It’s true, the HPI brand has gone through a tough couple of years, bouncing around between owners, but among the chaos, there’s one thing that holds true. The HPI vehicle line-up has a huge fan base. And although there are some RCer’s that spread doubt of the brand, the majority of the RC world, Greg included, want to see this brand back to its glory. It deserves it and the hard work put in by the new owner shows its a brand we should stand behind. With that said, we have one of their most well known vehicles in the workshop for review, the Savage X V2! This beast of a monster truck is loaded with features and it’s size along with its power system are sure to put a smile on any driver's face. We’ll get deep into this truck and take it out for a good thrashing and some speed testing. Is it time for you to get a Savage? Find out in this video!
Note: I forgot to mention in the video that the slipper needed to be tightened as well.

HPI has really fallen short here on an opportunity to reclaim this segment, so many of the savages quirks are basically all still here.and nice etched TVP's that you can't see, yet they didn't include them on the nitro models where u can see them? WTH HPI? You guys really dropped the ball here on this 'blow n go' re-release. Its really quite sad to me as I'm a huge HPI racing fan and had a love affair with the savage platform for over a decade, huge disappointment. At least factory parts support in canada will re-emerge for all my old savages for a little while at least.

I got the Savage X 4.1 right after it came out, and I loved it. Smacked a tree head on at full speed downhill and the car just ate that tree up! No damage except the exhaust pipe came loose in the silicone coupling. Later on I got the Flux conversion kit for it, dropped in a Mamba Monster in it and gave it the beans. Two months ago I got the Savage X Flux V2 6S and I love it still. It's just all around a great truck and good design. Sure, it's harder in some aspects to work on with the TVP design, but it's worth the "hassle" to have that (IMO) superior chassis design. I've done some gnarly things to my cars and not a thing have happened to it. I've wrenched on the old Savage 4.1 so much that basically ALL screews are loose due to the plastic they screw into have worn out. Just think about that. Basically ALL screws are LOOSE (finger tight at best with no threads left) and I thrash the car and nothing comes loose, flies off or gets damaged/bent. Say what you will about HPI, the support or the prices, but they created a BEAST of a truck. I don't condone fanboying. But for the Savage, I will make an exception.

Wow, thank you so much Greg, really appreciate that and it's a pleasure to help out a fellow RC nut whenever I can. And glad that tip paid off, too. 😁👍 Really like the detail you go into with your vids and nice to see we mentioned a lot of the same things that are good and bad (could be improved) on the truck. Nice one and thank you again for the mention. 🙂

Awesome, I truly miss HPI, The original Savage nitro back 20 years ago was the first hobby grade RC I got, and man was it a blast. Fingers crossed they're back for good now. But the price point on it makes me hesitant to pull the trigger, nostalgia aside, I can get more for less. Now, if I had some extra coin laying around, I'd buy in a heartbeat, but given this economy, it's tough for someone to drop $500 for a rig, much less $800. I think HPI should consider the market they're coming back in. All in all, it looks like a Savage, built like a Savage, and looks to drive like a Savage. It's on my Christmas list for sure..

I'm a bit biased, I have fond memories of sending my s-25 (1stgen savage) off the center of the massive 25' 180deg BMX berms all day long, this would be 2002. Only had to go home when I ran out of fuel which was usually a gallon. The nitro engine actually let go while airborne one time (rod pun sheared off ). That was the only time my day was cut short prematurely at the old BMX track do to a breakage. HPI warranted the engine and I was up and running in no time, just saying had a really good experience. Of all the folks I bashed with over the years the savage was consistently the last truck standing the majority of the time. I like the pan cars for racing, the lowered cg is huge! Try an xray it will blow your mind. The savage is a monster truck I like it for that. All the other MTs were fun but sorta like a glass doll in comparison, looks nice until you drop it. Lol any rc is a good rc at the end of the day as long as your having fun.

I was a huge Hpi fan in the past but they aren't consistent enough. They make kits then offer weak parts support and leave you high and dry....i had the hpi drift, mini,, flux and 1/5 baja.. they kill off the kits to fast..I sold them off..I like how traxxas, arrma, tamiya are relative for years..a weak attempt to come back to market and jump on the large scale truck scene with the rehash but it's so much outhere currently and the price on this is high IMO ima pass.

HPI savage was my absolute favorite- Conversation kit from nitro to flux was the best ever. Hope HPI makes it somehow. It would be enough for me if they only offered spare parts for their old models. By the way, no or heavy steering when stationary is typical Savage. You can do whatever you want, the servo saver catches any movement. I guess it's the axle geometry (Caster). But the drive train components are the strongest you can find in 1:8 scale: differentials with 29T/9T, Pins and outdrive of a diameter where Arrma and Traxxas can not keep up. Especially the hyped Arrma differentials look like toys. But overall price is to high, availability poor and the car body is a matter of taste.

