I think that you are on the right track in your proposed "bullet nose" shape modification to the center section of this hydroplane. It should 1) improve the aerodynamics of the boat, 2) will allow you to add some structural support to a stressed area, 3) will slightly lower the center of gravity of the hull, 4) allow you put some components (if any) lower in the boat and slightly forward of the boat ballance point , slightly lowering the overall center of gravity of the boat/system, 5) it should reduce the resistance/pounding of rough water on the bottom of the boat. . . . [I believe that you've already pointed many of those things out in your video]. As you have also noted - the shallow sponson depth combined with the deep belly pan could still cause problems. If it were me, I'd seriously consider losing the belly pan and raise the motor mount, and hope that the "turn fin/tether-ball effect" will allow you to keep your cornering speed up. [Yes - raising the motor mount/driveline would be a ton of work!]. Your method of building hydroplanes with G-10 sponson bottoms that can be popped off and modified (combined with the usual adjustable strut) should allow you to tweak the hull angle of attack and ride height to get it to handle the way you want.

That raised forward section on the underside of the hull is going to disturb the laminar airflow adhesion in that area considerably so you will get reduced lift..and thus increased water contact and drag slowing this boat down more..That hulls aerofoil contour is basically Clark Y with the almost flat bottom.
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros Жыл бұрын
Oh the flat bottom is rocketship fast, but gets angry when it beats against the surface. Today's motors and props are so fast that there really is no need for lift anymore. The fastest boats running here actually appear to have downforce, slapping back down onto the water after lifting up, and never slowing down. It's really something to see. A wiser guy would copy what those guys are doing, as it's pretty obvious when you look at them, but where's the thrill in mirroring someone else's work?

Good stuff Scotty!! I like to use the Klasskote epoxy paints as a base coat for durability and it sticks to anything. The automotive primers and colors don't really adhere to wood that well. Then I use the automotive paints and clear without flex additives over the white Klasskote base with excellent results.

Scott, your airfoil shape boat seems like it might work well. Charlies girl has a bit of a radius up front. I think the rc boats would need to be built exactly like the real ones IF they were moving at the scale speed.

Your write about the curve on the bottom of boat but the water makes drag. dimple little smaller than a dime, shallow. in rowes from the back of the backmoter plate to the back of the hull like a golf ball it will break the drag letting it slip through the water better that's how half ball gets it's distance right. it works really well
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros Жыл бұрын
Mmmmm, disagree. Yes on plane, but when the hull is in the water I don't think we want a bunch of dimples pushing the water around. Keep watching... I'm brainstorming a way to prove my theory to y'all!

You are creating a symetrical airfoil by having a curved forward botom section. Then if you change the angle of attack to positive, you will generate lift. If the AOA goes negative, you'll burry the nose. Look at the rear wings on the unlimiteds, if they go positive AOA, they generate lift which is supposed to drive the nose down kill the lift and settle the boat back to the water. Otherwise they are negative or neutral (always a talking point with Ron Jones Sr.) and don't have any effect on the boat ride. I worked on The Lancer J89 that was a Ron Jones Sr. boat and that was always a talking point.

Great to have you back man, and it's so good to see that Jackson is OK! I like your thinking on the gentle radius of the front section of the floor. Just a couple of thoughts: Perhaps a slight vee-shape, like on a regular boat, on the front of the floor up to where the engine sticks out, might help getting the hydro up on plane? The idea being, that a slight vee-shape upfront may help to alleviate the "suction" effect at lower speeds. A vee-shape will provide slightly more room for air to travel along the inside edges of the sponsons and "unstick" the floor. That's my line of thinking anyway. I don't really know if it will be an improvement, but seeing as you're willing to experiment on this boat... 😊 It's not unthinkable, that you may even have too much air rushing under the boat, resulting in more lift than you'd want, or need. In such a scenario, an adjustable wing (the one way upfront) might be handy. Maybe my comments don't make sense, but we're still friends, right? 😉
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros Жыл бұрын
Makes sense, and I've had the v-bottom idea in my head for a long time. Unfortunately I don't think it would be allowed since we're supposed to maintain the same basic configuration as the real boat under the rules. At one point in time we began building a full-size 2.5 hydro and it had a v-bottom, but like many such projects it was never completed

I get Finnish ply from Aircraft Spruce, using 1.5mm for framing and all bottom surfaces, and 1mm thickness for top decks (roughly 1/16" and 1/32"). I also keep domestic sizes on hand from Balsa USA, where I get 1/8" and 1/4" lite ply. Balsa USA is switching to a new website at this very moment so it's best to wait a day or two until they get it working correctly. www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/wppages/finnishbirch.php www.balsausa.com

Stunt planes like the SBach, Extra 300 etc. have fully symmetrical cambered airfoils. Flat bottom wings are more stable. This is why high wing Cessnas are better for training pilots. Hey wait a minute, my new Black Pearl P Sport has an airfoil symmetrical just like you are wanting...thats odd. This should make it more responsive. Less stable and on the edge if its anything like rc airplanes.

Why not flatten out the top side to kill the lift, then you wouldn't have to worry as much about making suction on the bottom? Also, as a quick test of the no lift theory, you could use some stall strips on the top surface to knock the lift way down as a test without having to cut the boat apart.
