This is Part 2 of this RC Space Shuttle Series. We're seeing if we can recreate the Space Shuttle Program with R/C planes and model rockets. After watching a Space Shuttle documentary, I thought it would make an interesting Project Air mini-series to build and launch a model space shuttle from beginning to end. This is part 2. Check out part 1 here.
To provide you with some more info, we're using Estes solid rocket motors to propel a foam board Space Shuttle attached to boosters into the atmosphere for it to detach and be piloted back down. This episode sees the shuttle drop tests from an R/C airplane, much like the Enterprise drop tests from a NASA Boeing 747.
Free plans for the Shuttle can be found here: drive.google.com/file/d/13drL...
Note! These are very vague and just what I used to make my own shuttle. I improvised some of the parts from foam board and you'll have to do the same.
Make sure to join the journey with Project Air

Such a greatly balanced design and the fact that it can fly even with such payload made me speachless. Kudos to the pilot and his skills! For the Estes motor launch, please consider using a single, appropriately sized rocket motor that is firmly mounted to the shuttle. Multiple motors rarely ignite simultaneously. Point the thrust directly through the properly positioned cg so you don't have a torque from the thrust. You will likely encounter stability challenges, resulting in a very uncontrolled ascent from a short burst of thrust.

I saw the enterprise on the back of the 747 when I was a little kid living near Denver Colorado. I assume they were moving it across country and stopped in Colorado to refuel? Anyway they did land and we got to see it from the fence as it took off. I remember it looked really cool with the fairing on the rear since Enterprise had no motors. Later when I built a model of it, I used the fairing instead of the motors that came with the kit...

It was actually an R/C pilot that proved that the shuttle could carry the shuttle. He was an engineer at JPL who flew model planes for a hobby, he tried telling NASA it could be done, but they refused to believe it was possible. So he built his own 747 and shuttle, using the same weight ratios for each, and flew it for them.
@5c0u53
@5c0u53 5 жыл бұрын
Couple of tips, use Bungee cord not elastic and you need to stretch the cord so that there is plenty of tension, not just 5 feet of weak pull as seen in the video. The shuttle is a turd even with a motor on the back and all Deltas are twitchy in either pitch or roll depending on the shape of the Delta. All aircraft with wings need a certain forward speed/amount of air travelling over the wing to stay in the air/be stable, your using a turd and low speed which is why it doesnt really do much other than nose in or at the end semi controlled glide straight down to earth. Bigger wing area is needed or much more speed. Have a look at the Parkzone F27-C which was a very popular RC model a few years ago ( before they made the ugly thing they do now with the same name ) Large wing area and amazingly capable from light weight to 200mph speed machine. Make your own scaled down version, it will fly fine with 1 vertical stab( mine still flew with 1 stab and half a wing ) , test its glide , add some foam to make it look like a shuttle. Be happy :D

Talking about bungees, how does one select the length of the bungee?
@5c0u53
@5c0u53 5 жыл бұрын
@@anirudhbhat7350 It depends on the size and weight of the plane. You want the bungee to provide enough inertia to overcome a tip stall , if you see in the video the amount used is not enough for the "shuttle" to do anything other than just fall back down to the ground, throwing the plane would have given better results just because the "bungee" used was completely ineffective. I use a Natural Latex Bungee tube which is 6mm diameter and i bought 20 meters from Aliexpress and have more than enough for 2, for a small plane you could use 10 meters and adjust it to get the best results ( better to have too much and cut it than too little and tie it) , it is the same latex used for catapults/slingshots so it is very resilient. The other side is to ensure that were you anchor the bungee in the ground is solid !!!!! you dont want to stretch the cord and then have the anchor come flying back at you because the ground is soft lol.

So I know this is a late comment, but I noticed something in the footage of the successful launch of the glider that I was curious about. There was a piece of debris that flew off during the launch, (around 10:24 in the video) and I noticed after the single engine landing that a panel on the bottom of that engine pod was missing. In flight it seemed that after the engine failed, there was a battery or something hanging out of the pod. Was that piece of debris during the launch of the glider that panel? It seemed like a likely cause for that failure and I am honestly quite curious.

It’s better to have a tail like a p-38 lightning because the space shuttle disrupts the air flow behind it and control on the vertical stabiliser is diminished and plus the shuttle can hit the tail , the antonov an-225 was designed to carry the Russian space shuttle the buran and it has a twin tail and the 747 shuttle carrier had extra vertical stabilisers on the horizontal stabilisers

(I'm no RC building expert since I'm still building my first original aircraft, but) wouldn't a little flat bottom or better yet (I think) a cambered wing help it glide better? Or can't you fit that type of wing design in there, since I see that the wing is completely flat (I think).
