It's a good thing that you fixed this beast of an engine.. When I saw the title of the video, I was like "Uh Oh... What Did He Do? Who let him cook?" but luckily it was just an accident, and the engine only took MINOR damage.

I have a Williams NW-2 switcher for 20 years and counting and it has survived a 3ft drop off my layout going 100 scale mph! It’s still works with no problems. Got lucky!

I started O-scale back in 2007 and this happened about 15 years ago. I had a dash 8(only about a 3rd the price of a Big Boy) go off the edge of the layout and break in to several pieces(I was not in a frame of mind then to count the pieces) I remember feeling about 15 emotions at once. I assure you none of them were embarassment. After what seemed like an eternity, I might have uttered a couple cuss words. That was a long time ago and I have never made that mistake again. Honestly man, I've been watching your videos for about a year now, but the second I saw that JCM 800/900 half stack I knew you deserved my sub! Man's got great trains and arguably even greater amplification!

Great to have you back!! Always appreciate modelers who will share the blunders as well as the picture perfect. Always fun to get a dose of your wit and humor along with a beautiful locomotive.

Several years ago I was running a brand new Sunset 3rd Rail C&O Greenbrier on a friends layout. As it approached the end of a straightaway the screw holding the eccentric and piston rods on the engineers side backed out. The piston rod swung around, dug in and flipped the engine over on its side. Had that screw dropped out a few feet further the engine would have taken a 4 foot drop to the concrete floor. Needless to say all the parts were reassembled and every fastener on the running gear was checked for tightness. Good you were able to fix the pilot and valve gear on the Big Boy and get it running again. Good to see you posting again.

Wow that’s a scary thing to drop the BigBoy. I was thinking and the biggest thing that’s happened is I’ve run into some cars from a coupler coming open and the emergency stop button didn’t get it stopped in time. Glad to see you fixing your train. And that’s awesome Sid came over to help you out, that would be awesome to have him nearby!!

I was working on my Lionel American Flyer Challenger, trying to resolve a control issue. All at once, it decided to rocket off my layout at full speed. Before I could stop it, it launched about EIGHT feet away from my layout, on to hard floors. Amazingly, nothing was broken. The tender separated from the engine when it landed. Two sets of wheels came loose from the tender. That is the only harm my flying Flyer experienced. I consider myself darn lucky!

What a heart-stopping experience! That's a 'YIKES' moment in my book. Sid is a really good friend to have. He's a brilliant trouble shooter, a great collector and a nice guy all around. You overcame a very troubling situation, Chris, by knowing what you could do and when to seek assistance.

Very sorry about the accident with the Big Boy but am pleased you and Sid were able to bring it back to life as good as new. Awesome video! Even though I do HO and not O, I've had similar experience with locomotives and rolling stock taking a ride to the floor, its just one of those things, unfortunately! What I was shocked by, was how little damage was done and how relatively simple it was to replace the broken parts on that locomotive! I know Lionel gets dunked on for having incredibly expensive trains, but credit to them for building an absolute tank of a locomotive despite the level of detail, and making it easy to replace the broken parts.

Maybe Lionel needs to talk with Mattel so the Thomas Motorised trains can go back to being push along like your BIG BOY

Hey welcome back, i was waiting for a new video, but not this one. I am glad to see it was not hurt to badly. I had just restored a post war 681 and was runni 12:30 ng it to work in all fresh libe when i heard a crash, onto cement, i just turned off main power and lights and went to bed.

I'm so glad you were able to fix your Big Boy Chris and that the damage was minor. I can't imagine how devastated you must've been, I would be crying if this happened to me 🤣🤣. Glad to see its back in service on your layout and even better than before. Great video Chris!

I am happy to see that the damage was so minor. My previous layout was also in a with a carpeted floor and I am sure that my American Flyer K5 model mostly survived to pilot first dives off that layout. The only damage was where a bar at the back of the cab, to which the tender draw bar attaches, became disconnected from its' anchor points. Before I got the locomotive, a previous owner had had to reattach that bar. Some JB Weld made the reconnection - twice.

Oh man that stinks glad you could fix it no problems... Glad to hear you say more vibes are coming.. Look forward to them every Friday ben missing them...

