Touching on the princesses topics, i say that i love them, they have great designs, even tho they can be sexualized for Rayman standerds, i think they are fine in that regard. But... I would prefer if they were designed like any other character in the game. Just look at that frog like character cut from Rayman Origins, its a perfect example of a what a female character of a existing specie could look like.

As an unfortunately horny dude, I enjoy that the princesses have sexy designs while also clearly prioritizing this sense of goofy, fun-loving character. I really like this retrospective and hope to see you expand to other franchises - I would suggest stuff like Hitman, Ratchet and Clank, Timesplitters if you took suggestions - however I have one problem to point out: a factual inaccuracy about the reason why the ports got delayed Ubisoft wasnt merely being a big greedy cartoon villain with the delay to the Wii U version, it was MICROSOFT and specifically the 360 that was the problem See there’s this obscure quirk of multiplats in the 360 era that Microsoft held up specifically for that console in which if you were barred from coming out at all on the console if you were a timed exclusive not in Xbox’s favor. So either Rayman Legends had to come out first for Xbox 360 or it wouldnt be allowed on the console at all, there was no Wii U first option available for Ubi It was essentially the kind of agreement that was purely to stoke the fires of console warring, I think a similar thing happened with GTA IV where either that game or its DLC had timed exclusivity for the 360 So Ubisoft were completely in the right to delay the game even if it was finished because it was either that or robbing it from Xbox owners altogether. Plus with the year long delay I believe the extras like the Origins remakes were put in during that extra development time. So it wasnt like they just had a complete game they delayed a year to work on ports, it was a game given an extra year of development set out to make it even better than it was I get that Ubisoft IS a bad company, but i often find myself having to defend them because they tend to be the lesser of two evils a lot of the time. They offer some more creative freedom with their devs than others (they let reflections make grow home and do whatever they want instead of forcing them to make what Ubi wants them to make) and often make decisions either at the behest of larger companies or are in the long run not THAT bad for the consumer as they seem. Theyre a far cry (no pun intended) from the same publisher that gave a true aueter like Ancel his start tho Edit: www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-ones-parity-clause-meant-to-make-owners-feel-/1100-6422886/ this parity clause cited is specifically for indie games but i imagine something similar for AAA releases if not policy wise but culturally

Hey - glad you liked the video :D. That's an interesting thought concerning Microsoft - I'm not sure about it though. I've been looking for info about it and couldn't find anything that suggests microsoft were rejecting games from going onto their console based on this. I think the GTA thing was just a normal timed- exclusivity deal for it's DLC, not anything to do with the policy of the console itself. Can I ask where you got this info from - I might just be missing something obvious.
@lovelyday2174
@lovelyday2174 5 ай бұрын
Sorry - I just noticed your edit now. It's interesting but I'm still not convinced. As you say, it's a thing for Indie games not AAA - they specifically say that that it's standard for AAA studios to release games all at the same time and they were just enforcing the same idea on the Indie space. (I don't agree with this as a policy to be clear, Indie and AAA games are just not the same beast and should not be treated the same way - though in fairness they imply some level of flexibility). It's also for the XBone not the 360, which while Legends did get a release on both the XBone one was a couple of months later. This policy seems to be more about "don't leave us as an afterthought" than exclusivity deals as well. There might be something to it but in source 8 of the video we have a fairly straight answer from a public relations specialist from Ubisoft which seems quite clear to me that the decision was made within the company. Granted there might be some restrictions on what she could have told us, but overall this just seems like stronger evidence to me. Sorry if I seem a bit sceptical about this, I am still glad you're pointing it out. It's good to make me think more about what I say and others will now have a better ability to judge for themselves. Thanks again for commenting :)

@@lovelyday2174 See, Polokus is always creating something. And often he creates something disgusting and horrible. So i think he tried to save Glade of Dreams. I think he wanted to trap Rayman and friends for not stopping him build his "Columbia". After all, it's mentioned that he loves Betilla (via some educational games). I clearly doubt that he was evil. Yeah, i know he followed the cult of the Mr. Dark. But if not counting Mr. Dark as a villain, but a very powerful wizard, it's understandable why he followed him. I think his only desire was to save the world. Also i clearly doubt that in Rayman Legends we sent him to the moon. Maybe, the true Ales is still somewhere at the Glade of Dreams. I really hope we'll see his Redemption in one of the future installments.

Love it - not sure if we can really consider the educational games cannon, but it would be kinda cool if they recontextualised him this way in the future. Alternatively they could make it that his dogmatic approach to what he see's as right drives him to becoming a proper villain - but either way they'll probably need a bit more story focus than they've been striving for to do so. Still a really cool interpretation though, thanks for the comment :D

Somewhat, but I think there's a few layers to why I don't accept that. We still hardly saw the world before Mr Dark's schemes took over for one, and there is a dubious sense of how the world's of the two games relate to each other to say the least (Rayman himself is the only real common ground). Furthermore, there's an argument to be had that asking people to play another game to grasp the context is unreasonable. Still, I stand by that Rayman 2 doesn't really need it.

