quickly. Your character would lose their advantage to KSec on a flat plane.
@thebiggeridiot6 жыл бұрын
@Regan Huitema the other thing is because you are restricted to roof tops, it meant you took the same route over and over. i'd suggest you play dying light, i feel it did an open world first person parkour game better than this because you truly do get a sense of freedom and mobility in both the slums and the more built up town presented in the game.

I played this game for sooo many hours, just running around the City, trying to perfect my traversal skills in the city... I also liked replaying missions to find faster ways through them. Ill also say that the entire city felt incredibly cold. It was pretty, yes, but there was not a single place that to me looked like a human would enjoy living in it. Maybe thats the point.
@SSaNNEE1003 жыл бұрын
I think it's the point. To make the city look so artificial it paints that dystopian feeling over it. Everything looks shiny and elegant but it lacks the real life and real human emotions to rise against that artificial way of life. The lack of trees also helps to create this. If you have found that one easter egg at Benefactor mission where you climb the Anansi tower, the text says "the last tree in the city :(" and a bamboo tree next to it, it really made me realize how the lack of GREEN trees affects the aritificial look significantly. I also love just finding out of bounds areas, doing missions with faster routes and without messing up my momentum, or even replaying the game. Cutsecenes are very beautiful in this game if yall remember this was made with the infamous Frostbite engine that killed Mass Effect Andromeda and its character models completely. DICE really knows how to utilize visually the Frostbite engine.

So, replace the current barebones melee combat system with an assassination system? Maybe make direct combat almost impossible, so that the challenge is squarely focused on discovering routes to infiltrate a location and take the enemy by surprise from an unexpected angle? I could 100% get on board with that.

What about replacing the counter attacks in dishonored with the acrobatic finishers faith performs in this game (only in first person and with a sword) for example, one of them would be Corvo, Emily, or Daud rolling over a guard, ripping their sword out of their hand and slashing the guards head with it. My biggest problem with Mirror's Edge: Catalyst was in my opinion DICE's decision to put a large population on the rooftops of the city. What made me love the original was this "You vs The City" feeling it gave out. I felt alone and traversing the edge of towers was what made my personal experience with the game great. Like Journey I only met a few allies/foes along my linear path only to quickly be placed in desolation. I miss those moments.
@batt3ryac1d4 жыл бұрын
With the computing power available now they could make the streets below lively and populated which would add to that feeling disconnected too.

I honestly believe DICE took away from the original and added something completely different which seems to have backfired on them. And in the process might have put the series on hold.

Im guessing what the OP meant was that Raycevick thoroughly played and did research on the game and came to his conclusion through said facts and his experience with Mirror's Edge and with the medium of video games as a whole. Very few times does he give an opinion on the game; one example being when he said he would recommend buying the game for $15 dollars at most. Catalyst isn't a bad game, it just became so much more than the original's vision and the creators struggled to live up to that. Also, open worlds harm far more games than they help, example being here. I'm sick of companies chasing "open world" as if it's the pinnacle of video games, it isn't and often times they sacrifice focus and mission design for large, vapid spaces devoid of substantially anything. Awful trend and I can't wait for it to go away. For every Witcher 3, there's 5 ME: Catalyst's. Bigger is rarely better in video games.

Catalyst has... rooftops... more rooftops... rooftops of a rich neighborhood, one construction site... one building with an engaging interior... that's it. I agree with a most of what you're saying, but Faith hugging her sister in the first Mirror's Edge is in fact a very strong moment for the player, since s/he's with her from a first-person perspective. Those two scenes created a huge emotional impact for me and thus one of the strongest connections I ever felt to a video game character. Game and story rarely came together as strongly as in those moments - an achievement I feel has been widely overlooked. Not just looking at another character, but instead touching* her/him is a tool used far too rarely in games. * And I'm not talking about handing or receiving resources/rewards/rocket launchers. :)

Totally disconnected me from Faith and seemed extremely contrary to her own character. Like seriously? You infiltrate a secret underground mind control facility, get out alive, then just give up? When you have a way to win? You explained it perfectly. Overall, I loved the game and thought it was a good improvement from the last game. Wish it could've done better.

Mirrors Edge is one of the series that always had the potential to be in the hall of fame of all time gaming. The background story combined with its visuals could have made a turly amazing and unique experience in gaming. Of course additionally with its first person parcour mechanics. For me personally the story was improved in Catalyst over the first game but was so hard to follow because of so much exposition being cramped into it. With a focus on either Faith Sister or the Big Evil Corporation it would have gotten the focus necessary to engage with the Narrative. Both together made an ending that effectively did not impact either the characters or the world. All of them are where they were before. Both Games in the Series failed to show the world of Mirrors Edge in an interesting engaging way. In both games you never meet npcs other than plot characters or enemies. It is a similar mistake Fallout 76 made with taking away all the npcs. I really want to see an entry in the series that shifts the focus of the game on its first person mechanics and the story/world, while ignoring flashy extra tick boxes like having an open world and such.

Watched Whitelight's new "Mirror's Edge...12 years later" and remembered this video existed. It has now been 4 years. Time flies

Now that he's mentioned Crackdown in this, I'd love to see him do a video about Crackdown 11 years later.

i would say you should have a look at dying light, playing right now and the movement works a treat in it's 3 open wold sections

As someone who loves Mirror's Edge, I feel like most people have been a little harsh against it. You however did an amazing job at analyzing it, hitting on both its weak and strong points. Great job, you've earned yourself yet another subscriber!

I preordered this. :( I paid $65 for this. I like the game but it didn't live up to my expectations. Feels unfinished. But I'm still playing it to this day

KingLulzington you said how I feel perfectly. ME1 is in my top 5 favorite games of last gen so I was very hyped for this game and pre ordered it. I like it still but i felt disappointed once I finished it.

If you're still playing it after several years then I think you got your money's worth.

This is one of the best games in this Gen to me. It was totally underrated, nobody understood, that the open world concept really suited the game and worked for vanishing the menu stuff. It surpassed the first Mirrors Edge, made things better and played even better thanks to 60 fps

The biggest misstep is not including the pursuit cops from the first one in some way, especially with the open world. I couldn't believe that the sentinel was the last enemy type.

Another gripe of mine is a good chunk of the story is hidden behind the collectibles as well as external material. Literally the game tells you if you want to find out why she was in juvie you have to read some comic. There’s so many things that we the players are expected to have prior knowledge of when so much of it is briefly touched.

Amazing game! Very Smooth and Flowy Parkour unlike Dying Light which has 95% less moves and animations, and feels as stiff as an cardboard, Bought MEC on both PC and PS4 and no regrets! If it only had Multiplayer! just imagine exploring the amazing open world with your buddies as the sun is setting!

This is probably the best review of Catalyst I've seen. It's well written and Raycevick is clearly in love with the game's amazing movement mechanics, as any clever gamer should be. All in all I loved Catalyst only a little less than how much I loved Mirror's Edge (and I totally loved that game), but it's flaws are so self-evident they hurt. I still sometimes reinstall both games just to feel the sound of Faith shoes on gravel and concrete and the sheer exhilaration of a nearly missed jump.
