Myabe his celebrity status distracts people from how excellent of a footballer he really was. He was a sensation. Unbelievable vision and delivery, excellent free kicks, and he carried the England team on his shoulders a number of times when they were underperforming. He was a footballer with great character and ability.

Beckham being overrated is a joke... 54 Goal contributions in 106 UCL matches, 136 Goal contributions in 263 Premier league matches. And 50 Goal contributions in 116 La Liga matches. So at highest level of Football he use to either score or assist every other match which is good even for a striker. And he wasn't taking penalties like few others like Lampard or his numbers were gonna be even better.

Beckham was benched by Capello at Real Madrid when he announced his MLS contract early in the season. Capello said he'd never play another minute for Madrid. He ended up working his way back into the squad and led La Liga in assists on the way to winning the title that year. After he went to MLS, he was able to walk into the squads of both AC Milan and PSG in the MLS offseason and was often a dominant starter for those teams while on loan. All done in his early to mid thirties. Absolute legend.

One thing that almost always gets overlooked with Beckham’s abilities (this video included) is his running. He wasn’t the fastest guy on the pitch, but he could run forever at an exceptional pace. He was an incredible workhorse, and I would argue it was the main reason why Real Madrid was happy to include him on their squad as they were an aging roster

Every time there was a free-kick and Beckham stood behind the ball you’d stop, watch, and were a lot more excited than you would be for most other players in the game. I don't care if he was deemed overrated. He was an absolute icon, a hero for me in my younger days, and rooted for any club that he played for.

Two stories I tell about Beckham: 1) I was fortunate to be at the Greece game where he scored the famous free kick. I was directly behind the strike, and to watch that go into the corner was magical. But over and above that, during that game I've never seen a player be so much better than everybody else during a game. You know when you see a bunch of kids playing and someone's older brother is also in the game, dominating everything? It was like that. 2) I once watched him and Diego Forlan warming up prior to a game. Beckham was hitting passes to Forlan from 40-50 metres away, and Forlan literally did not have to move an inch to receive the pass. Every time. I've never seen anything like it before or since. He's a favourite for me in terms of his total offering. Yes the free kicks, the passing and IMO the world's best ever crosser of a ball, but also his workrate, commitment and effort. That all put together made for an iconic player worthy of being in the top 50 of all time.

It's crazy many people who've never watched him actually think he was just a good looking dude. Beckham was a world class player. He was a Ballon d'Or runner up twice. He had excellent passing skills no matter the range. He was also a very hard working, mentally tough player. Also a huge threat with his long shots and free kicks.

His crossing and freekick were among the best in football HISTORY, his passing was among the best of his generation, beside that he also had REALLY good stamina and can contribute greatly to both attack and defense. His biggest weakness in my opinion, was the lack of flair and speed, which Wingers often possess. Overall, if it's not for his pretty face and celebrity status, he would've become a legend of the game, and I'm talking about Zidane level because he had that potential.

I grew up loving Bekcham. Not only because he was one of the most talented players of his generation, the greatest crosser of all time, one of the best free kick takers this sport has seen and an overall great midfielder, but specially because everything about his game was so unique. The way he moved was unique, the way he took free kicks was unique, even the role he played as a wide playmaker was unique. Beckham is on the tier of players that have a playstyle so unique that you cannot compare them because of how different they are to the point that you can easily identify them simply by the way they move or pass the ball around. It's like Ibrahimovic: no one plays the game the way he plays. Or even Thierry Henry, Roberto Carlos, Ricardo Quaresma, Romário and Thomas Muller. Some players are just a thing of their own even when they're not the best. I can't think of a single footballer that played like Becks.

I got into football after the Cantona era, so Beckham to me represents how sacred the No 7 is for Man Utd. The first player I ever heard of myself as well and this video gives him the credit he deserves as a footballer.

The main reason I think Beckham is considered overrated is because he's one of the famous people not just footballers but people ever. Obviously he's not as good as a Zidane, Xavi or Iniesta but he is alot more well known those guys. Many people don't think he deserves that level of fame so he's labeled as overrated.

Beckham was quality and a pop icon early on the late 90s, and early 2000's when i was starting to watch more futbol or be more of a fan, in school everybody had their team. One of the reasons i chose to be a united fan was because of beckham , and because i think it was my first jersey , but to be fair, i've followed them for 20 years now. And I've identified a lot with United, their values, Ferguson atleast winning spirit, etc. Its really nice to follow a team through thick and thin. Even if as a very young kid, you dont know or have so clear why your picking your team , now im really have a lot of love for Manchester United and i love watching futbol videos about United, and commenting etc, as a fan for 20 years ive been supporting United, and getting extremely happy when we play well, sign well in transfer market, and following them closely. I only started following football in 2010, so I asked my friend about Beckham since he was the most popular footballer in America not named Landon Donovan growing up (we've really come a long way in terms of our knowledge of football lol). I think he summarized Beckham's career beautifully "Beckham's greatness is embellished by the British media, but it's far from fictitious". The media back then would be making you think he was on the level of Messi and CR7, which is far from the truth, but in his prime he could walk onto the starting 11 of nearly any (not all, like golden era Barcelona) team. And plus, even if you thought he wasn't as good as some of his contemporaries, he had a knack for coming up big in moments that needed a big clutch moment. I love Thierry Henry, but one of the knocks on his career is that he didn't score in the biggest games as often as he should have (especially for France). I think even if you think Beckham's way overrated, you have to at least give him bonus points for showing up when it mattered the most when so many stars have been known to shrink.