Welcome back Chris! It's been a while but it's great to see you again! (Although honestly I prefer your older theme music!) My worst train drop? It was more like a waterfall! I'd set up a display shelf for some cabooses but didn't put a stop on the end of the track. I turned around, brushed one of the cabooses half-way up the shelf and four of them rolled off four feet to the floor! Luckily, no damage, but you better believe those shelves have stops on 'em now!

Worst mistake I ever made I was running a postwar 746 on a super O layout I had, the main line had a switch that ran the trains onto a siding that had accessories on it, coal dump, fork lift, lumber mill etc. the switch was straight and not going into the yard. My 746 was pulling about8 6464 different cars. As the 746 rolled over the switch, she derailed and broke off the steps on one side of the cow catcher, I remember I was upset for about 6 weeks because you couldn’t get that part it was the complete shell. Well I got lucky and found, at a show, a 746 the had been in a small fire. The back half of the shell was totaled but the front was ok. The next York I went over to see Elliot Welz, who did restorations, I asked him if he thought he could salvage it, he agreed and the next York meet he had done the impossible he totally repaired my 746. I still have it today and you can’t tell it was repaired. So many thanks to Elliot Welz

I was adding a #14-2 cable to cut down on voltage drop on my track when everything went haywire and my whole train toppled off my track which is mounted 6' 8" off the floor, and its a wooden floor not carpet. I had to repair two cars which took an hour. No damage to the engine thank God. Lionel Trains are built well!

Dang Chris, my heart stopped when I saw the video title. I’m sure yours stopped when you dropped your Big Boy. Thankfully minor damage and turned out to be easily repairable. Also really nice to have Sid on call and nearby for the electronics and smoke unit repairs. Another great video as always!

Chris- My heart sunk when this video popped up in my feed. YIKES! Glad the damage was minor and that you were able to put Humpty Dumpty back together again........ I've been there too- caught a 0-6-0 tank with a shirt sleeve once, it took a 4' flight to the floor and luckily landed flush on it's side. One side rod was slightly bent and the engineer needed a trip to the ER, but he recovered and is back on duty.

The worst thing I ever done was when I was little, I had two x crossings, I used to get my steam, and my devil engine, and see who would derail on those crossings. Not the greatest thing I ever done though. I also used to over flow my steam engine with smoke pellets to the point where the smoke came out of any car is it could. And when it did, I ran it at a high speed like a runaway. Good times, good mistakes.

My Dad took his O gauge Lee Marsh Princess to run on Pete Waterman's layout. It was coupled to a rake of coaches and set running. Pete had forgotten to change the points (switches) leading into the fiddle yard and it ploughed into the back of a goods train. Fortunately no damage was sustained by the loco.

Dropping one of my engines has been one of my biggest fears. Nice how calm and resourceful you were when you fixed yours. I was afraid that the driving wheels would gotten bent or the axel. When I saw you taking out the screws I noticed you placed them off to the side. I would like to suggestion have magnet to put them on. I have found this keeps them from disappearing. Harbbor Freight has a magnetic dish that would work as well. Thanks for a instruction video> JH

Glad you get it all working Chris. I have been there myself when a couple of of my OO gauge model trains decided to do their own thing and the Hornby Class 60 that was 60071 in EWS livery that I had back in 2007 jumped the points and knock off my oncoming Class 50 on the other line. Both of them along with some coaches and wagons hit the floor. 60071 only sustained broken horns and some footsteps came off. The Class 50 which was 50031 named as "Hood" also from Hornby wasn't so lucky as it got the brunt from the laminate floor and the Class 60 landing on top of it. I was on the phone at the time and I used to run my trains fast as it looked fun but I learned the hard way that it was NOT a good idea.

I see someone is really loving the mecha model fandom now on their layout. Something I was hoping to do soon but you kinda beat me to it lol. I spot PG red frame astray, PG unleashed RX-78-2, MG wing Gundam ver ka and I'm not sure if the the RG or an action figure but I love seeing the gogaigar standing on top of the factory building like it trying to protect even though if it was real, that build would be destroyed just from a foot being on it xD now all your missing is some transformers, evagelion and macross to have all the main line mecha series in model kit form on your layout somewhere xD Great video btw, love the toy train drop reenactment, it had me loling xD

Oh man that sucks. Glad you were able to fix your model. I’ve had a few nightmares. One that I remember is that late last year I accidentally tipped BLI Big Boy off the tracks. Now that doesn’t sound too bad except, the tracks are sitting on 4 inch risers. Luckily there was no scenery where it felt because I’m sure the dirt and other scenery material would have scratched the engine somehow or another. I was lucky that there was minimal damage and of a few detail parts came off and nothing broke.

