Completely agree. The power would always be there but the skills he had abandoned would resurface under Steward's guidance. On top of that, Steward works on a fighter's defense and maximizes their ability and minimizes their weaknesses.

Great corner for Bonecrusher Smith. One Classic remark from that corner was when Joe Frazier asked, "Do you want me to fight him for ya !!" Classic.😂 The shot that put Razor down early was definitely in Bonecrusher's game plan, not a prolonged slugfest. The longer the fight went, the more detrimental it was for the Bonecrusher.
@MrCrystalcranium3 жыл бұрын
Poor James...he had Ruddock on queer street in round 2 but he rushed the huge Jamaican without throwing effective punches allowing Razor to clinch and clear his head. He threw one straight and lethal right hand about 30 seconds after the knockdown that would have ended it but he missed by a couple of inches. If he had given himself some distance and jabbed before throwing combinations, he would have been much more effective. He shot his bolt in the round and looked tired and vulnerable the rest of the way. The wonderful and frustrating thing about boxing is a fighter's fortunes can be changed by a missed punch. The right hand Bonecrusher threw in round 2 was the turning point. Missed a spectacular victory by inches.

This is the fight that I pinpoint as the one where Ruddock began to rely on his power and where his boxing skills took a permanent backseat. I figured he would beat Bonecrusher but not by knockout. Bonecrusher had a tendency to masquerade as BoneHUGGER, and that’s what I expected. Smith came to fight, though, and dropped Ruddock early, and I remember thinking, “The Razor is in over his head.” The Razor showed heart, though. He fought back. As listless as he could be, when Bonecrusher was ON, he was one of the more devastating punchers in the heavyweight division (see the fights with Bruno, Weaver and Witherspoon). Considering how early he got decked in the 2nd round, The Razor showed incredible fortitude. Ultimately, his youth and conditioning helped him prevail.

*(**13:15**) ..This is the exact stance against Bonecrusher, that Ruddock never corrected.. he bends over to the side and leaves himself wide open; which eventually led to him getting K.O.D by Lennox Lewis in their bout in '92!* WHAT WERE THEY THINKING.???.. his trainers should have known better than to ignore such a flagrant lapse in judgement and Ruddock should have sharpened his skill's after this fight. Lennox would take note of this and eventually would later expose Razor's weaknesses and dominate him in spectacular fashion!
