I know, the game doesn't handle it perfectly because it doesn't tell you when it updates and it's hidden behind an obscure button press (or hold). It does add so much to the game once you know it's there though.

This is exactly the kind of video I was expecting for a game like Rayman 2 - I'm so glad I've stumbled upon this! There were so many things I loved about your analysis but I especially appreciated how you took time to delve into the more intimate and personal aspects of the game. The mention of the dicotomy/clear opposition between nature and machine was very much needed, as I feel like it tends to fly over people's heads very easily! It may not be as subtle but as someone who owned this game as a child I think it was clear on a very superficial level but once you grow up and get in touch with the dynamics of the world (the bad ones especially) this kind of symbolism is not as superficial anymore and becomes extremely effective instead! I also very much loved how you noticed that this is a shared experience in-universe! The game does a great job at making you feel like the hero of the story while simultaneously remind you that you're not alone in this journey - you have friends who will help you and that are fighting their own battles to survive an invasion. No matter how far away you stray, there's always gonna be someone who got your back and will possibly help you through the various stages! And that directly ties up to the beautiful way you wrapped up the video and how important it was that this world could be saved

Thanks a lot mate :D I'm glad you like it, I was actually worried that I was being to generic at points - this is quite validating to the contrary. Yeah the Cave of Bad Dreams was something I had to think about a lot, I always thought it was really good but 'fear' was never really what I was getting from it. At some point it just hit me that the take away I was getting is that fear alone is only as strong as you let it be (whether that be by design or happy coincidence). Now the Desert of the Knaaren on the other hand, that one is scary - and possibly my favourite world in the whole franchise. And yes, a Rayman 3 video should be incoming. p.s. response :P - I don't want it to sound like I this Revolution is worse than TGE - I kinda think it breaks even really which is why I took the time to point out one positive and one negative. I'd agree that one thing in it's favour is that they touched up a lot of what felt rushed in the late game, it deserves a lot of credit for that.

@@lovelyday2174definitely agree with you on the cave of bad dreams, fear was definitely a component of it but it wasn't all that there was, and maybe that's also why it was so fascinating to explore - like it's definitely childish in a way that they represented it but it managed to be somewhat effective - Can't wait for that Rayman 3 essay!

90s and earlt 2000s had a lot of dark yet kid friendly games. Medievil and Oddworld are some other examples i can think of. Overall, really good analysis.
@lovelyday2174
@lovelyday2174 10 ай бұрын
Thanks mate :). Yeah that's a fair point, Rayman 2 doesn't really look dark at all compared to some. Might be that something of that outside the industry made the tone appealing to the developers or it was just a step in mainstream games maturing. Not that their weren't games for older people in the 90s but I think the wider perception was only just starting to broaden around this time.

Just a heads up, the Robot Pirates creation was actually that they originated as a nightmare from the world's God, Polokus. They aren't intergalactic, they are essentially the nightmare demons of a God.
@lovelyday2174
@lovelyday2174 8 ай бұрын
I don't know - from the in game lore/manual it seems to imply to me that they came from elsewhere, I think the nightmares of the world are things like the skeleton chickens or evil catapillers you encounter throughout the game. Polokus's reach is vast so it's still possible that they still ultimately came from him. With that in mind, upon rereading the lums lore - I think I got his creation backwards - he was born of the lums rather than being their creator himself. Ops

@@lovelyday2174 The Zombie chickens are actually explained in the manual, the presence of the Pirates freaked out the normal chickens so much they started laying eggs that hatched the Zombie Chickens.
@lovelyday2174
@lovelyday2174 8 ай бұрын
Ah you're right - I just double checked that. Yeah - I suppose that only leaves the pirates to be the nightmares then.

I have said it before on other games, but rayman 2 between its various versions had all the ideas it needed to be one of the greatest. Let's dream, in this era of great platformer remakes, that we get a version of the game that combines the best ideas of great escape and revolution
@lovelyday2174

Absolutely agree with that, I'm very on the fence about which is better overall (of the 2 I've played). But a blend of both would make something incredible.

Really well done. The PlayStation 1 version of Rayman 2: The Great Escape is also a good port although it not only cuts down mini games, but also cut down chunks and chunks of levels.

What the world was like we do know, from the previous game
@lovelyday2174
@lovelyday2174 8 ай бұрын
Somewhat, but I think there's a few layers to why I don't accept that. We still hardly saw the world before Mr Dark's schemes took over for one, and there is a dubious sense of how the world's of the two games relate to each other to say the least (Rayman himself is the only real common ground). Furthermore, there's an argument to be had that asking people to play another game to grasp the context is unreasonable. Still, I stand by that Rayman 2 doesn't really need it.

I've been playing this recently and found it sooooo difficult. (I've completed both Origins and Legends btw). I can see the charm but controls (camera especially) made me angry. If your game got poor controls why on earth to reuse bad mechanics again and again? It's not fun. Blueberry and running rocket sessions were so uncomfortable, didn't enjoy at all. Some things were well executed but not controls...
@lovelyday2174
@lovelyday2174 Жыл бұрын
That's very fair - while reusing the mechanics is part of what 'settles' them into the feeling of the game - the counterpoint to that is if they don't work to begin with then your just making us put up with pain for longer. While I obviously disagree that the controls are 'bad', there is certainly polishing to be had. The camera is certainly the most aged element, I'll agree with that. The controls were very good for the time, not many would argue that but it's also very fair to point out that that time was over 2 decades ago now - and maybe my nostolgia is holding them up a little

@@lovelyday2174 For the time they might have been very good ) However if to take some blueberry stages, where you simply can't shoot in the direction you would like, because of the way game restricts you. If to take Legends\Origins I can't remember many times where I made a mistake because of controls. If there were mistakes 99% of those were because I pressed too soon\late, etc. Here in The great escape, so many times the fault was not mine. I simply didn't control the situation (or so it seemed). Which is why I have used the term "poor controls". With the rocket I've found that if at the very beginning right after mounting I press and hold the "back" button, then speed is not as high and these episodes become more enjoyable. But when I just mount the rocket and it's facing the obstacle and I have no chance to avoid it, that's again what I think is a problem. Nothing critical, the game can be completed and there is a ton soul in it. Just now I have to force myself to forgive those issues and keep playing. Btw really appreciate your style and how detailed your reviews are. Very rare to find this nowadays. Thank you!
