Imagine if Emmanuel Steward had gotten ahold of Ruddock...
@30over3
@30over3 4 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. The power would always be there but the skills he had abandoned would resurface under Steward's guidance. On top of that, Steward works on a fighter's defense and maximizes their ability and minimizes their weaknesses.

Great corner for Bonecrusher Smith. One Classic remark from that corner was when Joe Frazier asked, "Do you want me to fight him for ya !!" Classic.😂 The shot that put Razor down early was definitely in Bonecrusher's game plan, not a prolonged slugfest. The longer the fight went, the more detrimental it was for the Bonecrusher.

Poor James...he had Ruddock on queer street in round 2 but he rushed the huge Jamaican without throwing effective punches allowing Razor to clinch and clear his head. He threw one straight and lethal right hand about 30 seconds after the knockdown that would have ended it but he missed by a couple of inches. If he had given himself some distance and jabbed before throwing combinations, he would have been much more effective. He shot his bolt in the round and looked tired and vulnerable the rest of the way. The wonderful and frustrating thing about boxing is a fighter's fortunes can be changed by a missed punch. The right hand Bonecrusher threw in round 2 was the turning point. Missed a spectacular victory by inches.

I agree with Reinaldo Manuel. I have seen him lost to Mike Tyson (two fights) which were the best of his career. In the second fight, Ruddock went to full distance with Mike Tyson. That was the very best of him. But his loss to Tommy Morrison and Lennox Lewis was due mainly to his lack of balance and defence. In this fight, Ruddock suffered his knock down due also to his lack of defence.

Stamina for Smith boiled down to age difference. Smith was 11 years older that Ruddock. Smith looked tired from the early rounds, and Ruddock was just getting warmed up. Age 36 is not old, but it is old for a boxer.

This is the fight that I pinpoint as the one where Ruddock began to rely on his power and where his boxing skills took a permanent backseat. I figured he would beat Bonecrusher but not by knockout. Bonecrusher had a tendency to masquerade as BoneHUGGER, and that’s what I expected. Smith came to fight, though, and dropped Ruddock early, and I remember thinking, “The Razor is in over his head.” The Razor showed heart, though. He fought back. As listless as he could be, when Bonecrusher was ON, he was one of the more devastating punchers in the heavyweight division (see the fights with Bruno, Weaver and Witherspoon). Considering how early he got decked in the 2nd round, The Razor showed incredible fortitude. Ultimately, his youth and conditioning helped him prevail.

I've been looking for this fight for YEARS. I couldn't remember who it was that knocked down Ruddock, and Ruddock was laughing. I figured it was Jaco, but no. I remember before the Tyson fight Roy Firestone interviewing Razor and asking him why the hell he'd be laughing and he said, "it's better than crying!" lol. Today I was watching Tyson-Razor pre-fight stuff and someone mentioned he had been hurt pretty bad by Bonecrusher, and wa-la, here it is. Thanks!

*(**13:15**) ..This is the exact stance against Bonecrusher, that Ruddock never corrected.. he bends over to the side and leaves himself wide open; which eventually led to him getting K.O.D by Lennox Lewis in their bout in '92!* WHAT WERE THEY THINKING.???.. his trainers should have known better than to ignore such a flagrant lapse in judgement and Ruddock should have sharpened his skill's after this fight. Lennox would take note of this and eventually would later expose Razor's weaknesses and dominate him in spectacular fashion!

Ruddock had no boxing skill just a hard hitter if he had three quarter of Buster Douglass skill he would have easily beaten Tyson

You’re an idiot if you think he had no boxing skills he is way better than Dougles, Dougles won only because of the long count + tyson didnt train for dougles he even got dropped during his sparring

@@mightysayyah9101 He’s not wrong though. Buster Douglas had footwork, stiff jab, solid hand speed and defense. Ruddock was mostly a one dimensional fitgher, he relied to much on the “smash”.

Bcs was a low tier journeyman who fought poor caliber fighters, Mike did a job on him to the point where all he did was hold all fight, a washed up, nothing happening bum!. Ruddock on the other hand was very complacent, had he let go and fought instead of box he would have probably beat some of the better fighters of his time, just look at the first Tyson fight, it was sooo good and Drew sooo much money that they had to do it again, and Ruddock gave Tyson his best!.
