Just for the young folks here. Ronaldo 9 El Fenómeno was so good that when I was in the stadium you could hear the fear (from the opposite team’s supporters) and gasping for anticipation (from the Barcelona supporters) every time he got the ball in the midfield ! In those days strikers were purely area players. He was so good and dangerous that catching the ball in the midfield everybody knew he could run and score. Only Ronaldinho and Messi later gave me the same sensations.
@hw2508

It really was a different game. Many strijers back then scored 15 to 20 League goals per season and were considered dangerous. And then there comes a strikter who is not only in the box or just waiting on the offside line, but is able to dribble past five defenders and play passes, AND he scored nearly one goal per game. That was totally different. Not that Messi and Ronaldo did not put the whole game on another Level. But still, the 90s were different football.

for me, maradona asides, ronaldo in barcelona time is the GOAT, not human; then intel time before the injury, he was 90-100%, a little over weighted already, but not too much, still the GOAT; after the injury 60-70%, huge difference compare to what he was, but still won world cup; Madrid time, although he was still one of the best, but no more than 50%. but i have to say, the way he moves his body with the ball in THAT SPEED is too inhuman, it is his unique genius, but also increased the risk of him get injured dramatically.

I've been following football for over 50 years and seen many great players. In my humble opinion Ronaldo was the best I've ever seen. I remember watching games when he played for PSV Eindhoven and was blown away by what I saw. He could take the ball from the halfway line and dribble past numerous players and score. Not once, but time and time again. He'd just breeze past players as if they wasn't even there. His speed was breathtaking and his dribbling was just not of this world. I loved Ronaldinho, Maradona and still watch Barcelona play just to watch Messi. I can appreciate these world class players but Ronaldo Nazario was in a class of his own. People who say Messi was the best ever probably never saw Ronaldo play. There is no comparison. I feel blessed that I witnessed Ronaldo at his best.

I followed him like he was my team & alongside my actual team, in 2002 I made money on him by betting on him to be the WC2002 golden boot winner at 20/1 when he was injured and looking like he wouldn't be fit in time, the Old Trafford standing ovation walk off, I lived it all and much more with this man, he distracted me from some difficult times in life and will always be my #1 player of all time. A little story I was about 7-8 years old when brazil won the worldcup and one of my uncles showed me this guy with a weird haircut and told me he was the best player in the world. I have faint memories of the worldcup and watching every game of brazil and argentina Time went on and I got more interested in cricket and didn't watch football at all 6-7 years later my friends were buying computers and video games and they kept saying the name Ronaldo , I just assumed it was him but someone showed me a playing card with Cristiano's face , and I said thats not Ronaldo! My friends laughed at the fact that I didn't know about Cristiano at all and apparently he was the best player in the world That incident shocked me like where is that guy (R9) wasnt he the best player? I didnt have a mobile back then and couldn't do a google search and my uncles also didnt know anything recent Eventually I did come to know about messi and cristiano Fast forward 10 years , it was 2020 lockdown and I started watching football stuff again and suddenly on one video I saw R9 , wow that magically took me back instantly into my childhood And I have been watching his videos ever since and its incredible how skillfull he was. He played at a time where defence was an art-form, you could actually tackle/kick and rough players up as part of the game. Even then he would use his strength and determination to stay on his feet rather than dive. Unfortunately that may have contributed to his injuries but thats the player he was. just for curiosity: Ronaldo said in a interview that back on the days the coaches had him run marathons because they thought it would help him stay fit, but ronaldo said that it probably made him weaker, as it would unnecessarily overtress his knees, and if he could go back in time, he would never run so much in the training series... i personally agree, how can someone so fast and strong like ronaldo get so many injuries all of a sudden at such a young age??

I always remember him picking up the ball at the half way line.he perhaps wasn't as fast as before his injury but it didn't matter...he was so strong..players would just bounce off him. Can you explain to me what makes Ronaldo Nazario so special? Everyone says he’s the best but personally I don’t see what makes him outstanding. I always felt he was an ordinary striker who’s reputation became way overblown after scoring in the 1998 Champions League final against Lazio as well as the 2002 World Cup. He’s not really impressive at all.
@MGLT1234
@MGLT1234 2 жыл бұрын
@@USMNTsoccerELITE I mean, have you really watched the video? Opinions on him don't come from one or two dudes, but from a ton of players, journalists and football lovers. What made him special? Well, in his physical prime, he had a good pace for a striker, really had that explosion, which allowed him to run past defenders. He also was a fine dribbler, and knew how to score goals. The thing everybody said about him as a downside, his heading was not good. When I mentioned his knees, is just because a player's body is his work tool. So, having as many bad injuries as he had, it really can bring a player down, for example, Van Basten, who also suffered. Another bad thing about him, his work ethic about his body, diet, not drinking, was a mess, he didn't take care of himself like Cristiano Ronaldo does, for example. To end my point of view, the goals in finals are just the icing on the cake, mate, not the cake itself.

@@MGLT1234 The thing is, if you actually followed Ronaldo’s career (which I did) you’d realize he was an extremely overrated player. That’s worse than a number of forwards from his generation (Shearer, Henry, Shevchenko, Batistuta, Van Nistelrooy, Inzaghi, Del Piero & Totti).