Besides his heroics on the pitch, he was and continues to be a global ambassador for football. I was so obsessed with his game, that I switched from being a striker to a midfielder! And the reason was that i just wanted to pass, cross and assist and impact a match like he did. Ofcourse I was nowhere close 😂. And hell noone could ever "Bend It Like Beckham ".

I started watching football because of Beckham. That half line goal stunned me when I was just a kid. At the time, I didn’t know forwards could kick a ball that far. Then I started getting into Man U vs. Arsenal matches… then EPL.. then he made international headlines transferring to RM… then I started following la liga… then cr7. Now I watch all the major leagues in Europe. Beckham was famed for his good looks and haircuts (both undeniable. Many of my peers including me had the onion haircut), which goes on to say these factors shadowed his skill and talent. The precision and foresight of his long passes were unprecedented in his era. Where I’m from, commentators even had a name for his long passes “seven whirlwind cross” coz he was no. 7 and his crosses had so much spin and accuracy. On a bigger scale, I even think he popularised football/epl on a global level, because guys wanted to be like him and girls wanted to watch him. He’s a true legend and icon.

Although his on pitch legacy is undoubtably spectacular (buoyed by his natural talents, diligent work rate and clutch moments), his off pitch legacies allowed many of his present and future peers to have lucrative off pitch opportunities that footballers before the 21st century could only dream of. Beckham also made football cool and fashionable, and his immense star power drew millions of people around the world into the sport that they now love, especially the US.

I watched Theo literally grow into the footballer he became at Arsenal and for no fault of his, the media, including people at Arsenal made parallels to Henry and that weighed heavily on him through his career. His numbers are spectacular. A world class finisher and arguably the only big game player Arsenal had till Alexis Sanchez was signed. It took me years to acknowledge Theo, and when I look back at his game now, my word what a player he was. Not to forget injuries blighted his career and despite that he ended up being a centurion for Arsenal despite playing majority of his career on the right wing. Super super player.

Since then, he matured to a level where you cannot help but admire the guy, the human behind the footballer. 2. Not the most naturally talented (Ronaldino should be the one) footballer, and - this theme will come up often - 3. Beckham is smart enough to know it. 4. So, he work the hardest instead to make up for this relatively lack of football tricks. And Ferguson loves hard-working water-carriers (like Mr Park JS). And Beckham can also carry the "water" 50 yards with unbelievable accuracy (as can Scholes, but the shy man doesn't market himself as well). That is one of his main strengths. 5. Those of us who watched football in that era knew how precise Beckham is with set-pieces. Of the 2000+ comments here, maybe half of them acknowledged it, so ... there. 5a. And some folks are real disrespectful to say his other skillsets are "average". You cannot be "average" in positioning and technique, etc, to play for Man U and Read Madrid and AC Milan. Come on ... 6. What stands out for me for Beckham is his sheer determination and work-rate later, esp after he became England's captain. Anyway, it is quite apparent that he took real pride in this role as a human behind the footballer persona, and he did his utmost. Even as I had not watched football for 10+ years, I still remembered the 2 matches that Beckham stood out - that Greece match, and the Man U/Real Madrid match. That Man U/Real Madrid match should be watched again and again for a few reasons - It showed how ridiculously good the fat Ronaldo (it's an endearing term for me, ha) was, and then how ridiculous Beckham was after he was subbed in. 7. Beckham almost single-handedly dragged Man U back into the match. Always thought that if Beckham started that match instead of Ferguson starting the unfit Veron to cut-his-nose-to-spite-his-face, the outcome would have been ... interesting. Not saying Beckham can win it for them, because the fat Ronaldo is the CR7/Messi of his era. But, Beckham's big-match temperament cannot be argued. Fergie sold him later because he disliked the media circus, and Beckham's reputation was bigger than the club. As the club's manager, it was a big no-no. Nothing to do with his footballing ability. It had not declined, as some folks here wrote. Quite the opposite. Beckham was at his peak. And Real Madrid does not sign lousy or average players. Sure, he was bought to sell shirts and enhance the club's reputation. But, make no mistake - 5b. you dont play with the Zidanes and the Ronaldos if you are rubbish. Michael Owen was the bench backup SC, for goodness sake~! 5c. However, we must acknowledge that with a Zidane in your team, you simply cannot be the playmaker of your team, even if Beckham was one of the best right playmaking midfielder of the era. A few folks got it right in the comments, I feel. Beckham isnt a winger, but in that era, terms like inverter wingers are not invented yet. And, Beckham is indeed a right-field playmaker. 6a. And, his workrate and selfless sacrifices for the team made him undroppable. In a Galacticos team, mind you. I read that he was initially dropped with Capello (rightly) deemed Beckham unsuitable for a winger position. 3a. So, Beckham simply did what he always do when the chips are down - he proceeded to work even harder and smarter to make sure dropping him is a difficult decision. If not for the fact that the Galacticos team simply became way too unbalanced towards attack, they would have won more titles because Beckham was willingly to be the water carrier for the team. 8*. Maybe a special mention about the England national team. Their media loves to build someone up, and then tear them down, just to sell more papers. With all due respect (because i am not as competent in football as the average PL player. It is funny how some folks commented here, like they can play as well as CR7 or Messi, ha), the English team tend to be ... yes, over-rated. Beckham at that time seems to be the only guy trying. Look, a midfield of Gerrard and Lampard and Beckham and ... Scholes is shuffled to the left because he is too nice a person to argue, forcing his freaking early national retirement~! Campbell in Arsenal, correct? Ferdinard, Man U? The midfield bench alone ... Rooney at his peak was outstanding, but his mentality was torn into pieces by the media and he declined relatively early ... Anyway, my point was - that England team is indeed a golden generation, but ... fuck egos meant that, e.g. both Gerrard and Lampard wanted the AMC hero role, and no one wanted the DMC. Literally cannot remember who can play there, once the David Bettys and Nicky Butts are out of reckoning. They will never win anything in my lifetime, I feel. 9. After that, a move to Milan after MLS. And it is not because his wife can buy bags at a discount right at Milan, ha. At that time, Milan had the best sports science centre in football. Paolo Maldini played at the highest level until ... 39? Beckham moved there to try to PROLONG his career at the top. The man behind the football persona loves his football a lot still with a burning passion. A pity though, time waits for no man. Finally, Beckham's time was up, or rather his body cannot hold up anymore. 3c. Luckily he had always been a smart guy, and had planned for the next stage of his life well in advance. 10. Another special mention is the fact that none of his fellow football colleagues have a bad word to say about him. I mean, if Zlatan praises you, you must be something, hahaha~! 1a. As said, the guy matured after the 98 World Cup. While not a Ronaldino nor Zidane, Beckham made the best use of his skillsets and showed outstanding decision-making and perservance on the field and in life, and had an outstanding football career. What more he needed to achieve to be considered, we need to ask? 10 more titles, 5 more Champions Leagues? My beloved fat Ronaldo had not won a single one, for goodness sake~! World Cup? Giggs had not even played in a single World Cup stage~! And that is why on these various points alone, Beckham has to be considered a football legend in his own right.