cool video but had a few notes like it or not women don't play these kinds of games especialy in the 360 days and dont tell me that rayman's main audience are somthing else then teen boys im sure that if the devs had more time they woud have made more female characters (like they did with legends) and honestly why cant it be a mostly male cast, if it was trying to be realistic or tell a deep story? but normal people don't see it unless its mentioned or very extreme.
@lovelyday2174
@lovelyday2174 8 ай бұрын
Hey, glad you liked it. So there's a few arguments here, first concerning the target audience. There's a bit of a chicken and egg situation about this. You're right that boys play these types of games more than girls, there's plenty of data backing that up - but how much is it because of how they're sold and how much is it natural. Granted, I don't know the answer to that, but it's worth keeping in mind. Thing is, I don't really think it matters - even if the game targets boys, it is still good to communicate to them that girls and women should be treated with the same respect and versatility as their own gender. It might also be true that most people don't actively think about this sort of thing, but how our media presents the world to us does affect how we think about it - even if only in subtle ways. A good example from the cold war days is that places in East Germany which had access to West German TV actually had less children, which was in line with the typical depiction of 1 or 2 child homes (or even none) of western TV at the time. (This was just a depiction of their way of life on the other side of the iron curtain, as far as I know there was no active attempt by the western powers to reduce the fertility in East Germany) The affects aren't always overt and conscious - people and societies aren't that easy - but that doesn't mean they aren't there. As for the argument that the developers didn't have the time - this is fair to point out when asking for additional work to be done. But they already had the Teensie Queen to use as a base so they could have used her as the foundation for other characters instead of the male one. Like, say, the Goth Teensie, the Globox fan, the Wizard and the one that eat too much spice could have all been female instead of male and the work load really wouldn't have been that different. There's also the existing character Uglette that could have simply been a pink version of Globox - so I don't really buy that workload was the reason they didn't add more female PC's. I'm not really sure I understand your argument about telling a deep or realistic story - why would that change the gender of the main characters? Do you mean like from a historical perspective or something along those lines? Either way, sorry for long comment :P. Hope this clarifies my thoughts a bit better.

@lovelyday2174

I don't know - from the in game lore/manual it seems to imply to me that they came from elsewhere, I think the nightmares of the world are things like the skeleton chickens or evil catapillers you encounter throughout the game. Polokus's reach is vast so it's still possible that they still ultimately came from him. With that in mind, upon rereading the lums lore - I think I got his creation backwards - he was born of the lums rather than being their creator himself. Ops

I really liked this video! Origins wasn't my first foray into the franchise but it was the first game in the series that I played to completion so I have very fond memories of playing it with my family. I saw some comments not take too kindly to your segment about the nymphs and lack of femme rep in the game but as someone who is afab, I did appreciate you mentioning it. I don't *hate* the nymph's designs I just wish they didn't all look the same with different skin tones and hair color, them being so human like I think is sad too when they used to look way more unique in Rayman 1. If they were to return in a future entry, I hope they'll mix both iterations together. The lack of female playable characters was disappointing to me too since as a kid, my main was Teensie Queen tho I liked playing as the Teensies in general. I do appreciate Legends adding Barbara as a new female option but she kinda fell into the same pitfalls as the nymphs imo so I stook with Teensies the first time around. I'm curious to see your take on Legends since while I do remember Origins more fondly, I think it is wholly the better package. Can't wait to see more!

It is an aspect of the game that is trying to achieve a certain result and I have thoughts on it, so I want to say them. The only reason I can see to leave it out is because the topic is politically charged or otherwise controversial, and I decided before releasing a video that I wouldn't avoid topics because of that. If you want to argue that it was too long, I agree. I wanted to cover quite a bit as well as prime the discussion to be brought up again in the legends video (where my thoughts are more nuanced), but I still think there was some trimming to do. Besides, there are a lot of youtubers who reveal thier political standing later and have a crisis in thier audience. I'd rather just be clear about it from the start. Very long answer sorry, I hope that's a good explanation.

The magician uses the lums to power his huge flying...fortress? I dont actually know what the thing in the sky is, but still.

That's a point, makes sense with the design of the place too. Still not clear on why he wants the fortress though. Maybe he just wants to live there, that would be pretty evil after all.

Its a bit funny how you break feom all thoose analitical and poetical thoughts about the games meaning and style to go "women are underapreciated in this game" and "bosses bad" . I do appreciate you mentioning them but it was a pretty long and sour part where the intrest twindled . Still pretty amazing how much thought you put into the final ending and symbolism behind the name . Just felt a bit cut short at some sections but still ORIGINal (pun overly intended ) (feedback attempted) ( comment send)

That is very fair - I have tried to space out my 'bad' points in other videos a bit more. I didn't really realise how long I was being negative in this one (about 8 minutes in a row) - definitely should avoid doing that again. If I can ask, when you say 'cut short' do you mean that I didn't give enough closure to some of my points?

i think that rayman origins is mostly a platformer, and the bosses are more of a side thing.

I agree with that - the bosses are a pretty small part of the overall experience. I talk about them like this specifically because I like boss fights a lot as both a mechanical and narrative climax - and always feel a bit let down when they're not up to par. So much more of the game is really good though, should never forget that.