Hoping you can help. I bought this exact RC truck early 2022 and out of the box it was amazing the first run inside of a few minutes. Then I noticed it slowed down drastically and I brought it in and smelled some bad burning smell. I haven't had a lot of time to deal with it or tinker on as I have had to move and bought a house so I packed it up after I had already cooresponded with customer service HobbyRec or something like that and they are in Utah. 10 months later and I have a little time and their customer service is pretty good and still honored the warranty return of the motor which was their initial best guest. Replaced the motor and truck is still slow - will max at approximately 10 mph. So I wrote them and now they sent me a new ESC (both motor and ESC exact same as stock set) So I thought for sure after getting a new ESC and a new motor this brand new never run (except for that initial run 10 months ago) would now be fixed. Nope it still only goes 10 mph. And I ran it for only a couple of min this time too. My battery set p is the recommended just as the stock ESC already has two deans that connect making the two 3S batteries the same as runnng one 6S with 5000 mAh. What else do you think the problem could be??? I will say if I put my nose up close the middle between the ESC and motor smells (somewhere where that black cover with 4 screws is that would be somewhat over the motor's pinion gear. Is that what is causing it not to pick up speed? Why is it overheated in that region and it has a burnt smell to it? Sorry I don't want to call that part anything here because I'm not sure what it's called. Thanks.

Love the new truck but not the body and definitely not the price. Hopefully chop shops get their hands on it and I'll just build my own

Nice review . This truck is probably around $800 after tax . I owned an SS way back in 2000 and I loved it but compared to a Max with the wide arm kit it leaves a lot be desired for. They need to drop their price on that truck. I know that is a scale difference but performance wise. I want to like this truck but that price tag OUCH COME ON HPI WHO YOU PLAYAN

Lol this drives much better than the Maxx and it's 6s with much larger wheels. No comparison really..

@DoRC
@DoRC 2 жыл бұрын
At $550 this would be an intriguing truck. At $770 it's ridiculously overpriced for what you get. No center differential, plastic shocks, forged ring and pinion instead of their machined ones, etc etc is kind of a slap in the face for being pretty much the most expensive one-eighth scale RTR monster truck you can buy. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it's a fine truck but you can get much more modern designs for much less these days.

But the thing is, the features you pointed out doesn’t matter to everyone. Everything you pointed out are valid observations, but in the end people buy what they’re interested in. For some the price doesn’t matter; fun, styling, previous experiences, intended use, etc play bigger roles in purchasing decisions. In RC, there’s something for everyone. 😄
@DoRC
@DoRC 2 жыл бұрын
@@rcdriver for sure there will be a small subset of people that will buy this based on nostalgia and another small subset that will buy it based on looks and nothing else but I feel like the majority of people in this hobby are going to be comparing this to other vehicles when they make a purchase decision and it's going to fall short. Trust me it hurts me to say this as I really like HPI but I just really feel like they missed the mark on the price on this one

I agree. Look at how Redcat priced the Kaiju EXT. Now that’s more appropriate especially with the same power system

Still has the inferior forged diffs instead of the machined diffs. Machined will always be stronger.

Great video, but I feel bad for HPI. Why can’t they do anything really new?
@rcdriver
@rcdriver 2 жыл бұрын
Because they don’t have to. Tamiya and Traxxas have old platforms that still sell really well today and they’re the biggest RC companies in the world. It’s smarter and more cost effective for companies to rework platforms. Full redesigns costs a whole lot more and for a company getting off the ground again, it’s good to see them do it the smart way by just tweaking their existing models.

@@cohensherrill3140 Happy to help! It’s always cool to see new stuff, but you (not you specifically) have to think about the other side. It’s expensive to manufacture a new car and I’d rather see them build their business up so it will be able to thrive and support consumers product & parts needs for years to come.

Brings back memories of working on my savage 21. Long ago. I hated working on it. Not user friendly at all. I wouldn’t buy one. Rc has come a long way since then. This is old technology.

I have my original savage ss. It is the equivalent of a Savage xl (super hd drivetrain) just without the xl plates. Has all the easy access and tougher plastic housings as well. I'm not sure what part you hate working on, it barely takes any time to get to anything.

Got mine delivered from Amazon 3rd party seller as none of my LHS carry HPI anymore and I’m in SoCal so it’s kind of bizarre. Anyway first run smelled burning 🔥 and sudden loss of power. Didn’t even run more than 5 min. Was running brand new LiPos 3S 11.1V 6200 mah, 100C (two to = 22.2V) Would you think it’s the motor or ESC or both that burned up? HRP doesn’t have any ESCs in stock (HRP handles all HPI warranty in the U.S.) I’ve had many mid-range to high-end ESC and motor combos since 2007 and nothing like this has ever happened before: Have you heard anyone else having this problem on this particular truck?

Some pretty dated tech for the price. Does it come with the pinion required to hit the speed they’re advertising? Seems like you get a lot more from the competition for less money.