My biggest model train mistake……..well, just yesterday I dropped one of my 50s American flyer passenger cars, the red mail type with the black arm. It was dropped from around 4 feet off a shelf onto HARDWOOD FLOOR!!! Massive crack down the side of the car and chips out of other spots by the bottom of the shell, the screws holding the shell on were also ripped out of the frame.

Hi Chris, I am so happy you were able to fix your Big Boy and get even the smoke motor to work, this must be some sort of fan motor ? I so enjoy your enthusiasm and love of trains.

Several years ago I broke the same linkage on my first T1. The thing is, it is a Right of Way Industries model from 1990. Try getting new parts for that! The good news is that with a lot of care and persistence, I was able to splice the linkage back together. The T1 runs well but I'm always a little nervous about that rod/arm, whatever it is called. Thanks for the new video, a great way to finish my day.

Glad the damage was minimal! A while back I had a lionmaster sd-80 that fell off the table when I was reaching over it. It only broke the side frame and bent an axle on one truck. The guys at my local train shop got a new truck and side frame and repaired it at no charge even though it was out of warranty.

Great to see it back in action and that by falling did not make a Big mess of itself! Also very cool to see more Gundams on the layout!!

Well great come back and this should teach you to be more careful but sometimes stuff happens. Your lucky that the damage was very little. It could have been much worse. Also its great to see you back and please be more careful when you move your locomotives no matter how big or how small.

Thank goodness for the carpet. My worst mistake, or was it just bad luck, was when I set up an 054 loop around the Christmas tree so I could show my niece and nephew my premier 4501 model. I played the PSA announcements and my dachshund decided to play godzilla and lunged herself at the locomotive, derailing it. Had it been running there would have been damage, not to mention a visit to the vet. So, I only run my postwar Lionel models now that and both dogs don't mind the air whistle

Chris. Oh Chris. I feel your pain on dropping an engine. I had an incident with my Lionel Big Boy, thankfully NOT the 4014 like yours, where a power outage for a split second made the motors in the engine surge to top speed, and fly off a curve on my layout, destroying the connections to the sound system in the tender’s drawbar. Thankfully the drawbar was fixed to where I could connect it back up to the engine itself, but there isn’t anymore sounds coming from it. But, to me, as long as I can still pull cars with it, I’m all good.

I also dropped my BigBoy! I placed it upside down on my lap to do some lubricating when it fell between my legs onto a tiled kitchen floor. I just called Lionel and shipped it there to be fixed. Btw, when talking to Lionel the young lady there asked me what happened, so I was honest and told her. She gave me $20 off for my honesty!!

Chris I just did the same thing with my Lionel Veranda over the holiday season luckily that thing is a tank. Don't sweat it.

Hey Chris. Good to see that you were still able to get 4014 back up and running again. Sid really is the Magic Mechanic for the job. By the way, you’re not alone when it comes to broken linkage rods. I fell into the same category once with my Lionel 777 commander Vanderbilt

My greatest mistake was when i started in the hobby, i had a marklin layout and wanted to buy a new train online, i stumbled upon an ICE 1 for 80 bucks, which was a great deal, unfortunately when i got home i realized it was a branch of marklin called marklin "hamo" which was DC and not compatible with my AC layout

Similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I just got back from a train show with a new Athearn Norfolk Southern dash 9, my first NS horsehead diesel. And while I was trying to fit it with Kadees, its chassis fell off the table onto the floor. Still runs thankfully, but not very smoothly. In the process of fixing it with some help.

You are a lucky guy!! Carpet helped. Going to put it all around my floor after seeing this. You are also lucky for Sid. He sure is an electronic whiz.

Part of the hobby at times. I received an es44ac last year with both MU lines snapped off. Lionel sent me the replacement pilots but i had to remove the body and replace them.