As a casual observer of football for quite some time I only recently fell in love with the sport. I love watching Beckham play football. I had many joyful memories watching him in his entire career. His passion, freekicks, crosses, long balls, corners, passes, pressing and sometimes his dribbles were done beautifully and elegantly. He's one of the players of Beautiful Football that has gone now. He's there with players like Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo The Phenomenon, Zico, Cruyff, Puskas, Zidane and many others throughout generations that played the Beautiful Football.

Definitely under appreciated. He was not on the level like Figo in terms of dribbling and being that wide forward. But Figo and other wide players of the time, had to beat a player before they could get a cross yet Beckham didn't always have to, he was able to bend it around with little space. That technique is insane, I feel that it doesn't quite drop with people.

You can say whatever you want about Beckham, but this man was literally a marksman on the field. The accuracy he had was the just out of this world. I grew up always hearing his name from my dad and he’s always been a big name for me. By no means is he overrated!

Great video! There were many other underrated aspects of his game. The guy was an absolute workhorse, ran his heart out every game on the right for Manchester United and in central midfield for Real Madrid. His distance covered was always close to the top. Post the 00's and treble winning season, he started tracking back a lot more and his defensive contributions were great, he was also not afraid to get stuck. As Beckham was incredibly athletic, he also had a great leap. While he did not score many with his head he would often have the better of his full-back in the air and won his fair share of headers on the far post. This is in addition to being the greatest crosser of the ball in history, one of the best ever long to medium range passers; apart from the assists, the way he turned defense into attack with one pass or just broke the lines was so effortless.

Beckham is one of those players who dedicated their career to be a specialist. Which is quite an antithesist to recent football where players with multi specs are more valuable. He is in special place with Ryan Giggs, Filippo Inzaghi, Andrea Pirlo, Alessandro Nesta, Riquelme.

The UK media worship him. Hardly underrated.

I think it comes down to how you view the game at some level. Beckham played a beautiful game and his passes made me smile. An analogy, I prefer Ronaldinho (all time favorite) to Cristiano Ronaldo even tho he is not as dominant stats wise

Beckham was so much better than what many people give him credit for… u have to be a great player to be courted by Galactico era Real Madrid to be a first teamer for them… if anything his off the pitch fame hurt people’s impression of him… But one thing though is that people who defend him sometimes go a bit too far… he’s not as good as people defend him to be… Beckham was not among the best of his generation in his role… it’s like how as great as he is Muller will not be in the talks among Xavi Iniesta Zidane Modric etc