Hi Chris, I have dropped my trains off my desk before. My wooden trains to be exact. They have gotten some damages from the derailments. Last year, I was driving my favorite train with 3 cars in tow. When the train took a right hand turn, the 3rd car just tipped to the right and fell off the track and pulled the rest of the train off, except the engine that I stopped with my hand. There was nothing wrong with the track. The car was leaning to the right anyway, but it was just fine on my bedroom layout. That was very strange. The engine did still derail, but I kept it on the desk. The cars did get a little bit damaged, but I fixed them. Thank goodness. I don't know what I would do without my favorite train. Cory Mears

I once dropped a Lionel Big Boy. It wasn't a mass produced version that fell a foot onto carpet. It was one of the first engineering samples that Lionel produced, back in 1999 or so - basically the first Big Boy Lionel ever made. If they had serial numbers, it might even have been be #001 (maybe). Their display layout at York had a lot of curves on inclines, and every time the train came around the curve going up someone had to press the "Boost" button on the Cab 1 remote, and every time the train came down the grade, someone had to manually slow it down around the curve. At some point my finger slipped, and I accelerated it downhill. It flew off of their layout onto the ground, which was a gravel parking lot. The guys said they didn't know the cab number to get it started back up again, but looking back that sounds like a lie you tell a 10 year old. I'm glad you were able to get yours working again! It's a really nice engine. And that re-enactment, it was perfect!

When I was a kid, I put my postwar culvert loader on the floor. Well, I was walking around and getting off a ladder I had to get to my layout….i stepped on it and the beam was never the same 😢. I got out of trains and back in now….and now I never put anything on the floor so it doesn’t get ruined. I did have my train running on the floor for a short time before I got my layout up, and surprise surprise, my wife kicked it while trying to open the blinds. Made me get my layout up around the wall asap!

Oof! Sorry that happened!! I have an MTH RailKing RDC Budd Car That was dropped years ago. It had MTH QSI PS1 and when it was dropped, all the electronics and boards were damaged. It’s been a dummy car for years but I have plans to get new parts for it and get it running again. I already have a few of the original parts that weren’t damaged, including the flywheel motors.

First video I've watched of yours. At 10 minutes in, I noticed the LEGO modular buildings. I actually had the same idea to do this. It looks nice and brings the two worlds together! And thumbs up to the Cedar Point sign. My favorite Rollercoaster park. 😊

Years ago, I was running my Lionel 8632 New York Central Atlantic on my 4x8 layout. The layout has 2 loops: O-31 outside, O-27 inside. I had the Atlantic on the outer loop. I sent it flying off the table because I took a curve too fast. Fortunately, I only broke off one of the pilot wheels. WATCH YOUR SPEED!

I happens to many of us. I have an HO scale empire, and I’ve raised four sons and now two grandchildren on it. Once, my son was running one of our Pennsy M-1b locomotives, and fortunately I was in the right place at the right time. It jumped off the layout and landed on my sneakers. Nothing broke on it! There were times over the years that other things with a less fortunate result have happened.

Good video Katy boy! If that was an MTH engine, good luck finding parts. Lionel has better product support. That said, nice job on the cosmetics. Someone like Sid is truly a treasure to restore reality as it were. Another such person for MTH is Raymond Manley of Rays Electric Train works. Decent pricing, pride in work and professional. Had him convert 2 to 3 rail, repair ps2 and ps3 engines and convert ps1 protoclunk to ps2/3. Great results. My biggest blunder was cracking a Post war FM Train Master shell at screw hole. Impatience removing screw/shell resulted in crack of brittle plastic. Most annoying. Was repairable and mostly invisible. That engine was solid c8 before the blunder.

One day, me and my brother were running trains when suddenly the coupler from the caboose came undone. I tried to stop it but it was too late. The locomotive crashed into the car, made a spark, and made the TIU start smoking rendering it unusable. Thankfully, no damage was done to any of the engines but the TIU might be fried. My biggest regret of this was not hitting the emergency stop button when I saw that it was getting too close.

Great vidio, sorry about your luck... when i first built my Yard Layout the lionchief 0 8 0 s ran over any thing amiss on the track, got a 681 turbine at 13lbs and it did not like the track. Down she came and but a 3" divet in the ground lol , hay ma look no damage!!! Soft grass is better than concrete. I was shocked at the lack of damage.Thanks for the morning coffee...
